I'll only touch on the one point, that sacks=better defense, as i've kinda lost interest in the other points (ie i'm lazy). But also, I found it interesting. Here's what I found....

2014 Sack Leaders
1) Utah
2) Washington
3) Utah State
4) Virginia Tech
5) Boise State
6) Stanford
7) Ohio State
8) Clemson
9) Missouri
10) Michigan State

2014 Total Defense Leaders
1) Clemson
2) Penn St.
3) Stanford
4) Wisconsin
5) UCF
6) Louisville
7) Michigan
8) Michigan St.
9) LSU
10) Arkansas

Take from that what you will. But I took this:
- Only two of the top ten sack leaders were in the top ten for total defense. Ironically 20%...
- Six of the ten top sack leaders were ranked in the AP Poll after the season. Only four of the top 10 total defenses. Not a big difference, but weird.
- scUM had a top 10 defense, WTF?

Damn it Wooly, I went and found better numbers to refute you then they curved in your direction at the very end.

The better numbers to follow: Identify the top 10 defenses (or 20) and see statistically where they fall on a chart in regards to sacks. Then, if there are some outliers, looks to see if they were exceptional in another category to make up for it.

Of the top 10 defenses, 2 (or 20%) had fewer sacks and still managed to be a top 10 defense, it was the final two: 9. LSU and 10. Arkansas

To compensate, they excelled in at least one other area:

Arkansas had the #12 rushing defense and #28 in big chunk plays given up.

LSU was #3 in passing defense and #2 in big chunk plays given up.

Notre Dame was 83rd in big chunk plays, 77th in pass defense and 74th in rush defense.

I'm going to try and do some plots of top defenses with correlation to the various categories measured. I'm now intrigued to see exactly how these breakdown for the various top level defenses.

oh, and as the numbers indicated - I should give you at least 4:1 odds, as I understand it or are odds set from another scale? Actually it probably doesn't make sense to make it linear, probably more logarithmic? Who are the gambler's on the forum? I know nothing of the field, maybe Wiki can provide some data.

Hey, why don't we just take Sparty's DL and combine them with our LBs, CBs, and Safeties?

I agree completely that the idea is to get sacks, but even more importantly, to get pressure on the QB so it's in this back (actually, the front) of his mind that he will have to get rid of the ball just a split second faster than he wants to or else he'll get hit - consistently.

Problem with that is, did we really get many pressures last year, especially from our front 4? For example, Romeo Okwara had 4 sacks, but ZERO QB pressures. That's pretty awful for a DE, and that needs to improve big-time across the board for our guys.

So that is why I personally believe that the trepidation about our DL getting pressure is warranted. I think some people take our trepidation as being overly negative and that we think it WON'T be good. Not at all for most of us. It's more of, I HOPE it will be better but there is good reason to believe I might not.

One name not being mentioned that I saw flash in the open practice was Johnathan Bonner. He made a couple of moves and got to the QB really nicely. Problem is, a flash isn't good enough to get on the field consistently. Gotta show coaches that you can do it with more consistency on the big stage.

lol at ASU as a playoff team.

ASU was 1 game short of winning the Pac 12 South and had only 11 total seniors last year (2nd fewest in football). I don't see it as that far fetched with USC being who knows, Oregon losing Mariotta, and Stanford expected to be just OK. UCLA and USC will be their challenge.

Yea, I thought that was an interesting 4 for the playoff. I only agree on OSU. Of those other 3, I do think ASU has the best chance.

Not sure how Jaylon, who I expect to be one of the best defenders in the country isn't even mentioned.

Agree the Pac12 will be all over the place this year, so not impossible. Improbable though. My money in order would be Oregon (only because they get USC at home), USC, UCLA, Stanford, ASU

Nice group. Only having one captain on the offensive side of the ball is a little different. But it works, I suppose.

Ishaq Williams was denied eligibility by the NCAA.

Happy to see Jaylon as a captain. I think it makes a difference when your best player is out there leading the team

very different. if multiple, figured equal on both sides. figured Folston, Fuller, or Stanley in addition to Nick.

Maybe it was just open to whoever and the votes fell where they did. I am happy for Matthias. Notre Dame man IMO

True dat. Guy has done nothing but put his head down and worked hard. Has taken a lot of criticism, but has made some real nice contributions to the team. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he continued to progress and became an impact player.

he has made some pretty clutch int's along the way...one of my favorite players! the guy just "seems" to be like Joe schmidt...just intelligent, hard working, selfless people who are waaaaaay beyond their years in maturity...

BK will be on the Dan Patrick show this morning.

I'll try to put a link to the segment here, after.

BK said there's actually an elaborate process where players have to go through a University review to determine if they're eligible to be a captain or not. I'm sure they factor in academic performance as well as any disciplinary issues. I believe he said there were ten candidates from which they arrived at this group.

I'm not really shocked that Stanley didn't get it. From his interviews, he's not the most charismatic guy.

Ronnie always strikes me as the Ivory Christian type, he's saving his voice for when the team really needs it.

Remember, Kelly stated that Mathias plays on every special team, and fills to position roles on defense.

I thought the interview was funny. I could see Kelly saying, "Yeah, Farley is a specialist, he is a big play machine!"

It was interesting that Kelly implied that he had more 'quality' relationships with teammates than anyone up for captain of the team.

Ronnie always strikes me as the Ivory Christian type, he's saving his voice for when the team really needs it.

Zactly!
