Sunday MVPs - per BK twitter

- Asmar
- Shayne
- Mike Young

Seeing Asmar and Shayne on this list makes me happy....Also, Mike is breaking out this year and I wouldn't be surprised if he leads the team in YPC (excluding a low sample size from Lenzy/Keyes bombs).

I’ve always thought Young is one of those guys who just seems like a ballplayer. Not the biggest or the fastest or the strongest but put him in there and he makes things happen. Sounds like he’ll get his shot this year.

The talent at the wide receiver position has me really really excited for this year. A pessimistic me mentioned that after Chase Claypool and Chris Finke, there wasn’t much in the way of established talent. However on the positive side it opens up the possibility of seeing a bunch of different talented dudes.

#1 Chase Claypool
#2 Chris Finke
#3 Kevin Austin (after he gets his suspension and stuff sorted)
#4 Michael Young
#5 Braden Lenzy
#6 Javon McKinley
#7 Lawrence Keys III
#8 Joe Wilkins Jr

That’s just a total guess and feel free to rip it to shreds but that’s such a fun group of guys with all of the different things that they bring to the table. You’ve got a couple of big bodied dudes (Claypool/Austin/McKinley) and you’ve got a couple of burners (Lenzy/Keys III) and super smart possession/slot guy in Chris Finke. It’s gonna be really fun to see how this all shakes out and how Chip Long uses all these guys. 12 scholarship WR’s allows for lots of competition and hopefully some good depth which I hope to see this season.

It's just a handful of reps there but it looks like Phil J has really cleaned up his throwing motion.

Phil's game is running and bombing. He isn't going to be comfortable in the pocket unless he can get the defense on their heels with the threat to run. It's no coincidence that his game improves when things are live (i.e., pads and hitting).

I would love to see a NASCAR package on passing downs to capitalize on some of this D end pass rush talent. Some good camp updates, looking forward to this season.

I think Keys and Austin will be battling for the 4th spot. I think Braden needs to more consistently catch the ball but he's going to get some deep threat opportunities.

I also think Michael Young will be 2nd in receiving yards.

And I have all of these opinions without seeing a single live minute of practice :)

While I agree with you, I would like to remind you this is the exact same thing a lot of us thought about Wimbush lol.

Bilal: Sincerely and thoroughly hope that I'm wrong in this "intuition", but Coach did the same regular praise boost for Morgan during the camps, and Morgan was just "OK" --- and that's due to the clever usage of him as a sort-of linebacker and battering ram.

I'm expecting to see Bilal used similarly, or in an even cleverer way by Lea to max his strengths ans mask his weaknesses. It is my trust (almost awe) in Lea's ability to sculpture defensive play which gives me optimism in guys like Bilal (and the newbees) playing high class football.

Media didn't get to see much today, only live action was 1 on 1's. II guys reported Javon McKinley beat Troy Pride twice in 1 on 1 reps. They're starting to eat crow with the words they spoke about him after the 1st practice of camp

Heh. The price appears to be a slower release. I'm totally fine with that tradeoff.

I agree and I would too. Also, I think at this point we can collectively move on from this topic. From the sounds of it there have been no issues, at all, since that first practice. This should at least be enough to table it until further notice. Especially for those that were ready to move on from him altogether.

This is likely a dumb question but do any of the analysts think there is any chance PJ ends up the starter this year, not counting Ian getting injured or anything that forces him to sit? All reports have been really good regarding PJ after that first practice and not much has been mentioned about Ian. Is that because Ian has been doing what he's been doing, being consistent, and PJ performing well is a new development? I'm looking forward to when it's PJ's turn but Ian is who I want under center this year.

My favorite QB since I started watching ND was Brady Quinn and for some reason Ian reminds me of him. Maybe not quite the arm strength, maybe shorter, but still similar. I just want to see him break the 2nd year QB curse, too.

I definitely think it is more this. Ian is a captain and should start all year, which is a good thing.

The only way Ian isnt the starter this year would be if something similar happened with Wimbush last year and you just had to make the switch. I don't think that will happen with Book. Barring injury, Book will be the starter the whole year IMO

Best possible scenario is that PJ is so good, the allow him a series or two/game because there is minimal dropoff and a huge change to make a big score. I don't like juggling QBs and that's not what I'm suggesting but if we get a double digit lead on some teams, it'd be nice for Phil to get in the game while there are still important snaps to be taken.

Wait, did someone actually ask if there's a chance of benching Ian for PJ?

This is why we can't have nice things... Lol

With regards to the kicking competition sounds like it was Doerer's turn today. All 11 attempts were from 33 yds, middle of the field, and Doerer was 5 for 5 while Leonard was 3 for 6.

Hard to see a freshman beating out a junior for a starting job, especially one as important as kicker.

Maybe Leonard will be our deep place kicker and Doerer takes the short stuff

No I completely made this up in my head. The reports on PJ have been so good and barely anything on Ian, other than captain, so I got a little worried. Figured I'd try to ease my mind by asking the board. I like PJ but really want Ian to kill it this year. He just seems like an ideal ND QB. Not too arrogant, a hard worker, and won us lots of games last year

There were question marks with Wimbush before the season started. None with Book this year.

Bilal is more athletic than Morgan was and to be fair to Morgan, he was actually good before he busted his shoulder up. He played essentially the entire 2017 season with a labrum injury that needed surgery.

Hopefully Bilal is healthier and his athleticism provides a bit more upside than Morgan.

PJ has a ways to go to get where Book is. While reports on PJ have been positive, it’s been centered mostly around his throwing motion and accuracy. He’s still developing the confidence aspect which his improved accuracy should help. Get some big leads in the first two three games and let PJ get some reps under fire.
