The D ends AND scheme can help the inexperienced linebackers. Won't add up to Tranquill and Coney, but you can do some things schematically.

ND's kicking game (kicking and punting) will lose them at least one game this year, if not more.

Hoping they do a little work on punt return team as well.

So we have a schematic advantage again?

It's nice that we only have one or two glaring weaknesses heading into camp. Speaks volumes to the depth the staff has built through recruiting.

And there are still a lot of bodies with various skill sets that can be put together at LB. So, while the concerns there are valid, especially early on in the season, I'm in the optimistic camp that we will reload at LB not rebuild.

Agree, especially at LB. It's more of a reload situation. My only concern is whether the new guys (and to a lesser extent the new starters on the interior DL) will be get up to speed by the Georgia game. I do wish some of those LBs could have gotten more game reps last season.

Special teams also could be bumpy, but there's really only so much you can do about kickers/punters, and thus only so much time you can actually spend worrying about it. They are who they are. Picking up that kid Leonard was a smart move.

Otherwise we seem to return talent and/or quality depth at pretty much every position. I expect the OL, and the offense in general, to be much improved, and the pass defense to be quite good.

Just listened to the 247 podcast. Tim and Tim said that Hamilton, Wallace, Bertrand, Carrol, and Cam Hart have all had fantastic summers thus far.

Especially Kyle Hamilton. They sounded super optimistic about Kyle. I don’t think Quinn Carroll, JD Bertrand, or Cam Hart see the field other than on special teams cause those depth charts are stacked with numbers but I could see some secondary guys getting some action. Bertrand is a consensus 4 star LBer from SEC country so it doesn’t surprise me too much to see him flashing early.

Can we start the season this Saturday? I hate August.

August I can handle because I have NFL training camp, preseason, fantasy football, and Notre Dame fall camp to keep me entertained. July is the month that sucks for me. That month just draaaaags.

The BK presser should be this Friday and they'll be in Culver on Saturday, if my investigative work is accurate.

Just wait until we get to the first Thursday of the season... and then the realization hits that ND doesn't play for another FOUR days lol

Wallace's name has been mentioned almost everywhere already, and they've only had their early work to get young guys acclimated... hopefully that development holds over Fall camp, because the added help/depth at corner would be huge.

Also, it sounds like Cam Hart may be another BK special as an "Under the Radar Wide Receiver that is Actually Good." 6-3 and built like a linebacker, but also faster than they thought.... I LOVE PRESEASON HYPE

With a large emphasis on Hamilton. They stated that he could be a difference make right away and will probably be the first safety off the bench. Fall camp hasn't started yet and a lot of things can happen, but wow those were some very positive thoughts about him.

I'm guessing the media is going to be asking about Jalen Elliot playing nickel to get Hamilton on the field throughout Fall Camp.

Hamilton replacing Elliot as the starter and Elliot only playing in nickel? Or moving Elliot to nickel when they are in nickel?

Maybe the ladder. The Elliot/Gilman duo at safety is etched in stone. No player is disrupting that.

Correct the ladder. Prister himself said he thought any talk of that in the spring was nonsense, but he said after the reports over the summer he is much more interested in that now.

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet but the DE terminology has been changed from SDE to BIG end and Drop to Shark End. So you'll see that used more often with the media during camp.

Any reason why?

Sounds like a couple factors played into it. 1. (Recruiting/Draft) Drop end certainly doesn't sound appealing for a guy that is supposed to be your premier pass rusher. 2. (Responsibilities) How often does the Drop actually Drop and the BIG end isn't always on the strong side.

Seems like with Elko out the door this was brought up by Elston and his guys.

I like "Drop" now being "Shark," purely for psychological reasons.

If you're a shark, you're hunting wherever you need to. Usually it's as an aggressor, getting after they prey (QB), but occasionally you need to head to open water (coverage) and be a general threat.

Okwara is a model of how you can be elite as a drop, both as a pass rusher and as a coverage guy into the flats/buzz zone. His INT against scUM was huuuuuuge.

He's one to watch, IMO. Has a great opportunity in front of him.

I'm a fan as well. I always thought Drop End was a bizarre term for this position. Not only does it not sound appealing as you are pitching perspective players (especially the type of player you are trying to get) but how often are you even dropping said player. I'd be interested to know how often the Drop End was actually in coverage, on a percentage of snaps. Doesn't seem to matter now, but Elko always struck me as a detailed oriented guy and that never seemed to click.
