Don’t think there’s anything more going on “in the world of sports” in the week before Christmas than there is the first week of February. If anything, there’s less, as you’re clear of the Super Bowl and all attendant hype. Also not sure how it’s more or less work for reporters than doing it all at once in February. Most kids signing today are longtime commits, and the drama kids still have time to drama, if they want.
I do think the early period magnifies the import of coaching changes re:recruiting. Even if all the jobs are settled now, schools are still hiring assistants and there just isn’t as much time to get comfortable with a new staff. But, maybe that rewards stability, which is not so bad, and reinforces notion of committing to the school, not the coach.
Biggest losers may be the HS all-star games. Early signees mean fewer hats on the table, and fewer eyeballs. But, whatever, we don’t win those kids anyway. Or they just move the games a few weeks earlier.
All in all, it seems like a positive development, for most recruits, and for Notre Dame especially.
