Sickening that anyone could support an open border policy or be against securing our borders.

Not sure if it's TDS or pure stupidity.

So absolutely a top 5 story of the day.....

CNN gives it a little line of text. All the big headlines, all anti-Trump.
At least they gave it text. MSNBC doesn't even mention it on their front page at all.

But hey, trust thy media....

Mollie Tibbetts murder suspect ID'd as Cristhian Rivera, 24, living in US illegally | Fox News

The body of Mollie Tibbets, the missing Iowa student, was found earlier today. A man from Mexico, living in the US illegally, confessed to abducting and killing her, and led police to where he'd dumped her body.

At least he finally came forward. His story is bullshit, bro claims be blacked out and doesn't know what happened....but now the family can move forward. Some dumb broad on TV(cnn or nbc) was trashing Fox for "talking about some girl in Iowa right now." That isn't going to sit well with people.

If the Tibbetts case had gotten little to no coverage from CNN, MSNBC, etc. before, not giving it much coverage yesterday would've been understandable. But they HAD been covering it heavily until an illegal alien confessed, THEN they went, "Oh, uh, shhhhh. Nothing to see here."

BTW, stay safe and keep us posted.

First and foremost, stay safe SoO. Get a few good bottles and hunker down.

I agree not THE top story but it was top 5 front pager.

And agree the lack of Lane coverage is total crap. Across the board I saw zero from all political spectrums. Fox did report that a HGTV star missed her flight back to the states do to Lane. Now that is WEAK!

Thanks, Dudes!

I'm cautiously optimistic that we're going to avoid the worst. Rain will be the biggest problem, Big Island has already received something like 20 inches of rain over the last 24 hours. Crazy.

I have my cigars and whisky... my wine fridge is full... I'm set. I regret that I finished off my Talisker Storm, a couple of months ago. That would seem so appropriate, right now.

Had a crazy past couple days but have been checking in on the Weather Channel. Some pics of sunny beaches, some of raging water in the mountains, and some crazy surfers taking advantage of the waves. How's it from your perspective? What's the outlook for your area?

Prayers for you and all the islanders.

I usually brush off these hurricane warnings because the projected tracks are always North of us. These last two were coming in from the South; that pathway is how we usually get hit. I was genuinely concerned, 1.5 days ago.

I'm a little relieved. If nothing goes screwy, I think we'll be okay. I don't want to jinx it, yet, but signs are pointing towards Hawaii avoiding major disaster.

I've done disaster-response stuff for the last ten years; if you're in healthcare you kind of are forced to. The analyses that I've seen on a CAT 4 or CAT 5 hurricane hitting us dead-on are not pretty. It's like Puerto Rico level destruction.

Oahu hasn't seen any major changes. We'll probably see the worst parts, tomorrow night. Parts of the Big Island are flooding. Maui is starting to get hit. Kauai may actually luck out, and not see anything but heavy showers.

South Korea is Going Crazy over a Handful of Refugees

Worth a read on how refugees/immigration is viewed elsewhere developed world. It never strikes me as weird that there is an expectation (and always has been) that the United States and Europe take in as many asylum seekers and refugees as possible, but Japan and Korea take in effectively zero people.

It's not politically correct to talk about racism in Asian communities and countries, but that's exactly what all of this is rooted in.

Want to see the lack of diversity in other countries? Look no further than the Olympics. Compare all the diverse ethnicities on the US team vs the Chinese National Team. Yes...I stole this from Daniel Tosh.

SoO - be safe and good luck riding out the storm.

My niece, soph at Iowa, knew Tibbet. I grew up in a smaller town than Brooklyn in Iowa (300 vs 1500). This crap happening in San Fran (anywhere in Cali for that matter) or some other big city is one thing. Dinky ass rural America - man this shit runs deep and people are sick and tired of it. Iowa City is the most liberal place in the state by my estimation - takes a good bit of air out of that balloon.

People would chuckle and joke about INS raiding the meat packing plants periodically - we will see how cavalier they are about it now. 15 point swing from Obama 2012 to Trump 2016 after voting Dem in 5 of 6 elections previously dating back to 1992. Dems would be well served to come to the table hard on immigration (probably exposing R apathy on the subject in the process) - I am not convinced anyone outside of the White House takes the issue seriously.

ICE raids Nebraska, Minnesota farms

During a multi-state operation led by special agents from U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, a series of criminal arrest warrants were executed for 17 individuals connected to an alleged criminal conspiracy to exploit illegal alien laborers for profit, fraud, wire fraud and money laundering in the two states. Three of the 17 people charged are accused of setting up JP & Sons LLC and J Green Valley LLC, which prosecutors said advertised job openings on Facebook. They are accused of not verifying workers’ identities and failing to complete paperwork required by law before placing the workers in jobs at the companies.

The co-defendants also are accused of using different names and Social Security numbers for the workers “in order to conceal the aliens’ identities and immigration status,” according to the indictment.

Law enforcement believes the alleged conspirators — 17 individuals located in multiple states — colluded to create an illegal alien workforce. Additionally, authorities suspect the illegal aliens who were knowingly hired as part of this alleged conspiracy were exploited by the conspirators through force, coercion or threat of arrest and/or deportation. Specifically, these illegal aliens were allegedly required to cash their paychecks at an illegal remittance business for a fee, have tax money deducted from their pay even though this money was never paid to the government and were coerced to remain quiet about this criminal activity

U.S. is denying passports to Americans along the border, throwing their citizenship into question

The Trump administration is accusing hundreds, and possibly thousands, of Hispanics along the U.S.-Mexican border of using fraudulent birth certificates.

On paper, he’s a devoted U.S. citizen.

His official American birth certificate shows he was delivered by a midwife in Brownsville, at the southern tip of Texas. He spent his life wearing American uniforms: three years as a private in the Army, then as a cadet in the Border Patrol and now as a state prison guard.

But when Juan, 40, applied to renew his U.S. passport this year, the government’s response floored him. In a letter, the State Department said it didn’t believe he was an American citizen.

As he would later learn, Juan is one of a growing number of people whose official birth records show they were born in the United States but who are now being denied passports — their citizenship suddenly thrown into question. The Trump administration is accusing hundreds, and possibly thousands, of Hispanics along the border of using fraudulent birth certificates since they were babies, and it is undertaking a widespread crackdown on their citizenship.

In a statement, the State Department said that it “has not changed policy or practice regarding the adjudication of passport applications,” adding that “the U.S.-Mexico border region happens to be an area of the country where there has been a significant incidence of citizenship fraud.”

But cases identified by The Washington Post and interviews with immigration attorneys suggest a dramatic shift in both passport issuance and immigration enforcement.

In some cases, passport applicants with official U.S. birth certificates are being jailed in immigration detention centers and entered into deportation proceedings. In others, they are stuck in Mexico, their passports suddenly revoked when they tried to reenter the United States. As the Trump administration attempts to reduce both legal and illegal immigration, the government’s treatment of passport applicants in South Texas shows how U.S. citizens are increasingly being swept up by immigration enforcement agencies.

Juan said he was infuriated by the government’s response. “I served my country. I fought for my country,” he said, speaking on the condition that his last name not be used so that he wouldn’t be targeted by immigration enforcement...

I saw this story on the news last night and based on the explanation by the government official about counterfeit birth certificates being issued by midwifes it seemed to me to be a legit concern. As to Juan, I am a little skeptical about his claim. Why would he withhold his last name as he has evidently already been "targeted"? Seems to me he would want his fellow citizens to know that he is unjustly being prosecuted. Also, it always amazes me how the media finds these "innocent" people to interview.

ICE demands ‘exhaustive’ voting records from North Carolina (Charlotte News Onserver, McClatchy)

Immigration authorities want North Carolina elections officials to turn over nearly a decade’s worth of voting records by the end of the month.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina subpoenaed records Friday from the state board of elections and 44 county elections boards in the eastern part of the state. A meeting notice from the board says the subpoena came at the request of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Among the state records from Jan. 1, 2010 through Aug. 30, 2018 that were requested: all voter registration applications, federal write-in absentee ballots, federal post card applications, early-voting application forms, provisional voting forms, absentee ballot request forms, all “admission or denial of non-citizen return forms,” and all voter registration cancellation or revocation forms.

North Carolina has nearly 7 million registered voters, according to the State Board of Elections and Ethics Enforcement. The board said it has more than 15 million documents and images stored within the state’s voter registration database.

The state board plans to meet Friday at 10 a.m. The state board is “deeply concerned” by the request, it said in an email sent to the boards of elections in each of the 44 counties.

“We are deeply concerned by the administrative drain on county boards of elections in order to comply with the extensive subpoenas immediately prior to a federal election, including the necessary reproduction of millions of documents (all ballots, etc.). The subpoenas faxed to county boards are the most exhaustive on record,” wrote Josh Lawson, general counsel for the state board.

“In our view, compliance with the subpoena as-written will materially affect the ability of county administrators to perform time-critical tasks ahead of absentee voting and early voting.”

“The timing and scope of these subpoenas from ICE raise very troubling questions about the necessity and wisdom of federal interference with the pending statewide elections,” said Kareem Crayton, interim executive director of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, a Durham-based nonprofit providing assistance to social justice causes. “With so many well-established threats to our election process from abroad, it is odd to see federal resources directed to this particular concern.”

That sounds expensive for North Carolinians.

U.S. Has Highest Share of Foreign-Born Since 1910, With More Coming From Asia (NY Times)

The foreign-born population in the United States has reached its highest share since 1910, according to government data released Thursday, and the new arrivals are more likely to come from Asia and to have college degrees than those who arrived in past decades.

The Census Bureau’s figures for 2017 confirm a major shift in who is coming to the United States. For years newcomers tended to be from Latin America, but a Brookings Institution analysis of that data shows that 41 percent of the people who said they arrived since 2010 came from Asia. Just 39 percent were from Latin America. About 45 percent were college educated, the analysis found, compared with about 30 percent of those who came between 2000 and 2009.

For many years, Mexico was the single largest contributor of immigrants. But since 2010, the number of immigrants arriving from Mexico has declined, while those from China and India have surged. Since 2010, the increase in the number of people from Asia — 2.6 million — was more than double the 1.2 million who came from Latin America, Mr. Frey found.

Some of the largest gains were in states with the smallest immigrant populations, suggesting that immigrants were spreading out in the country. New York and California, states with large immigrant populations, both had increases of less than six percent since 2010. But foreign-born populations rose by 20 percent in Tennessee, 13 percent in Ohio, 12 percent in South Carolina and 20 percent in Kentucky over the same period.
While people from Asia make up the largest share of recent newcomers, a majority of the country’s total foreign-born population is still from Latin America — 50 percent, compared to 31 percent from Asia.

North Dakota had the single largest percentage increase in foreign-born residents since 2010, Mr. Frey said, with the number going up by 87 percent. Dr. Fadel E. Nammour, a gastroenterologist in Fargo, N.D., who moved to the United States from Lebanon in 1996, said he has noticed more immigrant-owned restaurants since he moved to North Dakota in 2002. In recent years, the state has settled refugees from countries including Iraq, Somalia and Congo. In all, foreign-born people in North Dakota rose to 31,000 in 2017 from just 16,600 in 2010, Mr. Frey found.

“There is more diversity now,” Dr. Nammour said. “You can tell by food. There are Indian places that opened up. We have an African place now. Little things that are a little bit different.”

Immigrants use less healthcare than people born in U.S. (Reuters)

Immigrants use fewer healthcare services and account for less spending by public and private insurance programs than people born in the U.S., according to a study that suggests the foreign-born may be subsidizing care for other patients.

Immigrants’ healthcare utilization was only one-half to two-thirds as high as that of people born in the U.S., the study found. While undocumented immigrants had by far the lowest healthcare use, even immigrants who attained U.S. citizenship still used less healthcare than people born in the country.

In particular, undocumented immigrants account for 1.4 percent of total medical expenditures in the U.S. even though they make up five percent of the population, the analysis found.

And immigrants paid more out-of-pocket than people born in the U.S.
“The most surprising finding is that immigrants subsidize healthcare for U.S. born individuals by paying in more to the system than they withdraw,” Flavin said by email.

For the study, Flavin and colleagues examined data from 16 studies published since 2000 looking at variation in healthcare expenditures based on immigration and citizenship status in the U.S.

In three studies that tracked expenditures over time, increases were steeper for citizens than for non-citizens. Between 1999 and 2006, average annual spending for undocumented immigrants, for example, increased by $500 while spending for people born in the U.S. increased by $1,000.

Based on data from 2000 to 2008, spending averaged $1,836 for undocumented immigrants, $3,737 for foreign-born citizens, and $4,478 for people born in the U.S.

Public health insurance programs like Medicaid also spent less on immigrants than on other patients, which might be because non-citizens are not always eligible for this coverage.

Idaho’s economy depends on ‘foreign-born’ workers
Immigration raids threaten the $10 billion dairy industry in the Gem State.
(High Country News)

The Idaho Dairymen’s Association’s website is clear about who those workers are today: “Of the 8,100 on-dairy jobs, 85-90 percent are filled by foreign-born labor.” They are also foundationally important: “Without those jobs, none of the 31,300 supporting jobs would exist.” According to a recent study, 40,000 workers in the milk, cheese, yogurt and related products industry have built a $10 billion yearly value in a state economy of $72 billion.

Regarding the people in North Dakota, going to Fargo doesn't really count as being in North Dakota. We got a bunch of Somalians in my hometown, I think they have mostly relocated to either Fargo or Minneapolis by this point. Fargo(my home for 7 years) is to ND what Chicago is to a dude living rural Illinois. Up on the edge of the state, people rarely go there. If we could get rid of Cass County and sell it to Minnesota, the good folks at home would likely do so.

Whoever had the idea to send refugees to North Dakota needs their head examined. They aren't going to fit in. Culturally...religiously...language wise...etc.

Now I admit I have not looked at the study data, however, just using common sense, the bolded statistics are laughable. For example, we know that "older" individuals account to the highest dollars of healthcare spending. We also can make some assumptions based on the pictures of the illegal immigrants in detention centers that the vast majority are under the age of forty. Also have you seen many elderly immigrants participating in pro immigrant rallies? I can't say that I ever saw one. Given the demographics of course more will be spent by native born citizens.

You'll have to explain that once you look at the stats. Per capita seems like the appropriate measurement. The immigrants pay more into the system than they utilize services, effectively subsidizing the health care system. It appears that overall you are agreeing with the conclusions, understanding their may be average age differences. But they may also be healthier and have more healthy life choices as well as not engaging in risky behaviors, e.g. illegal drugs, etc., and less preventable chronic diseases even comparing same age groups. In short, they are not the ones raising health care costs for all, but more of a cost benefit.
