But they may also be healthier and have more healthy life choices as well as not engaging in risky behaviors, e.g. illegal drugs, etc., and less preventable chronic diseases even comparing same age groups

This is my contention why America will always lead all countries is healthcare spending per capita. Whether we go to a “Medicare For All” or straight free market ala auto/home/life insurance, neither will fix what’s wrong w/ US healthcare b/c too many Americans insist on shoveling crap down their gullet at astronomical proportions & w/ very few nutrients.

So both sides need to stop comparing the US healthcare to the UK or Australia or Canada or Germany or Sweden or Switzerland or Japan, etc because our glutonous ways will never make that an apples-to-apples comparison. And giving free stuff or throwing more debt at the problem is about as dumb as adhering to the Type-II Diabetes inducing diets that Americans insist on.

Portland, Multnomah Co. grant $1M for attorney fees in immigration cases (Fox News)

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) – This week Portland City Council approved a $500,000 dollar grant to Catholic Charities of Oregon and Multnomah County is matching that amount.

It’s funding that will go toward paying for attorneys and legal services for potential deportees.

Margaux Weeke, a communications specialist in the Office of Commissioner Chloe Eudaly told FOX 12 Friday the funding which is being called the “Universal Representation Project” will be for immigrants who may not be able to afford an attorney during legal proceedings.

It’s services that Jordan Cunnings, a staff attorney at Innovation Law Lab, said are crucial in winning cases.

“For many people it's sort of the most frightening most monumental experience they're going to have in their life and there's just an incredibly limited number of resources for folks who can't afford attorneys,” Cunnings said.

Innovation Law Lab is an immigrant-rights organization in Portland.

Cunnings said the organization will have a direct hand in the implementation of the program.

“Innovation Law Lab in collaboration with a group of legal service providers and community organizations has been brainstorming and dreaming about universal rep for over a year and meeting to sort of plan and making the funding ask and we're going to be serving as sort of the strategy point and the hub for coordination of the program,” she said.

“We're going to be the tactical center for the direct service attorneys so we're going to be representing people in removal proceedings in the Portland immigration court and providing case support and strategy with a goal of winning every case.”

Cunnings said about half of the thousands of Oregonians who are in removal proceedings in court currently have no representation.

“Immigration court is one of the only court proceedings where the government always has a lawyer at their table and the respondent often doesn't have a lawyer at the table,” Cunnings said. “The stakes are also incredibly high so you're basically stacking the deck against people by having them in what's often a life or death situation for them in the case that they're fighting.”

But with that funding Cunnings told FOX 12 immigrants will have a voice and a chance to stay in the U.S.

“Whether or not you have a lawyer in immigration court is ultimately the most determinant factor in whether or not you win your case,” Cunnings said. “It's a very emotional experience and we're just really thrilled to now have the opportunity to sort of step in and support people who are at risk of removal here in Oregon.”

The city said this a pilot program and after a year the council will evaluate its success.

The $500,000 dollars from the city is general fund dollars and every tax payer FOX 12 polled Friday night said they’re in favor of the program.

Interesting study. Twice as many undocumented immigrants would double these economic statistics.

Overall, immigrants or those born in another country based on the 11 million figure comprise one out of five residents (total 44.7 million). Of these,
- Naturalized - 19.8 million (44% of all foreign born residents)
- Lawful - 11.9 million (26.6%)
- Temporary authorized 2.1 million (4.8%)
- Unlawful 11.0 million (24.56%)

Double that "unlawful" total to 22 million undocumented would increase foreign born residents to 55.7 million or 1 out of 4 residents.

Based on the 11 million figure, undocumented immigrants comprise five percent of all workers in the U.S. According to the IRS, based on the $11 million figure, undocumented immigrants contribute $9 billion in withheld payroll taxes. So, statistically doubling that would increase that to $18 billion.

Of those unauthorized immigrants, thirty-one per cent are home owners. Thirty-six percent have incomes at or greater than 200 per cent of poverty (15% are between 150-199% of poverty level). So, fifty-one per cent have incomes of 150% or more of poverty level.

Of undocumented immigrants based on the eleven million figure, sixty-four percent (or 7 million) are employed, seven percent are unemployed and twenty-nine percent are not in the labor force. Doubling that 7 million would mean that we really have 14 million undocumented residents in our workforce.

Overall, immigrants or foreign born workers are younger than U.S. born citizens. I previously posted the stats on immigrants using less in healthcare than they put in, with one of the contributing factors being age, which may comprise much of the figure called "not in labor force".

PM me if you want the sources one of which is Pew. How they calculated their total of eleven mill,
Where does the information on the total number of immigrants living in the country come from?

The estimates of the total number of immigrants in the U.S. come from two Census Bureau surveys: the Current Population Survey, or CPS, and the American Community Survey, or ACS. Both ask people where they were born, whether they’re citizens and so forth – but not whether they’re here legally. From those surveys, we get a number for what’s called the “foreign-born” population. Previous estimates we published used the CPS for most years, but now we’re using the ACS data for 2005 and later years and the CPS data for before 2005.

Migrant families overwhelm detention capacity in Arizona, prompting mass releases (Oct 9, 2018)

A sudden influx of Guatemalan families into Arizona has overwhelmed detention facilities there and forced the government to release hundreds of parents and children over the past several days, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Tuesday.

Yasmeen Pitts O’Keefe, a spokeswoman for ICE, said the agency can no longer conduct basic reviews of migrants’ case files and travel plans without running the risk of exceeding court-imposed limits on how long children can be held in immigration jails.

As a result, ICE has been dropping off busloads of families at church shelters and charities, some with ankle monitoring bracelets, others with little more than notices to appear in court.

“In light of the incredibly high volume of [families] presenting themselves along the Arizona border, ICE no longer has the capacity to conduct [case] reviews” without the risk of violating child-detention rules, O’Keefe said in a statement. “To mitigate that risk, ICE began to curtail such reviews in Arizona beginning Sunday October 7.”

[Trump’s family separation policy flawed from the start, watchdog says]

The U.S. Border Patrol has arrested soaring numbers of Central American families in the three months since President Trump halted the practice of separating migrant parents and children who enter the United States illegally. Large groups of 100 or more have been turning themselves in to agents and requesting humanitarian refuge.

“We are seeing record numbers of family units coming across,” said one Department of Homeland Security official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the trend. The department has not published border arrest totals for September, but the number of parents who arrived with children is expected to significantly exceed the 12,774 family members apprehended in August on the southern border.

Most Central American families have been crossing into the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, but in recent weeks border agents have seen a surge in the deserts of southern Arizona, where the government has even less ability to hold families in child-appropriate conditions. The vast majority are processed and let go.

“They’ve run out of ankle bracelets for them,” said Teresa Cavendish, director of Casa Alitas, which is housing 200 migrants at a church gymnasium in Tucson, where they sleep on cots provided by the Red Cross.

“This is the largest mass release of people I’ve experienced,” said Cavendish, adding that shelter capacity has also been strained because tickets on long-distance buses are sold out, leaving families stuck in Arizona.

Many are Guatemalans trying to reunite with family members living in Florida and along the Gulf Coast, but the approaching Hurricane Michael has further restricted bus service to those areas, said Cavendish, who has been trying to clear space by transferring families to shelters in other states.

[Hunger, not violence, fuels Guatemalan migration surge, U.S. says]

In her statement, O’Keefe, the ICE spokeswoman, blamed the dysfunction on lawmakers and court rulings that prevent the government from keeping children in immigration jails beyond a 20-day limit.

“After decades of inaction by Congress, the government remains severely constrained in its ability to detain and promptly remove families that have no legal basis to remain in the United States,” O’Keefe’s statement read.

“As a result, family units continue to cross the border at high volumes . . . as they face no consequence for their actions,” she said.

Since the beginning of October, at least 395 family members have been taken into custody in Arizona’s Tucson sector, according to the latest Border Patrol statistics, exceeding the number that agents typically register during an entire month.

U.S. agents have observed buses dropping off migrant families south of the border to walk through the desert and turn themselves in, said a senior Border Patrol official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss unpublished numbers.

The senior official estimated that Guatemalan families and children have accounted for 90 percent of those crossing into Arizona in recent weeks.

“It’s a very well-orchestrated smuggling venture,” the senior official said, “and it’s overwhelming the resources we have in those areas to process, house and transport them.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is scheduled to testify Wednesday before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, where she is likely to face questions about the surge of families crossing the border and the Trump administration’s plans for coping with it.

If these guys are swarming borders...honestly....at this point I'd be okay with militarizing it and shooting on sight.

I hold literally zero animus towards latin folks, they are decent Catholic people. But when you ignore our rules and think you are exempt...well, NATO 5.56 hollow points will teach ya a big league lesson. It really isn't even difficult...

It's a shame Buster isn't here anymore. I'd love to hear how we don't have an immigration problem in this country.

Very Trumpian solution, Dakota and icky.

While some bleeding hearts will certainly compare shooting the women and children refugees with NATO 5.56 hollow points as a "big league lesson", do not be deterred from any comparison to the hundreds of female homicides in Ciudad Juarez by gangs. If the U.S. Army balks, you can surely find volunteers in true patriots like yourselves in Trumpworld.

Yet you have more efficient and productive ways to resolve this problem. We are not talking about gas chambers, the thousands of black women sterilized in North Carolina, or Native American children taken from their parents to missionary schools. Even a first Trumpian solution of separating children was unproductive I am sure you agree since they could have been placed and grown up in good Christian homes where they speak only English, possess the correct cultural values and will raise them to serve our menial needs requires some expenditures that might tax the economy in the short term.

The women can serve the pleasures of Americans until no longer needed. You can find wisdom and a satisfying solution for the unproductive children in Jonathan Swift's essay in 1729 below (linked for your complete read on his ideas)

A Modest Proposal
For Preventing the Children of Poor People
in Ireland, from Being a Burden on Their Parents
or Country, and for Making Them
Beneficial to the Publick

[1] It is a melancholly Object to those, who walk through this great Town, 1 or travel in the Country, when they see the Streets, the Roads, and Cabbin-Doors, crowded with Beggars of the female Sex, followed by three, four, or six Children, all in Rags, and importuning every Passenger for an Alms. These Mothers instead of being able to work for their honest livelyhood, are forced to employ all their time in Stroling, to beg Sustenance for their helpless Infants, who, as they grow up either turn Thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native Country to fight for the Pretender in Spain, 2 or sell themselves to the Barbadoes. 3

[2] I think it is agreed by all Parties, that this prodigious number of Children, in the Arms, or on the Backs, or at the heels of their Mothers, and frequently of their Fathers, is in the present deplorable state of the Kingdom, a very great additional grievance; and therefore whoever could find out a fair, cheap and easy method of making these Children sound and useful Members of the common-wealth would deserve so well of the publick, as to have his Statue set up for a preserver of the Nation.

[3] But my Intention is very far from being confined to provide only for the Children of professed beggars, it is of a much greater extent, and shall take in the whole number of Infants at a certain Age, who are born of Parents in effect as little able to support them, as those who demand our Charity in the Streets.

[4] As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many Years, upon this important Subject, and maturely weighed the several Schemes of other Projectors, 4 I have always found them grossly mistaken in their computation. It is true a Child, just dropt from it's Dam, 5 may be supported by her Milk, for a Solar year with little other Nourishment, at most not above the Value of two Shillings, which the Mother may certainly get, or the Value in Scraps, by her lawful Occupation of begging, and it is exactly at one year Old that I propose to provide for them, in such a manner, as, instead of being a Charge upon their Parents, or the Parish, 6 or wanting 7 Food and Raiment for the rest of their Lives, they shall, on the Contrary, contribute to the Feeding and partly to the Cloathing of many Thousands.

[5] There is likewise another great Advantage in my Scheme, that it will prevent those voluntary Abortions, and that horrid practice of Women murdering their Bastard Children, alas! too frequent among us, Sacrificing the poor innocent Babes, I doubt, 8 more to avoid the Expence, than the Shame, which would move Tears and Pity in the most Savage and inhuman breast.

[6] The number of Souls in this Kingdom being usually reckoned one Million and a half, Of these I calculate there may be about two hundred thousand Couple whose Wives are breeders, from which number I Substract thirty Thousand Couples, who are able to maintain their own Children, although I apprehend 9 there cannot be so many, under the present distresses of the Kingdom, but this being granted, there will remain an hundred and seventy thousand Breeders. I again Subtract fifty Thousand for those Women who miscarry, or whose Children dye by accident, or disease within the Year. There only remain an hundred and twenty thousand Children of poor Parents annually born: The question therefore is, How this number shall be reared, and provided for, which, as I have already said, under the present Situation of Affairs, is utterly impossible by all the methods hitherto proposed, for we can neither employ them in Handicraft, or Agriculture; we neither build Houses, (I mean in the Country) nor cultivate Land: 10 they can very seldom pick up a Livelyhood by Stealing until they arrive at six years Old, except where they are of towardly parts, 11 although, I confess they learn the Rudiments much earlier; during which time they can however be properly looked upon only as Probationers, as I have been informed by a principal Gentleman in the County of Cavan, who protested to me, that he never knew above one or two Instances under the Age of six, even in a part of the Kingdom so renowned for the quickest proficiency in that Art.

[7] I am assured by our Merchants, that a Boy or Girl, before twelve years Old, is no saleable Commodity, and even when they come to this Age, they will not yield above three Pounds, or three Pounds and half a Crown at most on the Exchange, which cannot turn to Account either to the Parents or the Kingdom, the Charge of Nutriments and Rags having been at least four times that Value.

[8] I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I hope will not be lyable to the least Objection.

[9] I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance in London, that a young healthy Child well Nursed is at a year Old, a most delicious, nourishing, and wholesome Food, whether Stewed, Roasted, Baked, or Boyled, and I make no doubt that it will equally serve in a Fricasie, or Ragoust. 12

[10] I do therefore humbly offer it to publick consideration, that of the hundred and twenty thousand Children, already computed, twenty thousand may be reserved for Breed, whereof only one fourth part to be Males, which is more than we allow to Sheep, black Cattle, or Swine, and my reason is, that these Children are seldom the Fruits of Marriage, a Circumstance not much regarded by our Savages, therefore, one Male will be sufficient to serve four Females. That the remaining hundred thousand may at a year Old be offered in Sale to the persons of Quality, 13 and Fortune, through the Kingdom, always advising the Mother to let them Suck plentifully in the last Month, so as to render them Plump, and Fat for a good Table. A Child will make two Dishes at an Entertainment for Friends, and when the Family dines alone, the fore or hind Quarter will make a reasonable Dish, and seasoned with a little Pepper or Salt will be very good Boiled on the fourth Day, especially in Winter.

[11] I have reckoned upon a Medium, that a Child just born will weigh 12 pounds, and in a solar Year if tollerably nursed encreaseth to 28 Pounds.

[12] I grant this food will be somewhat dear, 14 and therefore very proper for Landlords, 15 who, as they have already devoured most of the Parents, seem to have the best Title to the Children.

[13] Infant's flesh will be in Season throughout the Year, but more plentiful in March, and a little before and after; for we are told by a grave Author 16 an eminent French physitian, that Fish being a prolifick Dyet, there are more Children born in Roman Catholick Countries about nine Months after Lent, than at any other Season, therefore reckoning a Year after Lent, the Markets will be more glutted than usual, because the Number of Popish Infants, is at least three to one in this Kingdom, and therefore it will have one other Collateral advantage by lessening the Number of Papists among us.

[14] I have already computed the Charge of nursing a Beggars Child (in which list I reckon all Cottagers, Labourers, and four fifths of the Farmers) to be about two Shillings per Annum, Rags included; and I believe no Gentleman would repine to give Ten Shillings for the Carcass of a good fat Child, which, as I have said will make four Dishes of excellent Nutritive Meat, when he hath only some particular friend, or his own Family to Dine with him. Thus the Squire will learn to be a good Landlord, and grow popular among his Tenants, the Mother will have Eight Shillings neat profit, and be fit for Work till she produceth another Child.

[15] Those who are more thrifty (as I must confess the Times require) may flay the Carcass; the Skin of which, Artificially 17 dressed, will make admirable Gloves for Ladies, and Summer Boots for fine Gentlemen.

[16] As to our City of Dublin, Shambles 18 may be appointed for this purpose, in the most convenient parts of it, and Butchers we may be assured will not be wanting, although I rather recommend buying the Children alive, and dressing them hot from the Knife, as we do roasting Pigs.

[17] A very worthy Person, a true Lover of his Country, and whose Virtues I highly esteem, was lately pleased, in discoursing on this matter, to offer a refinement upon my Scheme. He said, that many Gentlemen of this Kingdom, having of late destroyed their Deer, he conceived that the want of Venison might be well supplyed by the Bodies of young Lads and Maidens, not exceeding fourteen Years of Age, nor under twelve; so great a Number of both Sexes in every County being now ready to Starve, for want of Work and Service: And these to be disposed of by their Parents if alive, or otherwise by their nearest Relations. But with due deference to so excellent a friend, and so deserving a Patriot, I cannot be altogether in his Sentiments, for as to the Males, my American acquaintance assured me from frequent Experience, that their flesh was generally Tough and Lean, like that of our School-boys, by continual exercise, and their Taste disagreeable, and to Fatten them would not answer the Charge. Then as to the Females, it would, I think, with humble Submission, be a loss to the Publick, because they soon would become Breeders themselves: And besides it is not improbable that some scrupulous People might be apt to Censure such a Practice, (although indeed very unjustly) as a little bordering upon Cruelty, which, I confess, hath always been with me the strongest objection against any Project, how well soever intended....

We anticipate your further ideas and suggestions.

Swift ends:
[32] After all I am not so violently bent upon my own Opinion, as to reject any Offer, proposed by wise Men, which shall be found equally Innocent, Cheap, Easy and Effectual. But before something of that kind shall be advanced in Contradiction to my Scheme, and offering a better, I desire the Author, or Authors will be pleased maturely to consider two points. First, As things now stand, how they will be able to find Food and Raiment for a hundred thousand useless Mouths and Backs. And Secondly, there being a round Million of Creatures in humane Figure, throughout this Kingdom, whose whole Subsistence put into a common Stock, would leave them in Debt two Millions of Pounds Sterling adding those, who are Beggars by Profession, to the Bulk of Farmers, Cottagers and Labourers with their Wives and Children, who are Beggars in Effect; I desire those Politicians, who dislike my Overture, and may perhaps be so bold to attempt an Answer, that they will first ask the Parents of these Mortals, whether they would not at this Day think it a great Happiness to have been sold for Food at a year Old, in the manner I prescribe, and thereby have avoided such a perpetual Scene of Misfortunes, as they have since gone through, by the oppression of Landlords, the Impossibility of paying Rent without Money or Trade, the want of common Sustenance, with neither House nor Cloaths to cover them from Inclemencies of Weather, and the most inevitable Prospect of intailing the like, or greater Miseries upon their Breed for ever.

[33] I Profess in the sincerity of my Heart that I have not the least personal Interest in endeavouring to promote this necessary Work having no other Motive than the publick Good of my Country, by advancing our Trade, providing for Infants, relieving the Poor, and giving some Pleasure to the Rich. I have no Children, by which I can propose to get a single Penny; the youngest being nine Years old, and my Wife past Child-bearing.

It ties in nicely with the Democratic strategy in Texas. If they can just somehow get across the border before the election.

Not exactly shocking. The Dem candidate for governor in GA said last week that the blue wave included documented and undocumented aliens. She's not the first on the left to say that even illegals should be allowed to vote (and not so subtly suggest that they should make every attempt to).

Citizenship and voting laws be damned, if you'll vote for us it's all good, apparently.

She's definitely got the GA voters more willing to venture out to vote midterm... it's all over the TV here.

Look at these "poor refugees":

One would be forgiven for mistaking them for invaders.

Why carry the flag of the country you are leaving.... They'd get better press if they were carrying a bunch of US flags. Surprised Soros didn't send them a bunch.

They should play the Immigrant Song at that Mexican bridge and then tell them that Robert Plants first note is him having the piano board being slammed down on his fingers.

Does this make sense? Probably not.
Am I somewhat intoxicated right now? Definitely.

Militarize the border. Really no other option at this point. Not really a controversial take.

That's what I was thinking. I think it works more for the GOP though.

I think the dems will have more shit/tricks to drop closer mid terms.

Just like Pocahontas (sometimes referred to as "Elizabeth Warren") and her DNA test that will backfire. No one, except true believers, is going to be sympathetic to an invading horde carrying flags of foreign nations.

Excellent point.

My country is a shithole and I'm still proud of it. When do we march north?
