- This is Round 2!

- You will have 20 votes for this round (I can't restrict this so please be honest)

- This round lasts 7 days

Please use whatever factors you want to make your votes but please remember that you only have 20 and all votes are public.

When the 7 days are up I will take the top 50% from this round to go on to the round of 25.

We will vote the group down from 94 -> 50 -> 25 -> 10 -> 4 -> 1.

This poll has evened things out a bit, the numbers are looking closer to what they should be...in some areas anyway. Beatles are still getting a bit too much love based on name recognition/early work, but it's good to see Zeppelin, Who, and Stones leading this one so far. Boston, Seeger, and Bad Company probably deserve more love.

Surprised The Doors are not getting any love at all. One of the earliest and greatest American rock bands. L.A. Woman and the self-titled album are top 100 albums IMO.

The lack of love for Neil Young surprises me. I think this poll would be better If we could assign points. Very fun idea.

I figured in this round there would be a small group of bands that would be tied (stones, zep, beatles, etc) or close to tied (how can you not vote for those guys as one of you 20 votes? Surprised how any of those bands could be left out.

Southern man don't need him around anyhow.

Yeah, there's a lot of weirdness with these results.

I again voted for a lot of bands that weren't getting much love, purposely avoiding just about any of the Top 5 since a lot of them were well in the lead. I still maintain that Beatles get way too much love based on name recognition/popularity since they were just about broken up as the Classic Rock genre was beginning. You really don't hear much of their material on the radio outside of Oldies stations.

Neil Young the solo artist had a lot of hits, but he doesn't always get a lot of play in a Classic Rock setting for better or worse. You hear Heart of Gold obviously. Southern Man does get play. Ohio gets some play. After that? Maybe Cinnamon Girl and that's about it. Old Man is a good song, but it doesn't really get much play on Classic Rock stations. Rockin' in the Free World was '89, although some stations will play it on occasion. On top of that, I think a lot of his stuff gets played in limited conditions like the evenings and cold months, while stations often play harder/faster stuff during the day and warmer months. That's not a rule, but there does seem to be a tendency for stations to slow things down and play more mellow stuff like Neil Young at night and in the winter. Nothing wrong with that, but it's limiting. I guess it makes sense, but I never really noticed it under recent years. Probably hurts some artists that play a lot of mellow stuff like that.

Steve Miller Band with more votes than Neil Young. Go home IE you're drunk!

Never been a big Steve Miller Band fan myself. I like the obvious choice of the Joker, although it's played an awful lot. Fly Like an Eagle drives me crazy, just too far out for me. Take the Money and Run...meh. Jungle Love...eh. Rock 'N Me is okay, but wouldn't call it a favorite. I don't know what it is, never really cared that much for the band.

Neil's one of those artists that you either love or hate. Me, I despise the guy. His voice and (especially) his guitar playing just grate on my nerves. I understand why some like him, though.

I'm guessing a lot of people haven't listened to Cream for the vote total to be so low. To me that's still Clapton's best moments.

BKess,
After this is over, you should do a "best classic rock album" poll. Maybe vote for the top 50. Then after the initial round take no more than two albums from any band/artist. No greatest hits albums. If you want to get detailed, you could do best album by decade, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, etc.

Here's a start:
Beatles - The Beatles
Beatles - White Album
Cream - Disarelli Gears
Chicago - Chicago Transit Authority
Fleetwood Mac- Rumors
Eagles - Hotel California
Eagles - Hell Freezes Over
The Who - Who's Next
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV
Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti
Foreigner - Foreigner
Boston - Boston
Elton John - Yellow Brick Road
Elton John – Madman Across The Water
Rolling Stones - Aftermath
Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
Crosby Stills, Nash & Young - Four Way Street
Allman Brothers - Live at The Fillmore
Credence Clearwater Revival - Willy and The Poor Boys
The Guess Who - American Woman
The Doors - Strange Days
The Doors - The Doors
Steely Dan – Aja
Steely Dan – Can’t Buy a Thrill
Santana - Santana
Pink Floyd – The Wall
Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon
ZZ Top – Tres Hombres
ZZ Top – Fandango
AeroSmith – Draw The Line
AeroSmith – Toys in The Attic
AC/DC – Highway to Hell
AC/DC – Back in Black
Beach Boys – Pet Sounds
Beach Boys – Summer Days
Bad Company – Bad Co.
Bad Company – Straight Shooter
Journey – Journey
Journey – Escape
Uriah Heep – Demons and Wizards
Kiss – Destroyer
Guns N Roses – Appetite for Destruction
Metallica – Metallica
Rush – Moving Pictures
America – Horse With No Name
Queen – News of The World
Buffalo Springfield – Last Time Around
The Byrds – Younger Than Yesterday
Neil Young – Harvest
The Police – Synchronicity
Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band – Stranger in Town

1) You've got, essentially, The White Album listed twice. As a resident Beatles scholar I'd nominate at least 4 other albums before the White Album.

2) Hell Freezes Over is a live album and essentially a quasi greatest hits compilation. Disqualified.

3) Four Way Street basically a live greatest hits album. Disqualified.

4) Live at Fillmore ditto above, I'd keep it to studio albums only if it were me.

Other very easy ones to nominate...

Crosby, Stills, & Nash (CSN)
Deja Vu (CSNY)
Paranoid (Black Sabbath)
Rubber Soul (Beatles)
Revolver (Beatles)
Sgt. Pepper (Beatles)
Abbey Road (Beatles)
Are You Experienced (Jimi Hendrix Experience)
Zeppelin I (Led Zeppelin)
Zeppelin II (Led Zeppelin)
Houses of the Holy (Led Zeppelin)
Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)
Hunky Dory (David Bowie)
Aladdin Sane (David Bowie)
Tommy (The Who)
Layla (Derek & the Dominoes)
Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd)
A Night at the Opera (Queen)
American Beauty (Grateful Dead)
Village Green Preservation Society (Kinks)
Aqua Lung (Jethro Tull)
Honky Chateau (Elton John)
L.A. Woman (The Doors)
Eliminator (ZZ Top)
Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Second Helping (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Slowhand (Eric Clapton)
Van Halen I (Van Halen)
1984 (Van Halen)
Band on the Run (Paul McCartney & Wings)
Pyromania (Def Leppard)
Hysteria (Def Leppard)
Sticky Fingers (Rolling Stones)
Exile on Main Street (Rolling Stones)
Beggar's Banquet (Rolling Stones)
Eat a Peach (Allman Brothers)
Brothers & Sisters (Allman Brothers)

I think most of these are in the Rolling Stone Top 500, FWIW.

I would never!

Probably in contention for the #1 "classic" rock album. If you're going with a really strict definition of classic rock and such.

I get the idea that live albums are basically greatest hits and should be disqualified, but there were a few live albums that were just so epic and raised the level of the songs on them to such new heights that they stand out on their own and merit inclusion. A few in my opinion:

Allman Brothers - Live At Fillmore East
Little Feat - Waiting For Columbus
Kiss - Alive
Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive

Derek and the Dominos - Layla and other Assorted Love Songs.

Clapton and Duane Allman, great stuff.

Agree on the The Allman Brothers - Live at the Fillmore. My favorite live album of all time.

I didn't say the list was all inclusive, simply a starting point. I was throwing it together while working so I'm sure there are plenty of other albums I missed or didn't think of. Eat A Peach is a great example. We all have our preferences, so feel free to add your own.

Disqualified..........I do not consider "Live" albums as greatest hits albums, because they are done live without the benefit of the studio where the song can be tweaked and honed to the "Nth" degree before it's released. A live album is as much the bands performance as it is the songs they play.

As far as the Beatles, allow me to make you a little jealous. I acquired the first four Beatle albums direct off the production line at RCA before they were ever released. My dad happened to work at RCA where they made the records. Still sitting in my closet at home.

I really enjoyed both Aerosmith and Boston live, both shows were pretty good. Aerosmith was kind of crazy, even in his 50s/60s Steven Tyler will do all the stuff he's done for years at concerts, like swing out into the crowd upside down by one foot from a rope in the rafters.

I never got to see Queen live with Freddie Mercury, that would have been a great show. I've got a couple concerts on DVD and one live CD album from a show, and it's awesome to hear the crowd singing behind Mercury. Really enjoy their show from Wembley in '86, and their 20 minute set list at Live Aid a year prior is often considered the greatest single live performance of all time. They stole the show in an unassuming time slot that completely energized the crowd and blew away a host of performers that were considered at the time to be bigger acts/talents.

Absolutely. I am hoping that sometime in the near future you can "attend" a concert like that using VR. Maybe that tech already exists. I would pay $1,000 + to be able to go back in time just to attend the Wembley '86 concert.

Agreed. listening to White Room as he builds to that solo, including the solo over the last verse is perfection.

I see some sanity returned to the living in regards to Clapton....

I NEED to see Clapton someday.

One thing that always has irked me about Clapton is his self handcuffing. I always have loved his music, and a lot of what he has done is genius, but he has limited himself too much at times for the sake of being a blues musician. JMO
