Is Kelly a REALLY good coach?

This thread is funny. I can be a BK critic, but damn he's a good coach. His track record at ND and everywhere else he's gone attests to that fact. The real rub lies in whether or not he is "elite" or a "great" coach.

I think that has been answered already, circa 2012.

He is a good coach, not great, and certainly not elite. If he were elite, there would be no need for this thread.

I'd like to state that I never said Kelly sucks as a coach, but that he's been wildly inconsistent...strike that, he's been consistent in how average our record has been through the season, and some of the losses fall directly on his baffling play calling. Not all, but some.

A lot of his problems however, can be attributed to just rotten luck. That being said, how long does bad luck continue to be the excuse? Again, not saying he's bad, nor that this season is destined to go into free-fall mode like last year.

This can't be taken at face value either. This was during, like I said, one of the darkest moments of our recent history. Circus acts against Arizona State, a horrible loss to a bad Northwestern team, special teams gone missing against Louisville, all accumulated with the sh*tfest in Los Angeles. I'm pretty sure every single ND fan questioned Kelly's ability even a little after that streak, and if you didn't, you're lying. That could've been Urban Meyer, and fans would be questioning him. It's natural, as that's the kind of world College Football is. It's a "what have you done for me recently?" type of game. Why am I suddenly not allowed to form an opinion that critiques Kelly's abilities, even when I stated he's learned from his mistakes?

I know, it wasn't a great critique by any means, but I was far from the only person to question Kelly's coaching during that time, or hell, at ANY point during his tenure.

Who said you can't critique him? It wasn't the over-the-top (and wrong) critique that i was talking about. It was the several pages of arguing that you went through arguing that he wasn't a very good coach, and then just ONE game later, you're suddenly arguing that BK is almost on par (if not on par) with Urban Meyer. How does that even work? You simply don't go from being mediocre to being elite with just one game and a few tweaks. It doesn't work that way.

Truth is, he was never as mediocre and as "horrible" of an in-game coach as you claimed he was, and he hasn't proven to be on Meyer's level yet either. But he definitely is a lot better than you were giving him credit for, that is for sure.

Yeah....I don't like it either. I think he's a very good coach and that we are fortunate to have him. seeing it bumped frequently during a 6-1 run seems odd.

Hey don't look at me. I didn't resurrect this thread.

A better coach wouldn't be trailing so often in the 4Q, imo.

i think he is a great second half coach but the game plan usually has me scratching my head...ESPECIALLY the scripted 1st series

Ever think that the script always calls for, "After a completely ham-fisted first few series...."

99.9% sure you're being sarcastic. If not, ignore the following:

1) For someone who has been doing a lot of complaining about people complaining, not sure why you bump a thread like this for a

2) Quote that has absolutely no context. Are we talking about the last five years? Are we talking about head coaches at their current schools? What are we talking about?

3) Depending on what we are even talking about context-wise, cumulative stats mean very little. What percentage of games do we win after trailing in the fourth quarter? How does that percentage stack up against other teams percentages? That would be valuable information. This tells me nothing.

The stat refers to when he arrived, so most since 2010. Can spin it that we shouldn't be trailing that often; or that ND is always fighting even when they're down, especially in the 4th quarter. Something this program hasn't been able to do in quite a while.

It's simple. On this board, it will be spun as a negative while many of those same people would be all over Saban and Meyer's jock for doing the same if it were either of them.

Let's say the average FBS team makes a 4th quarter comeback 25% of the time. If a coach's rate is 10%, but has been in so many 4th quarter deficits that the coach has the most total comebacks, that's not a commendable stat.

BK may very well have an excellent rate of comebacks. If so, he deserves praise for it. But having the "most" of something like this doesn't tell me much.

It's a double edged sword. I'd rather not have a high number of 4th quarter come back over a specific period because that means we needed to come back. On the other side, that mean we won, and had the stones to fight back or the W.

Why are we arguing about whether Kelly is a good coach when we are ranked 5th in the nation and set up pretty well to get into the playoffs? smh

I saw a statistic on Twitter that casts Kelly in a favorable light. So I decided to share it in the thread where his quality as a coach was most recently being discussed.

I'm mostly just messing with you man. Everyone is complaining about complaining and then I see a bump like this and it just seems like an invitation for me to complain more.

I can't wait for us to win the Natty so I can just admit to being wrong and we can all be friends again.

Because... people on here argued over hot topics like whether to kick or receive if you win the coin toss. And you think the HC thing isn't going to come up from time to time?
