National Signing Day (early '18) - December 20th - 22nd, 2017

Will update as they sign with a "signed" during the period.

Please let me know if there are any corrections or updates. I read on 247 that all were expected to sign, but "all" was 18 at the time.
https://247sports.com/college/notre-dame/Article/Storylines-Notre-Dame-football-recruiting-early-signing-period-111777700
For Notre Dame’s 18 commits in the 2018 class, all of them are expected to sign early with the Fighting Irish during the Dec. 20 to 22 window.

Expected to sign early (247 Composite National/Position Ranking):

Should I merge the two threads?

Also, FWIW I think that the ND staff expect literally all of the current commits to sign early. I can't think of a name I've heard that isn't expected to sign early at this point... will double check that in a second.

Nah, you can delete mine. I moved my posts into this one. Thanks Lax!

I agree, the staff seems to think everyone will sign. It's recruiting though right? And Gordon talked about committing today on his birthday right? And there are others that might be close. Should be a good thread to follow this week even if no surprises. Should be interesting to see if other teams have that kind of success. I think some won't.

I think it's going to be chaotic for a LOT of teams that have in years past really tried to "oversign"... there isn't really true oversigning anymore (which is why the SEC has come back to the pack), but in general the teams you see "close strong" most years are now stuck in a weird game of chicken with their prospects. I would get it has also thrown a wrench in the whole bag man process for a lot of schools.

I linked an article from 247 in the op where they said all were expected to sign, but all was only 18 at the time.

Will certainly be interesting for those who are committed, but say, "I think I'm gonna wait". I'm sure the paid sites love this as the drama will be good for some of these teams and kids. I personally love this. Hoping it kills most of the BS drama on the February NSD.

I agree with both of you. I think this will be a blast to follow. Saban hates it from what I understand which makes me love it.

Yup, makes the kids either sign, or declare that they are still open. And lets kids who might get pushed out late in the game, seal the deal early. Saban and several others are likely not feeling it.

Anyone know if the same rules apply for the early period as the did with the Feb period (in terms of what the kids and teams can and can't do once a kid signs)?

Talking to some industry professionals, traffic is definitely up significantly versus last year at this time.

This should be like a second Christmas for the paid sites!

all the kids we are after that are committed elsewhere, we'll know soon how strong their commitment to the other school is lol...

Yeah I wonder if some "commits" are not "allowed" to sign during the ESP. I wonder if that creates some flips. So 3 levels of offers vs previously 2:
1. 100% Committable
2. Committable but not for ESP => possible flips
3. Not commitable

...and vice versa, kids that are committed:
1. 100% committed
2. Committed but not ready to finalize during ESP => possible flips

I'd love to see some kids get put on "pause", then turn around and say F U, i'll go somewhere else.

Yup. Should be a lot of fun. And we're dealing with 17 year olds so...

...Twitter should be what they do they say, "lit"? I think Lenzy's meltdown will pale compared to what we might see in the next couple weeks. The "butthurt is strong".

I saw a coach (or national reporter?) from somewhere say on Twitter something like "don't be fooled... if your school didn't send you paperwork to sign in the ESP you do NOT have a spot and do NOT have a real offer."

Your read on everything is 100% correct. Kids that don't sign the coaches know they need to treat as not being committed. Schools that don't send paperwork to kids know they need to be looking around. In the Harbaugh era, schools like Stanford would hide behind "admissions" to cut kids loose late if they needed to... can't do that now. SEC schools (and Harbaugh when he first took over at Michigan) would generally fill up with a large base of kids and then as they got information on which big fish they could get start pushing kids out they don't need anymore to make room. Now, you can't really hold those fillers anymore unless you're prepared to pull a bunch of grey shirt shenanigans.

Thanks! This has to help ND. Must be why BK is a fan and Saban hates it. Should be so much fun to follow. This system favors those that recruit honestly. Twitter will be awesome.

.9933 5* WR Amon-Ra St. Brown - probably late signing
.9890 5* OL Nick Petit-Frere - absolutely no clue
.9567 4* LB Solomon Tuliaupupu - probably late signing
.9348 4* DB Julius Irvin - 12/20 (ND, USC, Washington)
.9271 4* DB Kyler Gordon - probably early (ND, Washington)
.9185 4* WR Braden Lenzy - 12/22 (ND, Oregon, UCLA)
.9078 3* WR Lawrence Keys III - probably late signing (Auburn, Houston, ND, LSU, Nebraska, TCU)
.8930 4* DB Noah Boykin - probably early signing (ND, Maryland, USC, Virginia)
.8776 3* OL Luke Jones - probably early signing (ND, Arkansas)

Of the 9 prospects listed above, I think at least 5 sign early and maybe one of the unknowns surprised with an early commit. This week should be massive with a lot of twists and turns. A great end to the week would see Notre Dame at 23-25 commits signed for the 2018 class because then they are focusing on 2019 in January and maybe 1-2 last prospects for 2018 like Amon-Ra or Pupu.

Is there a possibility of any early signing day surprises like the other signing day? Any last second flips possible?

I also wonder how the all star games ratings will be impacted by this. Might not be impacted at all, but guys that used to use that platform to announce may use the drama of the first signing period instead. Interesting to see it play out.

I think we'll see a little impact, but the guys that declare at these events are likely the highly rated guys that really don't have to worry about missing out. I think the ESP helps out the kids who wouldn't be guaranteed a spot late in the game, and the schools that are outside the tier 1 programs who normally experience late flips to bigger programs.

As for the impact to ND, BK has to love having 20 or more kids locked up, and can now focus on new commits instead of worrying, re-visiting, and kissing ass to kids he fears may not be 100%. He has a clear path to those who didn't sign in the ESP and can also take advantage perhaps of some kids that didn't receive their papers for the ESP....

BK be like

I think it's going to be chaotic for a LOT of teams that have in years past really tried to "oversign"... there isn't really true oversigning anymore (which is why the SEC has come back to the pack), but in general the teams you see "close strong" most years are now stuck in a weird game of chicken with their prospects. I would get it has also thrown a wrench in the whole bag man process for a lot of schools.

The SEC has backed up due to being a victim of their own success Lax. Putting a tremendous amount more players in the NFL the last decade than other conferences tend to leave a bit of a void in talent levels. Throw in the fact that most of the SEC schools can't keep a coach around for three years because God forbid they lose to Saban and I can see why some of the Big 6 SEC schools are down a bit.

I see the early signing period as both positive and negative. I would think that if a player is sitting out there in mid Dec and doesn't have a committable offer, then he probably realizes he is Plan B at his desired school. It is great for those who want to get the whole recruitment thing behind them, have a committable offer to their preferred school, and can go about their business. On the flip side, recruits can be pressured by schools to sign early with them - even if they don't want to necessarily go there. The fear being that they may not have a slot at their preferred school. Also, what happens when a kid signs and then the school lets their coach go, or worse, lets their position coach go or they take a job at another school. Maybe the kid should have picked the school and not the coach but let's be real. Many pick the school due to the relationships they buiild over time with coaches during recruiting.

Lastly, teams are playing in bowls and the playoffs. And yet coaches everywhere are logging mile after mile recruiting instead of preparing for games. Not good overall IMO.

For the record, I like an early signing period. But there are plenty of drawbacks to it that I think need to be looked at and addressed. As far as the Bag Men, it's business as usual. Ole Miss flipping a QB in recent days tells us that the bank is always open.
