I was generally pulling for Argentina but don't really understand what all that scrapping was after the game. Pretty aggressive and frankly pretty unusual after a big game like this. And it's not like Argentina got robbed or something; Spain clearly deserved to win.
Did anyone address it at all?

Others pointed out how dirty Argentina plays. I basically waved it off as if all teams basically play with a level of "allowed" or "expected" foul play. Soccer has always been that way. Argentina does seem to play that way on purpose. Almost to try and knock the other team off their game. Or to try and get more free kicks and PKs, etc. It definitely seems like strategy. However, #5 on that team is a massive d-bag. I noticed it all tournament long. Not a shock that he was involved in the altercation after the game. During the live feed, I'm not sure TV cameras or crews picked up on the fight immediately. They have other players beyond just him who take things too far. I'm a Messi fan first. Cheering for Argentina was a direct cause of being a huge fan of Messi. But w/o Messi, that team is just a bunch of assholes.

Argentina just went a full 90 without a shot on goal and played like jackasses throughout, couldn’t have a more different takeaway than you 😂

Yeah that was the definition of domination. Spain controlled the entire match. Argentina couldn't do anything. Only through the insane level of play from the goal keeper were they even still in the match at the end. Shots on goal tell a huge story in this one. It was never as close as the score revealed. In truth, however, the score is all that matters and Argentina (goalie specifically) did enough to stay close and have a chance. In the end, the best team won. Personally, I would've loved to have seen Messi go back-to-back and leave on top. But Spain is so damn good.

I think on average Argentina is just worse at almost every spot and when you are worse you have to compensate somehow and that’s what we saw. I mean look at what Spain did when Messi touched the ball. He was fouled almost instantly, intentionally. Blah blah blah refs Messi treatment, they were taking him out. It is what it is.

Argentina will likely pay their dues of sorts at the next WC when they are not a Top 10 team (at best)

Yeah, I have no reason to have a grudge against Argentina. I have no dog in any fight. That said, I find them to be scumbags. They play dirty. They blatantly try to intimidate the refs. They act like a-holes after the game. Messi is the best ever, but he's a whiny bitch too. Playing games trying to get a red card against the guy from Spain because his teammate was an idiot and got sent off. That Enzo guy wagged his finger "no" after he got his 2nd yellow like the ref had no power and he was just going to overrule him. I don't like them all.

Ugh...just seen my daughters soccer schedule as a freshman. Why the hell do they have 7pm start games on back to back nights....with both schools being over an hour from the house. I might have that explosive diarrhea bug for those.

Messi is the most protected player in the history of sports, if you watch MLS at all you know this to be true. I don't actually believe FIFA was intervening to help Argentina, but when you consider they are the only team to not have a single VAR call go against them the entire tournament it looks funny. They showed their true colors post-game and I'm very happy they lost.

they do this everytime. Its basically to signal to their people that they care. If they dont shithouse and fight like this the people presume they aren't emotionally invested and none of the players want a reputation like that. Its very childish from the the outside but thats Machismo culture very prevalent in Latin culture

I do find the pearl clutching over Paredes and Fernandez is hilarious. We can’t have these wild Argentinians in the game. Paredes plays at Roma and played at PSG. Fernandez plays at Chelsea. These soccer talking heads acting like they pulled two thugs out of an Argentine jail cell. These are European champions league players lol

Ok, throw your stones,… but I will say I don’t understand the Argentina hatred,… is it honestly because won last time? Messi is incredibly likable for a world renowned super star and there are dirtier teams and more obnoxious fan bases out there,… and any country that can objectively do bbq at least as good or better than us yanks get a huge nod of respect… I was going for Spain but wouldn’t have hated it if Argentina won like I would have if England, France, Mexico (who aren’t on this level but still), or Brazil had won it,… Argentina is one of the easier to root for soccer giants imo,.. maybe only Germany because my mom is half German is easier to me.
It's basically just the Patriots or Chiefs or Alabama Effect in that people are jealous, envious. resentful, etc. of their success and search out moral/political reasons to justify this so they feel better about it. Argentina became a boogeyman stand in for whatever the person hates the most: racism, Zionism, etc. Of course this will take one to silly places as they twist themselves into pretzels and led to a lot of people cheering for England/France/Spain (the Triple Crown of Colonization) for "moral" reasons over Argentina.

Well, this is soccer more or less, in the Americas. Almost no team in the Americas has the sort of high end talent that UEFA teams do (other than Brazil historically and sometimes Argentina), so they make up for it in other ways. Honestly, compared to the way the average Mexican side plays against the US, Argentina looked like a team of nuns out there. I'm not justifying it necessarily, but it just is what it is. Watch the Copa America or the Gold Cup and you'll see what I mean.

For sure. And I have no problem with aggressive, physical play during the game, in any sport. I respect the "rock fight in a phone booth" approach against a more athletic team. But that's during the game. When the game's over, in hockey, basketball, football playoffs, the players line up and shake hands and hug. Not go and choke the other guy.

With how many teams are now in the world cup I have to think it'll be in the US again fairly soon.

It's just too easy for us to put together good bids and tournaments at scale with the abundance of state of the art NFL stadiums.

I once saw a player from Panama (I believe) during a USA corner prep moment, actually stand behind Jose Altidore and take a giant bite out of his back "for a distraction". This was during my first year or two trying to get interested in soccer, and watching Mexico and most Latin Teams convinced me that they all had violent dirty animals on their teams.

There's some rule about how the World Cup can only be held on the same continent one in every three tournaments. This one was North America. Next one for some reason includes Europe (Spain/Portugal), Africa (Morocco) AND South America (Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay will host early games for some reason). Then Saudi has it in 2034, which knocks out Asia.
So unless they change that rule, effectively the only places that could host in 2038 are Australia and North America. It's coming home.

The setup for 2030 is insane but I imagine they make an exception and Africa or South America is hosting in 2038. The South American portion is because it is the 100th Anniversary and will likely be the first group stage match for each of those 3 and that’s it.

If they expand to 64, which they should over 48, realistically host selection will drastically change and US stands to benefit hosting ASAP each cycle. The third place stuff was a joke and 64 means more groups but back to Top 2.

Brazil, Germany, France. Those type countries cannot host a 64 team tournament even with the infrastructure already in place barring massive stadium upgrades and keep the profit at the level FIFA saw this year. Europe will have to find dance partners like the Morocco, Spain, Portugal bid.

Outside of the US, what single country could host a 64 team playoff? They'll all have to be multi country hosts. Not a bad thing, just more of a logistical challenge with all the visas.

France and them have the stadiums but I would imagine you would see a revenue drop off as you dip into smaller stadiums. So to keep it at the level you saw the US produce, nobody.

Shoot and we didn't even use any college stadiums, right?

They might not have as many big stadiums, but they also probably don't have the demand for the high ticket prices, especially for non-major matchups, so a smaller number of seats could help to keep prices high.

Plus, what they lose in seating, they may be able to make up in broadcast rights because almost anywhere in the world has better times for Europeans than our timezones. And this is even more true in a 64 team tournament that is more likely to have China and/or India, which essentially paid nothing for rights in this tournament due to bad timing and their teams not being involved.

Could be valid. I’m mostly guessing + Spain/Portugal setting a new precedent
