Ignoring Harbaugh era super-shadiness for a second and focusing on the current...
Stanford has told a lot of kids not to take OVs "until they're accepted"... as a rule of thumb they push all of their OVs out until after the season if they can. The real reason is because their game day atmosphere is trash and they want to get "last impressions" on kids. Now with a truncated recruiting schedule, their ability to hide their empty stadium is decreased because they only have about 3 weeks between the end of the season and the early signing period.
Stanford also uses "admissions" as either a legitimate excuse for why they can't recruit someone or as a crutch for Plan B kids they want to string along. For an example of the former, Demetris Robertson would've been far less likely to have been strung along by Stanford in this current system because of the timing. And for an example of the latter, look at how they made a "second splash" in '15 with all of their late signing defensive backs... they waited until after the season for "admissions" on some guys and then used that as an excuse for waiting to give them the green light when the truth is they can take a verbal from a player at any time. Most teams get burned waiting to offer someone because the kids take it as a slight, but Stanford can always use the excuse of "oh, we ALWAYS loved you and we just waiting on 'admissions' that's the only reason we waited..." it allows them to keep more lines in the water. Now? If you want to land a kid, you probably need to have a commitable offer in their hand by the end of November to have a real chance.
