Today may not be great to go by when talkng about how good the offense is going to be. It was a very vanilla playbook. No way would they show much with it being an open scrimmage. This gives the defense the advantage because they are not schemed for and there is not the variety of plays. They also see this offense all the time. Not worried about the offense running on all cylinders in the scrimmage.

Sorry if this has been posted. Just came out an hour ago. Pretty much confirms what has been said.

Rees is looking more and more like our starter.

Plus: The Practice highlights on the same page make me more than a little friggin nervous about the offense. I guess it could be that our defense is just that good but............

I hope the bolded is what happened today but there were a few nice looking plays on offense out there also. It was also the two's and threes that mostly played.

see, isnt it nice when we just talk about our new and improved defense and not bicker over bans and whatnot?

You know better than anyone that such violence is inherent in the system, Dennis, so quit whining about people being repressed.

I guess it actually is expected that our defense would do better than the offense because it was all back-ups and the coaches have already said we have better depth on defense

Offense

Offense

Also---the offense was all vanilla. No way Coach Kelly shows anything.
They close the gates from now on and get serious.

which is why TIM we must stand up to those who claim autocratic leadership just because some woman in swamp threw a sword at them!

I'll bet anyone 1,000,000 vbucks that Crist is the starter come Tuesday. People are reading way to much into Crist playing with the two's today.

People arent reading into Rees playing with the one's today. They are reading into the video above where they both agree that after this week of practice, they wouldn't be suprised if Rees get's the nod. Take a moment to watch the video, and you'll hear them talk about practice over the week, not just today.

I agree that I still think Dayne gets the job, but I wish I had enough vbucks to bet 1mm on it. Not because I think there is much of a chance, but rather just rolling the dice in the possibility of being able to say that "I won a million vbucks betting on Tommy Rees, Kelly is betting a National title on it".

baller status....

Ive watched the video and many other videos just like it. Kelly said at the begining of the week that Rees would get more first team reps. He didn't earn more first team reps.

Kelly and staff have said numerous times that it's going to come down to taking care of the ball. Something Tommy Rees struggled with last year.

Just because some watery tart threw a sword at you doesn't give you the right to wield supreme executive power around here. Stop repressing Dennis!

I want to agree with this (probably because all my vBucks are riding on it.) All analysts agreed that Crist was a lock for the starting job until just recently. Prister and Sampson don't offer any evidence for why they think Rees has gained ground on Crist. Here's what we do know:
  • We didn't get to see Rees practicing with the 1st team.
  • We saw Crist practicing with the second team, and he "wasn't as accurate as you'd like to see from the starting QB." Then again, the scheme was vanilla (a big disadvantage) and our 2nd team defense is bad as$. I don't think we can read into this at all.
  • Kelly is a politician first and foremost. Every comment is carefully calibrated not to inform the public, but to generate some benefit for the program (motivate players, confuse opponents, etc.)

Crist will still be named the starter on Tuesday. Then again, maybe that's just my $180k vBucks talking.

Tidbits from BK's media session:

- Direct quote from Brian Kelly today:

"I have two really good quarterbacks who are ready to play championship football."

Either Kelly is talking out of his *** or we are all too critical of a simple practice film.

- Both frosh RBs will contribute, but it sounds like McDaniel is more game ready.

- Confidence continues to build.

- No frosh starters. Period.

- Ben Koyack is "emerging" and will play.

- Furious battle at third nose tackle.

- Called Jackson and Lo Wood "quality corners".

- Theo Riddick, Theo Riddick, Theo Riddick. Needs the football.

- Tight battle at LG, but Kelly is confident in both.

- Chris Watt has improved "immensely".

- DaVaris Daniels should play this year, but Kelly seems unhappy that he has to. Sounds like there is little receiver depth.

Just saw an interview on BGI of Golson. Man I really like his attitude and personality. I can't wait till he is leading the team in a few years.

Overall, I don't care who the QB is this year. I've already accepted that fact that both of these guys are capable of playing at a high enough level to win some games. As long as our defense plays the way it did those last four games, our offense isn't going to have to score 30+ points every game.

With that said, if we do get up on some teams, you better believe I want to see Hendrix getting the mop up duty. He and Golson are the future IMO. They need the experience. They bring a whole other dimension to this offense.

The biggest disappointment for me this year, personnel-wise, will be if our defensive line isn't what I expect to see; namely beyond great. I am not asking this to be true Game-1; go ahead and grow into it. But I haven't had a continuous shake-your-head-WOW feeling about something associated with ND defensive play for a very long time. I REALLY liked our defense last year, even when they were just getting-it-together early. But now. Our SECOND string D-Line looks like it will be better than almost anyone else's first string line by the time mid-season arrives.

I can't wait until the time when KLM, Cwynar and EJohnson come off the field after softening things up, and out comes Lynch, Nix, and Tuitt. Power, speed, line-of-scrimmage destruction and movement, NO traditional pocket security, disruption, disruption, disruption....As I say, if this doesn't happen it will be my biggest surprise and disappointment. If it does...other offenses will be in "make-it-up-as-you-go " mode.

Ever since scouts were in awe at what Lynch, Tuitt, and IWilliams did together at the HS All-star game --- and it was over-the-top awe --- the undeniable feeling was that these guys TOGETHER were creating something much bigger than their parts. And Big Lou seems to comfortably fit right in the middle. This is right. I want this to be true --- just like all the Signs say.

My expectations became that way after the all-star game as well.

My expectations are also high for Flemming and the other LBs. I think (I hope) ND finally has a front 7 that the guys on Game Day will have no choice but to discuss on a weekly basis....mainly because of what you've already said, which is that it's not just the starters, it's the 2-deep as well.

Looking at our schedule, I see a lot of teams on our schedule that are very thin on their offensive line. I hadn't really thought about it until reading your post, OMM. But I will be disapointed if we dont have a bunch of games where it plays out just like you said. Our first string goes to battle and physically dominates the other teams o-line. Then once they are physically, mentally and literally beaten, they have to deal with our incredibly talented and fresh-legged youngsters, who will be hungry for blood, the rest of the game.

I am much more concerned over the fact that the Moon will be in a Waxing Crescent phase. "Let those who have ears to hear, hear." That's what I'M talkin' about!!

...what was this thread about?? Sorry.

I might be reading a little too much into this but there were some photos on ND Football's facebook page from Sunday night. In this picture it appears to be the 1st team offense and the 1st team defense, correct me if I'm wrong, and that appears to be Rees lining up with them. You can't see his number, but in the other pics Dayne is wearing a knee brace and this player obviously is not. Kelly said that he was going to decide over the weekend so I wonder if this carries any weight.
