Mr Kelly can Kevin come out and play?

No, Tommy, he's grounded and I've taken his phone away.

Finke will play well enough to make an NFL team this year.

Seems pretty damn identical to the Dexter situation. It wasn't like KS, where he was pretty much MIA until USC week. Austin has clearly done enough in the eyes of the coaches to be considered "starving".

Kelly was answering directly regarding Austin's availability in the first month, and he punted. Basically, don't expect to see Kevin in September.

The issue that makes this different than Dexter is that Austin may not be able to afford being out that long. Dexter could, because he brought a dynamic element to the RB position that we were lacking. Austin is very talented, but so is Lenzy, Keys and Wilkins. They all impressed in Spring and wouldn't surprise me if they looked great in Fall as well with the opportunity to see the field more. That means Kevin is going to have a hard time finding the field while those 3 are getting their shot to prove they belong on the field as often as possible. Targets will be hard to come by between those 3, Claypool and Finke and also Kmet, Wright and possibly Tremble. Not a bad problem to have.

I don't know who will be named captains or when Kelly will make the announcement, but here's my list of some potential candidates with my guesses in bold letters:

Offense:
Ian Book
Chris Finke
Liam Eichenberg
Tommy Kraemer
Chase Claypool

Defense:
Tony Pride
Alohi Gilman
Jalen Elliott
Asmar Bilal
Julian Okwara
Khalid Kareem
Daelin Hayes

I would say Book, Elliot, Okwara, and Claypool

Definitely agree about Book, think this would be the first QB captain under Kelly? Forget if Zaire or Crist were captains, but I don't think so. Given that Kelly hinted at up to six captains in his presser, I'd go along with Eich/Tommy as an OL captain, but I think Finke is far more likely to receive the C than Claypool. It was fairly striking during that group shot a few days ago where two thirds of the team (including Finke) were wearing the 'starving' camo but Chase was not.

Gilman is a stone cold lock to get the C imo, and if we are doing 3 apiece for O and D then Elliot is a good shout but otherwise, I think the second one goes to a lineman in KK or Okwara.

I'm 99% sure Book would be his first QB captain at ND. I thought Kizer had a shot in 2016 and who knows, maybe if Kelly hadn't had that whole tryout between him and Malik through the first game and named Kizer captain, maybe there would have been better leadership in offense.

Book and Gilman definitely. After that, there's several that could make it.

On O, Finkster has to be in contention. I'd love to see him and an OL.

On D... Okwara, Kareem, Elliot, and Pride all seem worthy.

Give us 5 or 6 please.

Except reports have been that it’s not the same situation as Dexter.

Well, it's either school policy (aka. weed) or it's academics.

If it were a legal issue, then there would've been an arrest coupled with it, since there is no way any university can cover that up.

If it's academic, I think we would've heard about it from Kelly in the pre-camp PC. That's where he broke the news regarding Mack and Bryant's suspensions. Academics is an all or nothing thing. Either you're fully eligible or you're fully ineligible.

If it's "school policy", we're never going to hear about it. So no disrespect to Prister, but hard to imagine it's not similar to Dexter, because there's not much else it could be, since nothing has broke about it.

Yeah. That could never happen.

But, no, I agree, this seems like university/team rules stuff, so there won’t be a straight answer. Hard to know if it’s a discrete episode - like a flunked drug test (that was supposedly Dex’s thing right?) or something more persistent, and perhaps more team-oriented. Remember Austin was also unofficially suspended for two games late last season.

They still feel he’ll be out the first four of this year.

Just watched the highlights. Very worried that Phil still can’t throw a spiral.

Some notables from reading the various reports.

- JOK is on another level athletically and is putting it all together. One noted he’s so fluid in coverage we may not need a nickel as much.
- Lamb seems entrenched as the #1 Buck
- Donte Vaughn ran out as the starting Field CB
- Crawford started at Nickel but then got work at FS.
- Simon was at Buck for the day.

Sounds like his ball actually tightens up the deeper downfield he throws. Should be noted that he again had some beautiful deep ball completions today.

So Mike is our only question mark at this point. JOK is 1 and Moala is 2 at Rover, Lamb is #1 Buck, who will take the Mike?

Donte Vaughn starting at CB for us would be a huge win, if he's healthy. Some of the early reports indicate he had very tight coverage.

If Bilal can completely transform his game or Simon has everything 'click' or if Bertrand can be a savant or if Drew White can be a complete, healthy Mike then we might have some questions answered. :)

Now I hope to hear the depth at DT looks outstanding.

Spears got quite a bit of work today and made an impression on some. Saw a couple pictures of Franklin and he looks in solid shape.

Assuming today wasn't an aberration, based on these reports if the middle of our defense can be any good at all we should be spooky.
