Thanks Bob!

I've been chewing regular gum and rocking werther's originals...sunflower seeds sounded like a good idea but they are more of an outdoor thing and it's January (weird how cold doesn't seem like a factor when you are going outside to smoke).

Failed last weekend. Snuck in a few on a wine tour. I don't even like wine. Zero since...

I'm in the same boat. Quit when my daughter was born 3 months ago, but now rip through a can of chew a day. That will be phased out eventually.

I've read the best way to legitimately have any shot of quitting (if you aren't a steel nerved cold turkey on a whim kind of guy) is to start exercising at least 90 days before your quit date, and don't drink for the first 6 months after quitting.

I was doing really well but just one rough week at work and I was smoking again. I used Chantix to quit before but not sure I can get the prescription again through the military doctor!

I'm typing this with a big chew in my lip, so take this as you will...

But the times I have quit and it worked, and the times I know where people have kicked it, there is one method that seems to always work. You nailed it above.

Exercise. Eat a healthy diet. Involve yourself in a large project (remodel a bathroom, rebuild a dirtbike, learn to paint, etc).

Telling someone that you want them to hold you responsible rarely works. It sounds good, but if you already knew them, they were already enabling you. At some point, you have to take the responsibility yourself. If you surround yourself with conducive activity and conducive environments, then the people you are around can be mitigated. After all, just because people may enable you, doesn't mean they don't care or want you to achieve your goal. But it's unfair to expect other people to participate in our life changes. Just my $.02.

Quit cold turkey while my wife was prego with my son. Last cig I had was the night of the NCG fiasco in January (7th?) of 2013 and haven't had one since. I often crave one, especially when drinking, but I find that the more time that passes, the easier it gets. Also helps to look at it as a series of small decisions (each time you decide to pass on a cig) rather than one giant life-altering decision (quitting all-together). Best of luck- stick with it.

I developed a smoke allergy a few years back, so even if I wanted to go back, I couldn't...

Seems like a few of us are in the same boat. I quit a little over 4 months ago when my son was born. I find it's the hardest when I have a beer or two, so now I hardly drink which sucks too!

Keep it up, guys!

Going on 3.5 years. It's a daily process. Don't give in to those cravings. I used to write a big NO on my packs if I had them. Every time I went to grab one I had to read that and it at least gave my mind a jolt if I was getting antsy. Anyway the only way to quit is to stop. You will never not be a smoker, just a former smoker.

Good luck.

Keep strong guys. The urge may never fully leave but try to remind yourselves of two things: there are more important things in life and you are too intelligent to smoke. Smart people don't smoke cigarettes.

I go through a can of chew a day...doesn't help having an hour commute to and from work. Would like to kick but don't see it happening anytime soon.

Well this is about the most depressing thing I've read in a while. 3.5 years sober and you're in the struggle? The longest I lasted without a dip was a couple of months, but I work in customer services so something always drives me crazy enough to pick up a can. If I have the rest of my life to deal with this shit I might as well give up trying to quit and be happy. :)

When I was 15 or 16, I bought a pack of Marlboro's. I lit the first one, too a couple of puffs then proceeded to cough and hack. Threw them away right then and there. I think it helped that none of my friends smoked.

Time to quit guys.

When I was about 18 months I picked up a barely lit cigarette butt out of an ashtray. Took a mini puff. I can remember parents having me drink cold water saying it'll ease the burn and cough. Fuck that. Always been a non-smoker.
