My favorite ND moments aren't football or sports related at all. But if we are talking sports, I will go with Shane Walton's 3 INT game in 2002 to start the season against Maryland. The Tennessee game in 2005 was just one of my favorite overall games. Beating USC in 2010.

Penick's run 1973

Guess I'm older than everyone else in this thread

My senior year-Eric Penick's 85 yd td run vs USC in the Stadium

If you were there it would be hard to believe you'd pick a different moment (even with all of the great moments since that date)

Any ND W vs the scUM but especially when we got penalized for excessive crowd noise. I still bring that up to my pansy scUM friends that their pansy team had to accept a penalty because it was too loud! Although after 3 straight L's that comment is really digging, god we need to destroy them this year! Hopefully we play with big #chiponshoulder

It's really tough to have just one favorite moment for me. So, I'll give just 2 of the many. Both of these games have already been mentioned in this thread:

1988 Catholics vs Convicts. My girlfriend at the time was a UM student and we went to all the home games in Orange Bowl Stadium. Had to settle for watching this one on TV, but it was awesome... turned into a heated argument and a water fight in my dorm room! I knew it would never work between us since she was a Hurricane!!

2006 MSU comeback. During the horrible first half, it began raining something awful here in Phoenix. My 5 year old and I decided to go out into the backyard and play some football. For about 30 minutes we got completely soaked and muddy. When we came back in and turned the TV on, ND had scored and the comeback was on. We finished watching the game together. So, what started out as a pretty crappy afternoon, turned into a great memory for me and my son!

Stepping onto campus for the first time. I was always a huge fan, but man, that day I was somehow infinitely more hooked than ever...

+1. I was about to say the same thing. ND vs. Air Force in '96. Changed my life.

Maybe Rudy's catch on 4th down against Purdue in 2010. Mostly because it happened right in front of me.

This is probably my favorite from my time as a student though...

I've been an Irish fan my whole life.
Irish Catholic from Chicago... it was bred into me.
There wasn't a moment that made me a fan.
But the team coming out in 93 and beating Michigan, after they had 4-5 first round draft picks leave the season before, was freaking special.
This was before you could follow recruiting easily like today.
I had no idea who half the team was... their whole offense was just drafted in the first and second round.

I didn't think they had a chance, but that McDougal kid came out, ran Lou's offense to perfection, and the D put a beating on them.

Still put's a smile on my face thinking about it.
:)

I have great moments like everyone else, the 92 sugar bowl, fsu 93, msu, ucla,... Zip by against Tennessee was good... But in all honesty I have come to connect to the bad memories, bc 93, bush push, all the bad loses lately... I am totally PTSD with my fandom now but it also serves to strengthen my resolve as a member of this base if that makes any sense....

Eric Penick's run against USC.

After the 1966 National Championship, we had Top 10 teams in 5 of the next 6 years. However, during that time we were 0-4-2 against USC, which won the National Championship in 1967 and 1973.

We were the two best football programs in the country.

So, when Eric broke away on his 85 yard touchdown run, it was sheer joy and the loudest the stadium had ever been in my lifetime. Penick's run was down the sideline where the students sat. The roar from the student section as he traveled the distance was bedlam.

The win over USC and subsequent National Championship-with a second great moment when Tom Clements hit Robin Weber to seal the win over Alabama- was icing on the cake.

I'd have to say thats the one for me too...My grandmother was an ND fan, and I liked listening, watching with her...but that day, they became my passion.

The other memorable moments for me were

Rocket against Miami in '90...it was a bitter, bitter rivalry, and we got the last word so to speak with his 95 yard dagger to the heart.

Rocket's kick return against Colorado that was called back...I'll never forget that....guy just willed himself to the endzone.

many, many others...

Beating Penn St. in the "Snow Bowl" is my favorite.

Brooks and Bettis baby... What a tandem that was.. I was about 15 rows up in that corner of the endzone.

The Snow Bowl: Penn State vs. Notre Dame - 1992 - YouTube

IDK how to embed so my apologies. Also, for Tom Hammond on the audio..

And this...

#1 Notre Dame vs. #2 Michigan - 1989 - YouTube

See Rocket Tebowing at about 2:03 before it was known as "Tebowing".. And look at those helmets from back then and how good they looked.

Beating Miami 31-30 my senior year, 1988. What a game! I just sat there after the game, in the stands until just about everyone was gone thinking I will never forget this game.

Let's hope for more great moments this year to make up for some of the gut-wrenching ones from 2011. Go Irish!

For me it would be two favorite moments: the day I got my acceptance letter from ND and the day I received my degree from ND.

Indeed, certainly both moments of Joy, but given the benefit of hindsight, two things that must make you proud of that kid way back when.

...would have been so easy to avoid that challenge, and easier still to get bucked off that horse once you decided to climb aboard...that kid took the challenge, and persevered...Bravo.

1973 Sugar Bowl has to be my all-time favorite. Growing up in the south and hearing all that Alabama stuff ....

Second: The Harry Oliver game against Michigan.

Was there, in the correct end zone, watching that kick go through!!!

I'm 25 so favorite moments are more or less plays that have gotten me excited and were fun to watch despite win/loss, such as this:

#1 - 79' Cotton Bowl - was 10 yrs old made a tremendous impression on me as a young ND fan.

#2 - 88' against Miami - Height of the Catholics vs Convicts rivalry

#3 - 89' against Michigan - Rocket returned two kickoff returns for TD's

Like a couple of others have said, I really don't remember when I became and ND fan. It seems like I was just born that way. But, one of my earliest memories (and the time when I became "hooked" so to speak) was watching ND and Mich. St. battle to the 10-10 tie in '66 on a little black and white TV. A lot of "favorite" moments after that (especially being at the '77 USC "green jersey" game, of which experience I have written about extensively elsewhere here), but it was that '66 game that really got me hooked.

That was a great year. Basketball was awesome that year as well. I made a killing betting on the Irish that year.
