Agreed. But would love Stanford to be top 5 to start the year. They should be 4-0 when they play us, and would love to knock off a top 5 team even if they are overrated.

They're first four games:

vs. UC Davis
vs. USC
vs. Army
at Washington

That's very interesting. I don't really know much about Stanford except that they're losing that nasty running back from last year and Skov. Should they be significantly worse this year?

Key returnees: QB Kevin Hogan, WR Ty Montgomery, WR Devon Cajuste, RB Barry Sanders, S Kodi Whitfield, OL Kyle Murphy, OL Joshua Garnett, OL Andrus Peat, DE Henry Anderson, S Jordan Richards, LB James Vaughters, LB Joe Hemschoot, LB Kevin Anderson, CB Alex Carter, LB A.J. Harpley, DE Blake Leuders, CB Wayne Lyons

Key losses: LB Trent Murphy, OL David Yankey, OL Cameron Fleming, RB Tyler Gaffney, LB Shayne Skov, S Ed Reynolds, DE Josh Mauro, FB Ryan Hewitt, DE Ben Gardner, C Khalil Wilkes, CB Usua Amanam

Disney villain: Syndrome, The Incredibles

Before becoming Syndrome, the brilliant scientist Buddy designed weapons. His greatest one was a big, old robot that simply pummeled other superheroes. So, even though Syndrome did not possess any special powers, he used intelligence to become a supervillain. Stanford has gradually morphed into a West Coast powerhouse, and David Shaw's Cardinal demand respect. Coming off four BCS bowl berths, those nerds are dangerous.

Never can tell; will this be the year they run out of borrowed luck?

If I look at the teams on the list that show fewer key retuning players with bona fides, Stanford would come to mind. My opinion. And also their key losses were pretty significant. (O&D line.)

They lost a good amount on D (Murphy, Skov, etc) and I think lost 4 starting OL along with Gafney. Recruiting on the OL has been strong and development of D has been too. Be interesting to see what they are like being young and under a new D cord.

Recruiting Week in Review | Irish Sports Daily

Under Brian Kelly, Notre Dame’s speed and athleticism has skyrocketed. That being said, watching the speed and athleticism that teams like Oregon, Alabama and LSU put on the field year after year inevitably leads one to believe that no team, Notre Dame included, can have too much of this good thing.
Not surprisingly, the Irish have often looked South and West for the elite athletes and this year is no different. Last week, Irish Sports Daily reported on two skill position players that hold Notre Dame offers and would enable the Irish to continue to build the kind of athletic team that will return them to the National Championship game. What have you been missing by not being a member of Irish Sports Daily?
Earlier this spring Cameron Scarlett, RB, 6-2, 215, Central Catholic High School, Portland, OR knew that Notre Dame intended to offer him a scholarship. Still, when the offer did come he was very excited.
“Coach (Steve) Pyne texted me and told me Coach (Matt) LaFleur told him they were going to offer,” recalled Scarlett. “A couple weeks before that I was talking to Coach LaFleur. He told me an offer was coming soon and that they really liked me. It was really exciting. Notre Dame has always been a special place to think about. It’s really high on my list because of the culture and tradition they provide you with.”
Scarlett (pictured) possesses the ability to play a number of positions in college but his first love is running back. A positive for the Irish in his recruitment is that they want him as a running back.
“They’re recruiting me and offered me as a running back,” he informed. “I don’t really have a preferred position, whichever one would help out the offense more, but running back was my first love and first position.”
Notre Dame’s national television contract has frequently paid dividends in recruiting and it has enabled Scarlett to get to know them better.
“I watch their games on TV quite a bit,” he said. “I see that they like to run the ball, which is important to me.”
In addition to Notre Dame, Scarlett also holds offers from most of the west coast elite. Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Cal, Arizona and Arizona State among many others have stepped forward with scholarship offers and the talented Oregon running back feels both humbled and blessed by the attention he’s receiving. It wasn’t very long ago that another Scarlett, Cameron’s brother Brennan, was the focus of all the recruiting attention. Brennan eventually signed with Cal but Cameron insists that doesn’t make him a Cal lock.
“It won’t really have an impact,” he said. “It definitely has given me a better perspective of Cal and showed me more about the school, but it won’t really have an impact on where I go.”
What will have an impact upon where he ends up is the relationships he builds with the coaches and the players at the schools that are recruiting him.
“Their football team, how they’re doing and how they plan to do the next couple of years,” he said about what he’s most concerned about with the schools that are recruiting him. “My relationship with the coaching staff, the school, the academics; from there it goes to how I feel around the school and area and stuff.”
Scarlett does not have a timeline for making a decision, acknowledging that it could be anytime between now and signing day.
While Cameron Scarlett was well known to the Irish as well as numerous other schools, Donte Jackson, ATH, 5-11, 175, Riverdale High School, New Orleans, LA has only recently seen his recruitment blow up. In only a one week period, he received scholarship offers from Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Notre Dame. Jackson was noticeably thrilled with the Irish offer.
“I was very excited, very, very excited,” he said about the Notre Dame offer. “It’s just the fact that it’s a storied program. It’s known for producing some real good players. I was really excited about the fact that I have the chance to be one of those players who comes out of Notre Dame and be successful. They have a high graduation rate. It was a real good offer.”
Jackson is being recruited by Notre Dame defensive backs coach Kerry Cooks.
“I’m going to stay in touch with Coach Cooks a lot,” he said. “He’s a real cool guy so I could see myself staying in touch with him and just taking it from there. I’m going to try to get up to South Bend sometime this summer to check out the place and take the next step.”
Jackson talked about what he’s going to be looking for in a school.
“I’m just going to be really looking for how the coaches interact with the players, how the coaches interact with me,” he explained. “I’m looking for a family environment, a place I can call home in the fall of 2015.”
Jackson plans on taking a number of visits this summer. In addition to Notre Dame he hopes to trek to Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Georgia and Oregon. The recruiting services list him as an athlete and while he’s on his visits he will get the opportunity to see where the respective schools see him playing at the next level. Jackson, however, knows exactly where he wants to play describing himself as a “corner and punt return, kickoff return.”
What Jackson will bring to whichever position he plays is speed, speed and more speed.
“My fastest hand time (in the 40) is a 4.25,” he said. “My fastest laser time is a 4.34.”
Speed like that will undoubtedly get the attention of college coaches, but there’s more to the Louisiana blazer than just speed.
“Everybody wants a chance to coach my speed and everybody likes my aggressiveness at the corner position,” he stated. “I’m a high energy player. I’m strong for my size.”
Jackson doesn’t profess to have a timetable for his decision nor does he claim any favorites at this point.
“I like every team the same,” he shared. “I treat every coach the same. I’m just going to go from there.”

There's no question this ND team should have more talent almost across the board than Stanford. Hopefully it plays out like the 2012 MSU game: top 10 opponent that ND can dominate and get back on the map.

The lines should be about even, but ND should separate itself at the skill positions IMO. LB corps is a huge TBD here...

Kelly talks about importance of new summer schedule | Inside the Irish

With changes to the NCAA rules, the transition from spring football to summer is about to change. And while Brian Kelly has talked briefly about the opportunities that gives him and his coaching staff, he went a bit more in depth on the subject in his latest visit with Jack Arute and Gino Torretta on SiriusXM College Sports Nation.

The duo caught up with Kelly for his weekly radio stop, where the Irish head coach gave a few new snippets that haven’t necessarily been heard in our regular media viewing/listening opportunities.

On the subject of the new NCAA rule changes, Kelly talked about what the coaching period in June does to help the staff and how Notre Dame plans on utilizing it. On offense, it means another opportunity to get the latest iteration of Kelly’s offense installed.

“I kind of like June. What we’ll do is reinstall the offense again,” Kelly told Arute and Torretta. “We got this spring, was install one. This we’ll kind of treat as an OTA in the NFL form in that we’ll kind of reinstall the offense again. Go over similar things that we did in spring ball and maybe even go over some of the things that we struggled with. And then in preseason camp we’ll go and reinstall again a third time.”

One of the things that’s evident with this plan is that the quarterback position doesn’t have a player like Tommy Rees in the depth chart. Sure, that means the playbook gets to open up and the athleticism of the position gets unleashed. But it also means that the position group loses a critical mental piece, with Rees essentially another coach in the huddle and in the meeting room.

If you’re looking for a reason Kelly brought in a quarterback specific position coach, that’s likely one big one. So credit Kelly, new offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and LaFleur for structuring their offseason to make sure the basics are mastered.

“I really think that’s going to make a big different from what we haven’t been able to do or never have done before,” Kelly said. “So all of the coaches now look at June a lot differently.

“Yeah, it’s always been about camps and recruiting. But now you get a chance to be on the field and do some skill work with the guys. Certainly you can’t have formations and you can’t have footballs and blocking dummies out there, but you can get your guys in some skill work and then get some film work with them and I think that’s going to be a real positive.”

Sticking with the quarterbacks, if we are to believe what we’re hearing, while it’s clear that Everett Golson is the team’s No.1 quarterback, Kelly isn’t ready to call him the starter yet.

Over the weekend, Kelly was a keynote speaker at a charity fundraiser for former Grand Valley player Jason Kinzler in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While the event’s main focus was a foundation to give financial assistance to families that lose their primary care-givers, Kelly fielded questions about his football team, where the topic of his quarterbacks came up.

Eric Hansen took notes as Kelly spoke about the current situation:

“I’d rather clearly have somebody be the guy. We’re not at that point, where there’s a clear separation between the two yet. I think that could happen, but it hasn’t happened yet.

“I think Everett has more games under his belt, but you still have to respond when the lights go on. Malik has shown the ability to play better than he practices. Everett has practiced better than he plays. And so we’ve got to continue to work through that and Everett’s got to — when it’s time to shine, he’s got to go take it over.

“We’ve got to get Everett to really grow and develop and then go from there. But nobody has really said yet, ‘Hey, this is my job.’ They’re still competing.”

Those comments jive with what Kelly told Arute and Torretta, with Golson needing more time and practice to become the quarterback that many expect to see in the fall.

“He recognizes that in his first year here at Notre Dame he had training wheels on and we played to the strength of our defense,” Kelly said. “Then he took a year off, and then when he came here, he didn’t know as much as he thought he did. So that’s a real positive thing for a young man to come in and know that he’s got a lot more to learn as it relates to the quarterback position.

“He certainly has so much more developing to do. And I think that’s what he recognized. This isn’t just getting back to where I was, this is, boy, I need to get so much better.”

Malik has shown the ability to play better than he practices.

Where and when? All he's done is practice.

Kelly coach-speak at its finest (or worst).

It is a great article though. I encourage everyone to check it out. 2014 may be good, but 2015 looks BRIGHT.

Looking at the 2015 schedule, the Texas, Clemson, and USC games will be tough. At least 2 of the 3 of those games will be at home.

But I agree, we have A LOT of talented receivers, 2 good running backs, most of the o-line, and Golson coming back for 2015.

I hope the team doesn't have this mindset but it does seem like this team is geared up for 2015. We should lose very little this year and have young guys that are preparing for bigger roles.

We should have a majority of the D back as well and in its second year under BVG.

2. KeiVarae Russell, CB, Notre Dame

Russell had a solid freshman season, but those close to the program believe he will take off in new coordinator Brian VanGorder’s system.

Why? He prefers playing a more physical cover style, so VanGorder’s penchant for man defense suits Russell over former defensive coordinator Bob Diaco’s zone tendencies.

There’s more play-to-play risk, sure, but the shift in philosophies could turn Russell into a star by giving him more chances to make plays and, the Irish hope, pick off opposing QBs.

Linebacker Jaylon Smith might deserve his own spot, but I’ll link him to Russell for now. Just know they’ll both be standouts on the new-look defense.

With all the rave about big physical corners in the NFL now I think Russell will have a tough decision at the end of next year. I really hope he stays.

I don't see that mindset and don't know why they would. It's just that the recruiting has been better so we should have better players in 2015. Doesn't mean the focus in on '15.

I may have worded that incorrectly. I don't think they are either. When I said "the team" I meant how the roster will look in 2015 vs. 2014.

Spartans announce series with Arizona State, drop Irish games

MSU replaced the scheduled games in 2018 & 2019 against Notre Dame with a match-up against ASU. This disappoints me. I like beating up on MSU. I find their fans more obnoxious than Michigan fans. Also, I prefer traditional match-ups. I wonder who Swarbrick will get to fill the gap? Is Michigan an option?

Yeah,I don't like this either. ND should have just joined the Big 10 years ago.
I'd much rather keep those familiar rivalries then play some more Pac 12 teams.

Our schedule is already hard enough without playing a 11th power conference team. Find some piss ant and beat on them early in the season.

When a ship is sinking, you don't get on it.

A gangplank, half submerged doesn't instill confidence. "Glub, glub glub" is rarely an encouraging sign. While that might change and undulate as the years go by, there is always a a sense of safety and confidence in independence.

While I understand the allure, regional pride and economics of creating geo-centric conferences in earlier days, I miss those days when their were more independents. Free market and all that jazz. More interesting match-ups were possible when freed of the restrictions of mandated schedules.

Monetary tie-ins with the likes of ESPN and individual subscription, conference cable feeds have further muddied and upped the ante of the waters. The business model is incredible. Cable or Satellite networks restrict and demand individual fees from subscribers while reaping the benefits of advertising revenue. The losers in this melange are the end consumers. Schedules and "the market" is far less fluid than it might be otherwise.

Have at it. These are simply the ramblings of an old fart curmudgeon.
