Isn't Diaco building a house in South Bend? That can be dealt with but the decision to build it has to mean some intent on being there more than a few months. He had to know he would be getting some calls as the season progressed.

Maybe I'm just grasping......

Not true.

Thank you Captain Obvious.

You must not have seen all the post for poster wishing to just promote someone. I don't believe anyone one the staff is good enough to take that job. It is the most important job other then head coach and you need the right man.

The word I heard is that ND is working on his contract and he is testing the waters to get more $$. The bigger problem is longevity. He wants a multi-year contract and ND does 1 year contracts for all coaches except the Head Coach. That could be the stumbling block.

Sounds fish that Diaco would worry about longevity as a DC. He's wanted as a HC muchless as a DC. Why would he be worried about not having a job every year he'd want to at ND.

Personally I don't think he will take this job if it is offered. Someone mentioned earlier the possibility of him going after the Iowa job down the road. I believe he has an out clause for Iowa and with Ferentz being on the hot seat the last couple years that makes more sense. IMO

He's good enough to warrant a multi-year deal. Job security.

Why not extend one year with an option for another?

Or Diaco can get his $ through incentives like BCS bowl appearance/win, top 5 defense etc

Why would 1-year contracts need to include an out-clause?

No ****. But if he's wanted as a HC he has no need to worry about job security as a DC. Year long contracts shouldn't scare him, imo.

Btw, I hope you're right.

If he takes the job, I'll bet 5 million vbucks (which is all I have) that he stays through the NC game. He's an emotional guy and he loves this team. He won't leave them stranded. Anyone for the bet?

How many coaches do you know that stick around after they've accepted a job before a bowl game has occurred?

Theres a number of reasons that coaches leave once they've accepted the job. I'm thinking primarily that it's a gamble if you stay. Yeah, you can possibly win and add that to your resume, or you could end up losing and looking bad. On the other hand, you can add "12-0 and top defense in 2012" to your resume and that looks pretty nice, not to mention it's guaranteed.

Anyway, been outta town this weekend, pretty sad to see this news. It's certainly not unexpected, and Coach Diaco more than deserves a chance to be a HC...but I was kinda hoping ND would have at least bottled him up for another year or two by paying him big to stay. This could just be a ploy for more cash, which again would be warranted for his performance, but it just makes me cringe thinking of Diaco leaving already.

Not sure. I can only speculate. But raising a young family, having people call for his firing after each of his first two years, being a Co-DCin satead of the only DC, maybe he just wants a little more certainty. With the job he has done this season I THINK he could stay here as long as Kelly is here and maybe longer. But I have no idea the stress and thoughts that goes through someone's mind that has no job security. Again...just trying to guess why it would be important.

If you're talking national championship games, then one. Bo Pelini with LSU. Do you know any that have left during the preparation for a NC game??

ND should make him an exception.

It's been since '88 that we contended.

Clearly he is part of an "exceptional" program.

An integral part.

Hmmm...reminds me of Alvarez...prolly should have kept that guy too...

Since he is DC and co head coach or whatever...seems like he is in uncharted waters wherein no precedent really exists...pay him and give him 3yrs.

I get what you're saying but if he does have a bad year then he is out but if he is locked up, if they wanted to fire him, he would at least have to paid the remainder of his deal..ya know?

This thread reads like he's all but gone already... does anyone really expect him to take the job as of right now... and if so, based on what?

Yeah I don't like this but if its his dream we will suffer through it. I still hope he is holding out for Iowa and this is his chance to earn some serious coin from ND.

This is best case scenario for me. I could watch him make Iowa less of a comedy of errors, and hopefully give the Cyclones some competition at the same time.

No way in hell do I want this to happen though. Cough up the coin UND!

I really think he'll use this as leverage and wait for a better opportunity...

Pay him what he wants! Is it that difficult to figure out? We won our games on defense. This sickens me. If he takes a job they will want him to start immediately for recruiting. I just hope he says at least he will stay for the championship game.

YES !!! pay him more !!!! keep him !!!! Hello JACK !!!!! are you listening !?!?

If we lose him because we "don't normally give assistant coaches more than 1-year contracts", it shows that even if we win it all this program still has a lot of growing up to do.

Reading this thread hurtz my nutz. Diaco isn't leaving Teo and team prior to a NC game, if at all. Interview = experience + exposure + leverage + raise. If he goes dumpster diving at BC, he's not the man I thought he was, especially if he does it before the NC.

He stay, that is all.

I thought it would be at least another 10+ pages before we started seeing this.

I don't think Diaco wants to live in the 5 ft shadow of Doug Flutie. He just went to BC to steal the miracle in Miami.

If you don't pay your assistants properly, then you turn into MSU. Pay the head coach, don't pay the help well. Become mediocre BIG team.
