Unless he's generating conflict among the staff or there's an analyst you want to promote, I think dismissing him outright is a bad idea. I'm glad if Freeman isn't going to be overly sentimental but I think any changes should happen behind the scenes.

Michigan is running that offense. If you hired a coordinator who actually knows how to run the offense, it can be successful. We aren’t successful because we hired a guy with not only no experience in that offensive philosophy, but no experience period. We basically hired a doctor fresh out of his clinical rotation where he specialized in podiatry to try and execute open heart surgery. Just as that is medical malpractice, this has been football malpractice.

But, it’s asinine to say that offense can’t be successful when it literally is currently being successful just one hundred miles north and east of ND. We can hate Harbaugh—and I do—but his O at Michigan is humming right now. You can RTDB and also be creative in it and have a downfield passing game. They aren’t mutually exclusive. You just have to have an OC who can design and implement it.

They motion their RBs out wide, they get JJ to the edge and let him make plays, etc. Also, the best team Michigan has played thus far is arguably UNLV. Chryst's offense is based around having a game manager who doesn't screw things up and let's a bell cow RB get tons and tons of carries. The only similar thing between what Michigan is doing and what Wisconsin ran under Chryst is that both teams generally had good OLs.

We'll know Monday. They can't hide who is calling the plays. We don't know exactly how the prep and building of the game plan will go, maybe freeman will tell us, doubt it. To me, that's probably more important. What you decide on Sunday/Monday will be the main package of plays you believe will be successful vs the opposition, and the ability to coach the team on how to execute them. The rest is somewhat of an art form of understanding sequencing of plays, building to other plays, your team, momentum, etc etc.

Great example, first series vs clemson, we're driving. 2nd down we throw quick screen pass out to tyree. Bad pass behind him, but that's ok, because we have two blockers in Staes and Rico to block 1 nearby DB, and one Safety coming in. Rico does a good job blocking DB right infront of him, Staes has no clue what he's doing, blocks no one, and tyree gets blown up for loss on what could have been a big gain. WE obviously don't convert 3rd and long, kick fg. Again, play calling obviously sucks, but our coaching/prep is pretty darn bad too on the offensive side, and that's possibly even more important and or alarming.

He's a guy I am very intrigued with. Moorhead being first on the list, Kotelnicki is like 1B.

2. I’m not saying he *should* hire Moorhead or Chryst, but there are qualified OCs out there that could run the scheme he desires at a high level.

We don’t need to run some air-raid/spread/basketball-on-grass offense to compete for championships.

There is a real lack of specificity here. Some hyperbole elsewhere in this thread, but Chryst's passing concepts really are out of the early 2000s. He had a very simple 3-step and 5-step game, with even simpler play-action. No usage of RPOs. The simple passing game is one of the reasons he was run out of Wisconsin. I don't think he is the way to go.

If all we mean here is "not air raid," then, sure, all the guys we're discussing run the same offense. But when you start to dial down into specifics, multiple offenses can also be multiple among themselves. Michigan, Utah, and Kansas don't run the same offense, except in the sense that they use similar personnel. Utah makes use of RPOs much more often than Michigan. I haven't watched Kansas enough to even say what they're doing, but the results are promising.

I am not sure how legit the info is, but I heard that Coen had a chance to interview for the job after last year and passed due to Freeman. Didn't want to work with him. Didn't get too much detail into it but I thought it was odd when I heard it and shrugged it off. I am wondering if Coen and Rees know each other well through McVay and so Coen didn't like what he heard from Rees or what.

I'd love to have Moorhead, but so would a lot of other people. He reportedly turned down Saban and the Baltimore Ravens, among others. Hard to tell what he might be waiting on. I love the passing attack and I think with these young WR ND has and will have coming in Moorhead could stick with the running attack Freeman wants while opening things up downfield, which only opens up the run game more. He's an experienced guy who has been a head coach on what is now his third stop. That's what Freeman needs at OC, as we've been saying now all season.

Akron is 124th in rushing offense right now, however. They're 101st in passing offense, where they've really taken a step back. 2-10 last year, currently sitting at 2-7. Based on what he was making as OC at Oregon, what does it take to get him to ND, $2M a year?

There were two rumors about Moorhead when he left Oregon:

1.) He desperately wanted to return near his family in Pennsylvania and took the job that got him there.

2.) He wanted to be his own boss again and took the job that got him that.

If No. 1 is the case, then ND might be really appealing. If No. 2 is the case, then he is not a real candidate. Or maybe something has changed after two years at Akron?

He's gone from the Rams to UK back to the Rams and back to UK. I assume in a year he's with the Rams again?

I think you’re honest with Gino that it’s a kind of tryout but we going all out to interview a lot of SUCCESSFUL, EXPERIENCED OCs and a lot will go into that decision. You can certainly apply for OC opening and we’ll look at how you do the last 2 games, but the final decision will be made based on many different factors. Best of luck to you!

You know you have a bad coach when every team you play, their HC goes out of their way to say how much an amazing job Freeman is doing. You know why coaches do that, because they know they are better than said coach. They want them to stick around so you can beat them. You don't see coaches talking about how good Saban or Smart are at coaching, maybe they compliment their program, but coaches hate that they can't build what saban and smart have.

Kelly used to do that all the time to helton at USC because he stunk.

Not gonna put much in to what he's doing or not doing at Akron. Akron might confirm he's supposed to an OC instead of head coach.

I'd put more stock into what he did at PSU when he was there.
