If Rudolph gets poached, I call up Harry and beg him to come back. If not Harry, I say ring up Ed Warriner again. He ran the OL for OSU after he left here and helped win that 2014 championship with the Buckeyes, but they cut him loose when he turned out to be a shitty OC. He's bounced around at Michigan, Minnesota, and now he's at FAU doing OL still. I personally think he helped turn things around in BK's early years on the OL before Harry took over. He was certainly an improvement over what Weis trotted out.

I’m sorry but lol at Hiestand coming back for 3.0. Would he even make it another 365 days?

I’m sorry but no on Harry. He’s a great coach and loved having him on our team, but…. I don’t think his running scheme was that good. I feel that Rudolph at the helm our line has taken a step forward. So give me someone else if Rudolph leaves.

I'd take Harry in an analyst role in a heartbeat though. I'm not sure what they are or aren't allowed to do with regards to film room and practice but having him as presence alone would be great in my book

I would have to do some looking around to see if there were any ties but I think he stays. From what we read Freeman is better to deal with than Day.

I could see the NFL but why does anyone think Rudolph would leave for another college job? Ohio State has us that rattled?

We have lost others to lateral jobs in the past.
Who was the last assistant we lost to a lateral move, who we actually wanted to keep? Tony Alford?

If there's a personal, personnel or coaching relationship reason for Rudolph to go, that'd be one thing. But he's got Joe Moore Award-level talent at Notre Dame for the next couple of years and no apparent connection to Day, his staff or Ohio State. Unless he's got beef with Freeman or Denbrock, the only reason to leave would be money and I think (hope) the days of being outbid for our own talent are in the past.

Off the top of my head, we’ve lost Kelly, Rees, Alford, Wariner to laterals. Lost Bowden last week.

We definitely upgraded in a few of those and I’m not really worried if Rudolph leaves, but if he does it wouldn’t be the first time it’s happened.

Harry still lives about 15-20 minutes away in Niles last I knew. An analyst role would make sense in a hypothetical world.

Which program doesn't have this problem? Bama under Saban?

Is there any credible indication Rudolph is looking at OSU? Or is that just speculation?

Beats me, I don’t follow any other programs that closely. Somebody asked why he would leave for another college job and I just commented that it sometimes happens.

Fair point on Rees. I guess I wasn’t really counting Kelly (as an assistant). Alford and Warriner were a decade ago. If Ohio State wants to throw stupid money at Rudolph the way USC did at Bowden, ok.

I just think we’re talking ourselves into a bit of a state over something that’s unlikely to happen. Notre Dame is a very attractive place to be a college OL coach. And especially right now. Why be scared about Ohio State?

Agree. In the other instances we lost people, we ended up upgrading. If he wants to go I think we'd be in a great position to bring in someone very good.

I'm all for other suggestions if you guys have them. This is just a hypothetical if Rudolph were to get taken.

Plus...our boys weren't as soft under Harry, far les injuries...

I like Rudolph, I don't want to see him go. That said, I'm a bit sad Harry wasn't retained to begin with, I still think he's one of the best. I think his pass blocking is definitely better than the run game side, but he's got a good history obviously, he knows ND, the players liked him. He was a decent recruiter.

I'm guessing Harry would be a no go though. That's why I would look at bringing Warriner back. When OSU took him away he led the ground attack with Ezekiel Elliot and took them to a championship. He had some great Trap plays and downhill blocking. He's just sitting at FAU right now doing very little.

Warriner and Heistand are both in their 60s. Go younger. If for some reason Rudolph were to leave I’d look at the OL coaches for Ga Tech, Boise, Army, Arizona State.

(Army had two OL coaches this year! One just got the head coach job at Central Michigan. The other played for Army, has been on staff there for a decade, and in between got a Bronze Star in Afghanistan. Might be a tough pull, but worth a call!)

Arizona State’s guy came from Army. Maybe him.

I think an ongoing thread of coaching carousel candidates sounds like a good idea at some point.

Harry Hiestand retired two years ago. Let's move on. My top three just off off of the top of my head are Brian Callahan Minnesota, Adam Cushing TAMU and Bart Miller Illinois.

Boise State's guy Tim Keane just got elevated to Run Game Coordinator a few weeks ago. I do think he'd be worth a call and should be on short lists.

Still intrigued by George Barnett from Iowa as well. First choice would probably have to be Cushing. He's coached at Northwestern and Duke. He's going to know how to recruit the book reader types.

As I'm sure you've all seen by now, this is OSU's target list for their new OL Coach (which of course includes Rudolph)
