Hey, a friend and I are launching a website called catchingdinner.com, and I'd really appreciate it if some of the fisherman could register on our forums when we get it up and running. Since I live in the south, I would really appreciate if some one in the north who ice fishes could make posts. The forums will be up soon, so stay tuned.

Oddly enough, I have gone fishing one time in my entire life, and the type of fishing I particpated in was Ice Fishing in my college years. It was real fun. 3 cases of Beer for 6 of us and about 8 holes. We set the contraptions over the holes in the ice with bait on the hook and would wait. When a fish bit, it would pull on the hook and this flag would pop up. We would all then sprint over to hole sliding around a little bit.

I was told we were catching some species of a mackerel. Good times.

Sorry, I cannot contrubite any technical info to your site, (as you can tell) haha.

Alright, calm down, but I was just told that I shouldn't have made this post. Oops. Anyways, my goal is to get more registered users than the forum that Richard regulars, icrontic.com. Win one for Jake (me)!

Got to be a Minnesotan. Paging RichardShans!

I had an employee from Minnesota a couple years back. He was running a pilot plant project for us in Oceanside CA, just above San Diego. He took the job based on the condition that he could take his two week vacation in January or February so he could go home to ice fish with the relatives and da boys. He and his fiancee set their wedding date so their honeymoon could take place in a shack on the ice. Yes, there was a myriad of angling with the right pole jokes, hitting the hole, getting frozen out, ice princess, etc.

Minnesotans are special people.

Dude, I'm a true Minnesotan, and I think that's crazy. In January? Darn that's cold! It got to -30 F without the wind chill!

My two addictions in life, ND football and fishing. The ultimate Saturday in September is catching smallmouth bass all morning and then watching the Irish in the afternoon.

Don't get the time to do much ice fishing these days. Used to tear up the walleye on Erie when the ice was good. Might make my first trip of the season out this weekend.

Then by all means, join the forum. The first post is "Welcome to the Jungle"

Well I share your 2 addictions, except my September Saturday starts off catching Rainbow and Brown Trout in the morning, and watching ND football In the afternoon.

You should come down to the Forgotten Coast to join a catchingfish.com report!

We also want to make a youtube channel, and already have a twitter.

Paging RichardShans! Minnesotans are special people.

Indeed they are. I'm not a native, though. Minn-eh-sew-tahn by happenstance followed by choice.

I was born on an island (Manhattan) followed by some years on Long Island, not far from the sound of the same name. Then there were some years in St. Pete Beach on Blind Pass. After that I lived on a small lake in Orlando and "came of age" on the south bend of the St. Joseph river in northern Indiana. One year in Miami (water, water everywhere) led to my sojourn to the land of 10,000 lakes – frozen much of the year. Sky blue waters and all that jazz.

Though I've been near water damn near all my life, I never "took" to fishing. Not that I didn't try. Hell, one of my enduring memories is of snagging a few catfish (not hard to do – just toss a hook with a ball of Wonder Bread skewered on it to the bottom of a canal and bingo!) and my friend's mother breading and frying them. YUM! This was the mid 1960's, mind you. The toxins contained in those bottom feeders might just explain a thing or two about me.

While I understand and appreciate the allure of drinking copious amounts of beer while braving the elements, while possibly putting dinner on the table, I'm much more inclined to parboiling myself in a sauna, surrounded by a bevy of lovely nekkid ladies, followed by a romp in the snow with same.

Alright! The site is running nice and smooth so far! I want to thank the IE followers who joined: DAndresV, IrishTroutBum, and booFSUhoorayIRISH. I encourage more people to join. Even if you don't fish, if you have a recipe, please join and share! Thanks!

Oh, and we now have an "adult beverages" section, so you can join and know nothing about fishing!

Gonna necro this thread... we got any fishermen on the forums?

I have no experience surf casting. I'm looking to do some when I next go down to South Carolina. Anyone want to help me start at square 1?

Not sure if they do this down in SC, but here is one of the most fun and effective fishing methods I've used on the east coast (Rhode Island). It's definitely easier on a boat, but I've done it from shore too, you just have to practice long distance casting. With surf fishing high quality gear and line is a must. Crappy line will drive you crazy and result in nothing but disappointment. In any type of salt water fishing you risk losing your catch to sharks, but I've lost more using this method than all the others combined. All the activity seems to get the sharks really riled up. One word of caution, surf fishing usually leads to wading into the water with bait and fish in distress.....once while I was snagging Menhaden in waist high water on a sand bar in Narragansett Bay a big blue shark tried making me lunch. Good luck!
