Depth chart for 2013

If the coaches are sincere that they would like Dog and Cat and to mirror each other, then Okwara needs to stay as an OLB. Whether he redshirts or not this upcoming season (I could see it as a possibility), I think if he moves to Cat and JS is a Dog, then '14 would have a 2-deep of Williams and Okwara (Smith) at Cat....where Dog would have a 2-deep of Smith (Okwara) and Councell. Then possibly throw Randolph in there, '14 recruits, and maybe even Rabassa. I think that could be a solid 2, 3 deep.


Looking ahead on the inside, '14 would have a potential 2-deep of Grace and Moore (Deeb) at Mike. Will looking like Moore and Deeb. Then Randolph possibly. And Joe Schmidt should be a serviceable 3rd stringer at either/or. Then the '14 recruits as well. Since Moore and Deeb (hell, actually even Grace too) are all still unknowns, the depth is a bit more concerning on the inside than the outside, but could be ok.

Golson v. Kiel

Golson v. Kiel

I have a question and I wasn't sure where to put it...Why is it that there are so many people out there ready to call Golson the next big thing at QB and see Kiel transfer?

I understand the team went 12-0, and I also understand how/why Golson will have the inside track as QB1 going into next year. But was he really THAT good?? I honestly don't think so. While he does have a strong arm and can scramble (this is undeniable), I think he had a little too much faith in those traits throughout the season. He mad bad choices throwing the ball or being impatient in the pocket, and the way he palmed the ball when he took off gave me grey hair just watching. I understand these are things that can be improved with experience, but will they?

Then you have Kiel. Pedigree QB that has been compared to Payton Manning. AND he can scramble. The Blue-Gold game last year showed that. He doesn't scramble like Golson, but more like a Colin Kline. So why count this guy out so soon? Because of the depth chart? The only person he should really be worried about is Golson, and like I said before, he's not exactly amazing. Turnover Tommy is backup material all day, Hendrix (I always liked him too) just doesn't have the same level of skill, and Zaire should redshirt.

The reason I thought about all this is one simple fact...look at the pros. Hell, look at college if you want. The teams that win the big games are the teams that have that strong-in-the-pocket QB. The big guy that sits tight under pressure and makes the throws. Tom Brady, Payton Manning, AJ McCarron, Aaron Murray...all big time QBs on big time teams. While I think Golson is a great player, I think Kiel will give him a run for his money. Don't count him out just yet.

4 of the last 8 Champs have had a running / dual threat QB leading them. Newton, Tebow, Leak/Tebow, and Young. That's not even to mention the runners up who won plenty of big games to get there consisting of said Golson and Darren Thomas (I won't count Jordan Jefferson because LSU wasn't led by him, in fact you could even argue he held them back).

Further, given the fact that it is a trend following league, but teams now are embracing and sometimes even moving fully towards those type QBs in the NFL. Griffin, Newton, Kaepernick, Wilson, etc all have had great early success, and three of the 4 led playoff teams.

I think you can argue for Kiel all you want, but doing it that way to me is just silly given the evidence otherwise.

What any of us think is below redundant. All we know is that Coach goes into things with about as blank a slate on just who is going to win a job as any coach we'll ever see. His modus operandi is:
1). Let everyone know that every job's open;
2). Give the established veteran a very strong first shot at it, that is, lots of opportunity and [in the camps] no quick hook --- during the season is another story if it means wins;
3). Encourage intense competition everywhere with no babying egos. If you can't handle it, you don't belong on the field;
4). Assess what happens and make strong executive decisions, regardless of what anyone else, particularly fans, want.

As specifically to QB:
1). Coach knows what he has in Tommy [who is NOT "tommy turnover" any longer and that crap should be dropped]. Coach is delighted that he can relax knowing he has an ice cool relief pitcher if he needs one;
2). Coach knows what he's got in Everett. He's happy with a lot of that, and there are several things that he's not happy about. Some of those things seem correctable by Everett [ex. ball-carrying technique --- Kelly is always making the "arm curl" sign to Everett after he "loaf-of-breads" a scramble], but some may not be. I look for Coach to alter the offense significantly for Everett --- some overtly [rolling pockets; planned roll-outs] and some subtly [something looking conventional but making it more likely that Everett can see the whole field without scrambling every time --- deeper drops might do this, but puts more stress on your tackles and the RB blitz pickups, due to more ground to cover];
3). Coach does NOT know what he has with Gunner. He suspects, naturally, that he has a QB with great characteristics very well matched to his preferred system, but he doesn't know that until the real snaps happen. I will bet vMoney that Coach would like a QB like he hopes Gunner could be, who could "stand-and-deliver" rapidly and accurately 180 degrees wide, and still be a running threat.

Coach will give Gunner a real shot. He will give Everett at least as much of a shot. But Everett's going to have to earn it if Gunner is the QB he looks as if he might be.

My prediction?: Horse race. Everett keeps the job. Kelly tells Gunner that he's right there, and tells Everett that Gunner's ready, too. If Everett's "The Man", that won't bother him. If not ... "next man in."

Secondary prediction: endless bitching occurs from ND fans regardless of Coach's decision, and he's right and the fans are wrong.

He could (Keil) leave I dont really see it though because he came to Notre Dame for more than just football.

No disrespect TP, but we all hear things like this every year across sports in general, even straight from the coaches mouth, only to see the exact oposite happen. Not doubting your sources, nor am I saying you're wrong, but I am surprised you are so definitive at this stage prior to even the spring game.

It's unlikely Kiel would have unseated Golson as the starter. He would have to show a better knowledge of the playbook at this point, and he's got to contend with a year of experience including experience in the MNC.

Kiel has all the physical tools and I'm not saying he couldn't have done it, but at best he probably would have been sharing reps with Golson in the future and would have had at best 1 full year under center by himself.

Murphy921, Kiel is certainly a good QB, but he hasn't shown enough yet in practice or the Blue & Gold game that he's far and away better than Golson. Lets not forget that Golson was a great prospect in high school too, with experience at that championship level. He's no slouch, and despite a slow start (Understandable for an underclassmen) he kept us in a number of games with his mobility and leadership.

:) . I was trying to get you to give more info. I had actually PM'd someone saying I had heard the same thing (transfer maybe coming). I hate that it's happening, but going to be positive! At least try to be.
