46 voters and only 27 for The Beatles when you're allowed to pick ten? Y'all are some pretentious hipster-ass contrarians to leave The Beatles out of the all time top ten.

No Metallica? Bullshit poll. You put Pat f'ing Benatar and Supertramp on the list but leave off the biggest metal band of all time.

If anybody mentions
Rush,
John Von Joni,
Guns and Roses
Rush
Ozzie
White Snake
Metallica

please do us all a favor and ban yourself.

If you don't include Bruce Springsteen or Steve Winwood then you don't know music

I take it you've never listened to Master of Puppets or Appetite for Destruction. Go ban yourself.

Davie Bowie is stupidly underrated by you guys.

I have a hard time thinking of Bowie as classic rock. He was more glam rock, progressive, or maybe just in his own category. Certainly not a classic rock act like Zeppelin or the Stones. Lots of great artists have been mentioned in this discussion that really don't fit into the classic rock genre.

I agree. Ramones, Clash, Metallica, Guns and Roses, Motely Crue, U2 definitely not classic rock.

I'm surprised there's not more love for ZZ Top. I hate their overproduced MTV era crap from the 80's, but 1970's ZZ is some of the best blues/classic rock out there. La Grange is in Free Bird and Stairway territory in my book.

Yeah I don't understand that at all.

44 of 70 now. My guess is that they didn't realize they could vote up to ten times.

No Pearl Jam...no vote.

Pearl Jam is more of a 90s band. They had a new sound that was different from the Rock of the late 60s through some of the 80s. It's like trying to put Elvis in Classic Rock, doesn't really fit.

Other than a few exceptions, I intentionally didn't vote for any band that was already leading in the Top 5 or so of these polls. In my eyes they didn't need any help, so I gave some love to other groups that deserved some attention.

I agree. Ramones, Clash, Metallica, Guns and Roses, Motely Crue, U2 definitely not classic rock.

Guns N Roses is debateable. They got their start in '85 and Appetite for Destruction came out before the 90s. They had some hits in the early 90s too, but a large part of their music was heavily influenced by bands from the 70s. Slash especially looked up to Joe Perry of Aerosmith and mirrored his play. The same can be said for Motely Crue. For those reasons I think both bands qualify.

I'm in the boat that U2 doesn't really belong. They were more Rock at one point, but they evolved into Pop and that's probably what they're best known for and where their popularity came from. Ramones are Punk Rock, but they get a lot of play on Classic Rock stations because they can fit there too. The Clash are in the same boat there. As far as Metallica...certainly Heavy Metal, and they get play on Classic Rock stations, but the selection is limited. You'll hear "Enter Sandman" but not "And Justice for All" or some of their heavier/thrash stuff.

I mean this in the best possible way but if there was anything classic about rock music, David Bowie did it and made it better. Cmon man. His stuff during the 70s is pure art and brilliant.

I used up all ten of my votes before I got to the Beatles. I only really consider their later stuff as classic rock. So their discography is limited to 1966 -1970 when they broke up.

Here is an article supporting this claim
Classic Rock Started With The Beatles And Ended With Nirvana | FiveThirtyEight

The clasic rock radio format began in 1966 and ended in 1995 with a peak in 1977. I dont think the Beatles efforts duting this time period clasify it as a top 10 classic rock band. They are a superb pop rock band but not classic rock band IMO

I agree with this. When you think about it, most of The Beatles material isn't played on Classic Rock stations. You're talking about 3 albums from about '67 onwards that qualify, although some of those songs like "Hey Jude" will get a lot of play.

I am preparing to take a lot of flack for this opinion. They are oldies. Not classic

That's what you get for getting into a discussion about classic rock with 20 somethings.

It's like if they ask us what's the greatest video game... It's obviously Pong with Space Invaders a distant second.

And FWIW... Classic Rock began with Keith Richards' opening riff on Satisfaction and died with VH's last Dave album, 1984.

Saddened by the lack of votes for Sabbath.
The Who is one of the most overrated bands of all time, right up there with U2 and the Eagles.

Odd that someone smart enough to know the importance of Sabbath to the future of hard rock & metal wouldn't recognize The Who's same importance to the future of punk and alternative rock. I'd take the Zepplin catalog over both The Who and Sabbath but The Who's and Sabbath's DNA is much more apparent in modern music.

Sabbath, of course one of the most influential bands of all time, and crazy enough I dont consider them classic rock - they are more like Judas Priest as originators of heavy metal.

I don't think The Who had any influence on Minor Threat, The Misfits, Bad Brains, or any of the bands in the DC, NJ, or NY punk scene. More so the New York Dolls, and Ramones being more influencial in that area. The Who would have been waaaay too mainstream (everything that punks hated). And alot of the punks in the DC area that adhered to the Straight-Edge philosophy would have rejected the drug-induced antics of ppl like Keith Moon

I was never a fan of Queen, but I acknowledge they were one of the best bands of their time.

I could never figure out why so many guitar players like Brian May.

You need to get your hands on Quadrophenia by The Who and give it a few good listens.

Cause Brian May is a bad ass with funny hair

May isn't probably in any critic's Top 10 for guitarists, but he's in the Top 50 in most lists. He's one of my favorites personally, next to Joe Perry of Aerosmith. I saw Perry play the fucking guitar by swinging his shirt like a whip with his guitar on the ground, and it was badass. That guy can still shred.

Take it Easy. Obviously he has Lying Eyes, but we Won't Be Fooled Again....You Better You Bet. I Can't Explain his reasoning. I mean...Who Are You, Meatloaf, to make a statement like that? One of These Nights he's really going to Take it to the Limit.

He is a guitarist's guitarist if you will. His guitar you see all the time is one he made by himself with his dad as a kid. Here is what Steve Vai has said about Mays distinctive sound and style:
). It's yielded everything from the pirouetting, trebly solo in "Bohemian Rhapsody" to the proto-metal riffing of "Stone Cold Crazy." "I can listen to any player and pantomime their sound," Steve Vai said, "but I can't do Brian May. He's just walking on higher ground."

He also has an astrophysics degree.
