I think Kelly will wait to see what the criminal penalty is.

I think Kelly will wait to see what the criminal penalty is.

If he thinks it is harsh enough, he will leave Mike alone. If he think more of a penalty is needed, he will tack more on. He seems to treat these young men as a parent first, then an educator, then as a football coach. Regardless, the ND haters are going to scream regardless of the outcome. Flyod needs to take care of himself first.
That being said, I think this portion of the situation went better than an Irish fan could have hoped for. It says a lot about ND, that the penalty from Res Life was more worrisome, than the state judicial system.

I'll be honest. While I think he probably deserves to miss some game action (and still might for all we know), I'd be lying if i said I wasn't THRILLED with this news.

I think some people here feel obligated to pretend that deep down (if even that far) they are not thrilled by this news as well because this is Notre Dame and that for anything less than the death sentence to be handed down would be a travesty. The real travesty here would be if his addiction issues weren't addressed. THAT'S what's most important- not missing time. We all claim to care about Michael the person. Well let me ask you this- what makes Michael a better person. Missing X number of games this year or counseling/community service/dealing with this issue head-on w/friends and family? Hmmmmm.......

Gentlemen, each one of us should have a serious soul-search and ask how much of our response is our own hang-ups and how much is a more objective concern for the individual in the focus-of-discussion?

If we can say honestly that we are NOT considering our own "embarrassment" that ND will "look bad", or that we are not making general assumptions based our own limited experiences which may not apply neatly to other complex circumstances, then maybe we are on the path to having earned the right to a strong opinion on someone's life. Even then that's a risky business.

The game-of-life as far as God's view of things is concerned is played at the individual level and not the organizational one. That's why I believe that Notre Dame will make decisions based upon what "we" believe is best for the spiritual good of Michael Floyd, and "damm" the publicity consequences --- That's what we should be proud of Notre Dame being about.

If anyone doesn't trust that Notre Dame is making decisions based upon this spiritual principle, you have already given up on us, and are just a football fan who believes that he has enough information to overrule the considered wisdom [or even the caring best guess] of the administration. I will maintain my trust and faith in my school to give their best efforts to matters such as this, based on far better information about persons and their real-world situations than I have.

I apologize for the rant.

Oh, delightful Irish Fans. You don’t get to decide the fate of Mike Floyd. He is a man whose potential experience in this world your odd ideas of right and wrong don’t get to approach. I, as an engineering student there in the 90’s [graduated with my degree in1995], had the unfortunate experience of meeting the SUDS crew [Indiana’s roving underage drinking Nazis] at the age of 19 where they “busted” me at a party for an alcohol level of 0.06 after the win over Michigan. I was at ND on a ROTC scholarship and it was suggested that I should leave Notre Dame to pursue studies elsewhere. I, instead, accepted the draconian punishments levied, paid for a full semester [thanks dad], and continued my degree, had a very successful six years in the military and an even more successful time afterward. The point is, if anyone of you thinks your concepts of morality should affect the potential of a truly gifted individual, please just kiss your wife and get ready for a season of incredible ND football you can watch on your HDTV. Mike’s demons are his own, as are yours. Let’s enjoy watching him exercise them against the hated Wolverines. I’ll surely exceed a 0.06 this September.
AMEN

What non-suspension?

FLOYD CURRENTLY IS SUSPENDED - INDEFINITELY!

He didn't get an ADDITIONAL suspension next semester on top of the one he already is serving.

And neither you, Prister, nor Hamilton know the terms of Res Life's decision nor when the CURRENT SUSPENSION will end.

I'm actually hearing that his suspension will not last past the spring. He will be eligible to participate in the summer as well as the fall. Not official yet, but from good sources.

I'm not sure most top flight athletes like Floyd see missing summer and fall workouts as a punishment anyways. Some may actually love missing those gruelling sessions and somehow I have a feeling BK will serve his type of discipline/punishment during those sessions.

I still think BK will suspend MF for a few games, I'd be upset if he didn't miss 2/3 games.

Press release:

From Coach Kelly:

"Michael has shared with me the outcome of his hearing with our office of Residence Life, and I'm happy that he has the opportunity to move forward both academically and athletically here at Notre Dame. However, this does not change the fact that Michael is still a suspended member of our football team. As I said last month, part of the reinstatement process to our team involved conclusions to the legal and the university disciplinary matters. Another part was behavior modification, and improved decision making skills. While I have been pleased with the progress Michael has made the last few weeks, there is still work to be done to convince me that he has matured and that he is going to accept the consequences of his actions, learn from them, and become a better person. Until that happens, he will not be an active member of our team."

From Floyd:

"I've met with office of Residence Life, and while I don't plan to discuss the details, I'm grateful that I still have a chance to earn my degree from Notre Dame and be a member of the football team. I know that I still need to meet requirements set by the university and Coach Kelly, and that I have a lot of work to do on that and to prove that I've grown from this experience. I'm sorry again for the poor decisions that I've made and for letting so many people down."

NDatRivals Irish Illustrated
Kelly on Floyd and possible games missed: "I haven't even ventured into that yet."

ChiTribHamilton Brian Hamilton
RT @NDatRivals: BK on Floyd: "This is not about football. Mike has so many things on his plate he has to handle before he can play football.

eTruth_Irish Ben Ford
Kelly: "Everyone has jumped to conclusions that Mike Floyd is going to play football. ... He has a lot of hurdles in front of him."

It would have been better to be silenced on the whole thing. Frankly Kelly is going to look like a heel when Floyd is suited up for SFla. Because other fanbases will say that he talks a tough game but what did he miss? Spring ball, thats it.

Frankly I don't care about anything except Mike getting his ducks in a row. But I can't stand the constant droning of other fans who are calling for NDs head in regards to the Seeburg, Sullivan and Floyd cases.

I don't get why people would be upset if BK doesn't still suspend him from 2-3 games... It's his first criminal offense. There was no aggravating circumstances, i.e., drugs in/on him, fleeing arrest, etc. He'll probably get community service and be on a zero tolerance policy. Reslife did their work, I don't get why some people want him to still get suspended.

You need to read (or re-read) the entire thread then. Lots of good arguments on both sides of the fence.

Some people seem to be concerned about what other fans will say. I personally don't care what they think, and watching MF haul in 3 TDs on their a-ss would make it even sweeter.

*I have full confidence Floyd will have his life in order by the season's start.

I have but reslife did their job. They've given out a punishment, not in the form of suspension. What's the point of having reslife if they're not the final say?

And if you guys think Michigan will be a comfortable win, it sure hasn't happened lately. Frankly, I'm estatic that Floyd will be playing. We need him early considering we don't have a non-conference, soft schedule right out of the gates.

Joe Schad just said on CFL that he wouldn't be surprised if Floyd is suspended for games at the beginning of next season based on what he's heard from BK and others.

Guess what...that's life bro. A civilian gets a DUI, do you really think that all he gets are civil penalties and fines? In some places, you can lose your job. Can't cry about double-dipping there. Say you want to get a job and they see a DUI on your record, you might not get that job. That's double-dipping too. Your wife may leave you - more double-dipping. You may lose custody of your kids. Sh!t, the list goes on and on.

Like jason said, many of us KILL other schools for having criminals on their teams with no punishment, for having low grad rates, for having easy-as-hell admissions. But now we have one of our own in trouble, and we want to give him and a pass??? Suddenly we're not 'different' anymore and we're just like SC and the SEC. Eff that man. Floyd effed up, and when you eff up and you are part of a team, then the team suffers, and yes, that sucks. I can tell you this: When I have a kid, and let's say he's a star player, and his grades dip or he screws up in school....he ain't playing sports AND he's getting punished at home. His team suffers, and that sucks for them, but the individual will leanr his lesson.

Again, old ResLife was draconian, absolutely. But suspending a dude on his third alcohol offense, after drinking and driving, for 2 games is not draconian at all. It's called life, and it's called holding your athletes to certain standards.

+1

Yeah, and when we beat michigan for the first time in 4 years, and Floyd has 2td's and 110 yards receiving, I'm sure you'll be thinking "you know, i'd rather lose to michigan by 3 again than be 2-0 right now"

Reslife held the meetings, they've punished him in a way that doesn't involve a suspension. Am I the only one jacked that we'll have MF to start the season assuming he learns his lesson, stays out of trouble, complete's his community dues, and move forward?

I'd rather hear the critics complain about us "giving Mike a break" and having a 10-win season, than kicking him out of part of the year, cough up a few games because of it, and end with a so-so record and hear critics bring up how ND's still not relevent

You need to listen to Coach Kelly's press conference, which I just did, in full. Michael Floyd is a LONG way from seeing the football field. As BK said, it's only been 3 weeks, and MF has a ton to do in order to prove to BK that he has rehabilitated himself, and even then a suspension might occur. In the same way people were lamenting the fact that he was gone for at least 6 games and perhaps the entire year were being premature, so are you and others for thinking Floyd is back to playing football with ND vs. SF. Nobody knows yet.

I completely disagree with you here as well. Truth is, we weren't supposed to have MF this year, and I still think we'd be a 9 win, possibly 10 win (if things went our way) team without him. Are you saying that we'd be 7-5 if he turned pro? Even though we return practically our entire defense (the one that won the last 4 games for us), every player is in much better shape after a year and a half in Longo's program, every player is now MUCH more comfortable in their respective systems, the momentum the last 4 games brought, several freshmen coming in ready to contribute, a newfound running game which we hadn't found in years, etc etc.

Sorry, but if we can't beat a Michigan team with zero defense, playing spread players in a pro system, with a sh!tty recruiting class and no momentum, without MF, then even if he were to return if wouldn't matter because we'd still be mediocre. But here's the thing...this is not CW's team, and this is not BK's team in their 2nd game. This is a whole new ballgame, and I fully expect to beat Michigan in the Big House, with or without Michael Floyd. Think Michigan in 2008, coming into town with brand new systems in place. We steamrolled them with a mediocre team (and some nice turnovers). We're not mediocre anymore, b/c our defense is legit. No worries there mate.

I worry about teams like Stanford, SC, and Michigan St much more than I worry about Michigan. Last year Michigan scared the crap about me, and my worries came true. This year...not so much...

NDinLA, I disagree with your Michigan assessment. You forget that this matchup is a rivalry, in the big house, and at night. Those are 3 important factors that make this game a toss up regardless of the presence of Michael Floyd.

And despite what others think, I believe Brady Hoke was a very good hire. I still expect us to beat them, and probably convincingly. But it's Michigan in the Big House with Big Ten refs. Anything can happen.

I see your point... but if you think about it, we've been favored the last two years against michigan. We lost both games. I agree with you that we should be able to beat them, but they're going to have a LOT of emotion in this game. First night game EVER, new coach, anything could happen. And you have to agree that no matter what our predicted record is, ND wil have 1-2 more wins just because of MF. He's that good. He's re-written the record books at ND in just 3 years (and he's been out due to injury in many of those games). I accept that I look both selfish and bias when I say this, but I'm happy with the result. Reslife is there for a reason, and they did their version of due process and I'm happy that we'll have Floyd all year (presumably) because if last year taught us anything, nothing is given.
