The east does get some pretty heavy, freak storms. Not fun for fighting fires and so many people turn to space heaters to exacerbate the problems. A friend is the Deputy Chief on a city FD. The stories he tells are scary. This latest cold weather sure created some unique challenges. Be careful out there!!

Cheers and Go Irish!!

It does that. Space heaters are effective when monitored closely. That’s what started that devastating fire in NYC the other day.

Looks like the Midwest is finally going to get some snow. Indy is predicted to get around 8"-12" while South Bend and the rest of northern Indiana could get a couple of feet. Time to get the blower out.

I have a nice collection of hockey jerseys... but living my entire life at the edge of one desert or another I hardly ever get to wear them. It feels so good currently to actually be able to wear them around the house in comfort. I could do this 50 degree stuff all the time but I only get it for like maybe 2 months a year. Loving it right now.

Screw this crap! For the wife I'll allow snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas day, but the rest of the year it can all go to hell. I'd be perfectly happy with palm trees year round if I got my wish. Not looking forward to this storm.

So I feel the need to ask just because I don’t know any better but why the hell would you live in a place like that? I mean I truly don’t understand when you know there are other places in the world which aren’t so brutal and potentially deadly to you or dangerous to your body. What I mean to say is that in some countries that type of environment is a bleak wasteland reserved for sending criminals for punishment.

You should just move to MB and join your fellow Pensytuckian hybrids and enjoy only getting down to 28 degrees overnight once or twice a year.

I will say this though, that environment has given me one of my favorite bands (Cancer Bats) and this great video:

I've been asking myself that same question for the past few years. For the most part you get pretty used to it... what you can do and what you can't do.

Cheers and Go Irish!!

Cack, have you been to Alberta? Once you go visit Banff/Canmore/Lake Louise you'll understand. It's the most beautiful province in all of Canada.

No. I haven’t. The furthest north I have ever been has been to Green Bay for a night football game (0degrees at kickoff) and the amount of shit I had to do to stay warm was quite burdensome. I am used to essentially three pieces of clothing and flip flops most days of the year. They gave me a icepick in my beer at the stadium and I had no clue what it was for until a few minutes later when I went to take a drink and the foam had frozen over.

LOL my GF's mom who's from GA, asked me if it was going to rain when temperature was -11C....classic southerners not knowing anything

Literally the only places to go in the winter in Canada are Alberta/BC for skiing and the mountains. Otherwise you're voluntarily going to an english speaking Siberia.

It was hilarious to everyone there when me and my buddy showed up. They all of course knew who was supposed to sit there so when we showed up looking like Randy from The Christmas Story it naturally occured to ask where we were form. We said coastal SC and everyone in near us basically went

In fairness, the Canadian scene is full of awesome bands. Cancer Bats, Alexisonfire, Billy Talent, etc.
Guessing you guys have listened to Pup? They're a Canadian band that may be of interest if you like those bands.

Some personal faves that aren't in the same vein as Cancer bats etc - US Girls (ironic name) and Alvvays are good easy listens.

I've heard a few songs by Pup. Definitely going to give the others a listen now! Also a big fan of the Tragically Hip (RIP Gord) and Metric.

I like Metric. we can continue the music talk in the music thread. Lets get back to talking about how insane you have to be to live north of Ohio.

Here in PA we've had what feels like an exceptionally cold January. Meteorologist said it was only the 24th coldest on record. Sure didn't feel like!

People here are starting to mildly panic in grocery stores. My only thing is my trip to Savannah this weekend might be canceled.

All the schools cancelled school tomorrow,… nothing has hit yet,… never encountered that before. ‘Sounds like it might snow so we’re just gonna close up shop now either way,…’ lol

Bro I'm sure I've mentioned it somewhere on this site before. When I first moved to Austin there was a day where the temperatures were supposed to drop to maybe 28 overnight and the students at UT were LIVID that they had to go to class the next day. The UT president's email got leaked to students and enough bombarded him with messages that kids were gonna slip and hurt themselves on ice/get into accidents while driving that they canceled class and shut down the campus.

I went on a walk the next day, a balmy mid 50s. I was sweating in my jacket.

Pre-emptively canceling my flight to Savannah because even if my flight isn't canceled Friday, there's no chance the highways won't still be completely iced over. 20 miles of white knuckling the steering wheel on ice covered highways is not the way to start a weekend lol.

Pretty good layer of ice on the cars this morning and the storm is just starting. Had to get a bucket of hot water just to unfreeze the car door so it would open. Got one car cleaned off just in case, but I'm not plannin' on going anywhere in this mess.
