Ya , but the bad thing is Barkley is the real deal 18-23 ,5 touchdowns and 257 yards. Looks like our arch-enemy is gonna have same problem we are DEFENSE. Although as Irish fans U.S.C secondary look awful if Floyd had the date circled on his calender he should put a smiley face in it after this game.

Barkley is a little bitch. He aint shit. My grandma could have put up better numbers against Hawaii.

I think I could have thrown for that. Seriously, there was some piss poor tackling on the part of Hawaii.

Barkley is good. Like it or not, he's good.

But that's a terrible showing from a much vaunted and ballyhooed defense.

I watched the game up until halfway through the third quarter. Hawaii really made it easy on Barkley and his receivers. There were many miscommunications on defense where DBs were not even lined up at the snap of the ball. This led to a few easy, big plays. Yes, Barkley put up great numbers, but I'm going to reserve judgment on his abilities to a later date.

Yes, the Hawaii defense is bad. Bu, the kid is a true sophomore. He put up decent college QB numbers as a true freshman...granted, on a team loaded with talent.

There's every reason to believe that he's going to continue to progress. We just have to be better.

The USC D might have looked horrible because they didn't tackle throughout their training camp out of fear of injuries.

usc defense is horrible. they is just no excuse that they gave up that much.

unless they get more practice in all their other games, i'm see them go down in defeat when we face them

USC also started 7 freshmen, so they've got a lot of growing up to do defensively. And they also need to practice tackling in games now.

If you are underestimating them offensively, you're going to be very disappointed

As I said in the other thread, I expected Monte to have the defense playing and the offense to be average. Instead the defense was epically bad and the offense was unstoppable (mostly because Hawaii just didn't have the size/strength to shed block or make tackles). We'll see how much their defense improves as the year goes on... but right now it is pretty obvious that they are a vulnerable for the immediate future. The PAC10 should be very exciting this year.

Agree- Matt Barkley is a nice player.

What I don't agree with is using the word 'prolific' to describe that performance. We all saw the Hawaii Bowl 2 years ago. That secondary blows.

That game is a dogfight IF, the Rainbow Warriors get the 6 at the end of the half instead of 3, AND/OR that horrific punt coverage on the Johnson TD. There's no way that is a TD against any other team on their schedule. The coverage kind of peeled away because of the trajectory of the ball, probably figured it was going out of bounds. Was just an 80 yard dash for Johnson. OH yeah....the asshole hit to the starting QB's head doesn't help either, although UH didn't stop scoring.

If you can look unimpressive putting up 49 points, this would be the case study. USC is an 8-win team this year.

Yeah, that's not even close to being true. Not sure where you're getting your info Polish, but USC started just one freshman on defense, not 7 (they also started one freshman on offense). And that one freshman on defense was getting picked on ALL GAME LONG. Redshirt frosh Torin harris also played a lot and also sucked.

I told SC fans this all summer: You cannot run college practices NFL-style. It just doesn't work. We all saw it with CW, esp in '07. College kids need to tackle. You can't simulate the speed and the cuts and all that in shorts and shoulder pads. You just can't. I know they did it out of necessity, but it will continue to hurt them. And their young secondary SUCKED last night, Jawanza Starling included.

As for Barkley, he's a damn good QB guys. Yes, guys were wide open, but he made plays. He did the same things against us last year. And he's barely starting his soph year. If he was at ND we'd be blowing him up right now.

But yeah, watching SC suck last night defensively was awesome!

Tough to take much away from this game for USC on the offensive side of the ball. UH tackling was unspeakably bad so it's tough to tell whether the USC receivers were brilliant, good, or just lucky they were playing inferior defensive talent.

However, for USC on the defensive side of the ball, the SC DBs were almost as incompetent as the UH DBs. It was sad. Lack of depth on the USC roster is going to be a problem because the Trojans are simply not physical on defense. Hawai'i could pass deep but also run between the tackles.

USC is in trouble, if they're going to win this year they are going to have to win shootouts... unless Monte's D gets a lot better and in a hurry.

I don't have cable, so I was watching the game on Justin.tv online. I highly recommend this for the ongoing comment section. Classic stuff.

SC's defense was bad, but especially the secondary. They were worse then Notre Dame's last season. They were out of place, late, and just flat out getting beat.

SC, because of depth issues, did not hit during training camp.

Interesting chart from the Dr. Saturday blog giving some perspective on U$C's defensive performance yesterday.

I watched the game last night....some of my observations:

1. USC Offence is very good...very deep at the reveiver...TE

2. USE Offence/Defensive Line is very good...

3. USC Linebackers are...so so....nothing close to manluga (sp?) Cushing....

4. USE DBs did not look good at all...the Robely (sp?) kid was getting tourched all night....

Defensive line, no. Hawaii gained 588 yards. The Hawaii QBs had:

A) Time to throw
B) Huge running lanes up the middle for quarterback scrambles

They were getting manhandled by a terrible Hawaii offensive line. It was absolutely pathetic.

Now for that offense, it's Hawaii, but they still look solid and with our defense being potentially bad once again, it's something to worry about. Barkley looked poised, calm, accurate. Marc Tyler ran hard. Ronald Johnson had a nice day. Robert Woods is just explosive. And we didn't see Dillon Baxter, either. I think they'll be very good.
