I don't usually say this about teams that aren't USC and Michigan, but...fuck A&M. I hold A&M personally responsible for Boob Davie. After we beat them in the '94 Cotton Bowl ('93-'94 season), we hired their DC who happened to be none other than Davie. The defense took a step back imo once Davie came on board, we were basically mediocre to crap from that point on until Kelly came on board. We were 6-5-1 that first season after a huge 11-1 season the year before. Davie had a small part to play in helping push Lou out the door after the '96 season too. So....yeah, fuck A&M.

Psst, A&M did give Davie away. Holtz stole him away.

Davie's first year was the first year AFTER the last great OLine at Notre Dame, Taylor, Ruddy, Leahy, Norman, and Zatevski.

The Graduating Class of '94 was the last recruiting class of Vinny Cerrato's.

Holtz wasn't the same offensive genius without Vinny's kids.

Moore's vaunted OLine was swiss cheese without Vinny's kids.

President Malloy, his right hand hatchet Beauchamp, and the AD Wadsworth plus Holtz's intransigence particularly with Admissions were responsible for Holtz's departure.

Davie was a Grade-A shit show as a head coach. But I liked him as a DC. I don't remember the D being as bad as you do. I thought ND had some pretty good D's in the mid, late 90's.

There were certainly a number of factors that contributed to Lou leaving, and while Davie wasn't #1, he helped hasten the process. If I recall correctly, he was in the ear of Mike Wadsworth at the time letting him know he was prepared to take over if Lou should conveniently take off. So, when Lou got the feeling he wasn't wanted by the administration anymore and asked them if he should stay, they said "Maybe that's for the best if you retire."

All this time I thought that it was because Lou didn't want to break Knute's record!

Totally drawing a blank now. Who was the running back for Gorman who dealt the Molly?

Agreed. His defenses were solid. Shane Walton sticks out.

Didn't see a thread for Schmidt, maybe I missed it or maybe it's cause he was a walk on. Good story here:

Notre Dame middle linebacker Joe Schmidt living dream and lifting the Irish defense - Notre Dame Football Blog - ESPN

"That's my brother, I love him," said linebacker Jaylon Smith, the Irish's leading tackler (31). "Both of us in the middle, it's just all about family and making sure we're on the same page. ... The communication level, the focal point, it wouldn't be there without him."

Not many places where a 5 Star All-Everything LB lines up next to an undersized Walk-On and makes comments like the above.

I was wrong. I thought our O would be higher though... LOL. I'm perfectly OK with being wrong about our D here.

If anyone were told that the defense would be #3 in the country, they'd put satchels of cash down on Irish going 12-0.

Something for us all to remember in preseasons in the future. There is always so much "our _____ is going to be so bad this year" and "we'll definitely be able to ____" every year. The reality is that its all speculation until they line up on game day. Before this season started, we were all certain that our oline would be one of the best in the country and our defensive front 7 would stink. People were positive that Schmidt would't be able to hold his starting role and that our secondary was screwed with KRuss.

Shows how much we know. Nothing is a certainty in college football. Thats why we love it.
