PR-Not sure, hopefully not Neal

I think we see improvement everywhere on offense besides the inside of the line and a lot of improvement in the secondary. Our front 7 loses a lot though.

You like the Carlisle/Atkinson/Freshman group over the Wood/Riddick/Atkinson group? I don't know about that. I'm not saying that the backs won't be better. I'm just saying that I won't be expecting it.

- This is what I think it should be not necessarily what I think will happen. Therefore I chose to pick some of the close battles instead of just backslashing them. For example:

Shumate and Collinsworth I believe will be a close battle as will Redfield Farley.

- The RB situation:

a) I don't think Atkinson is an every down back but the ideal situation is that he is and in that case he starts
b) I don't know enough about Carlisle, for some reason I always think of him like Riddick and if that is the case I think one of him or McDaniel should move and challenge Neal for the Z position. Very possible I am way off there.
c) I REALLY hope they are bulking up Mahone to be a power back which is why I dashed him with Atkinson. Speed and Power to relieve the balance Bryant brings.

- I am also of the thought that Stanley could start in place of Martin (but edge goes to Martin), in which case the line would be:

Z Martin Watt Hegarty Lombard Stanley

- I honestly have no idea where to put Rabasa but he will see PT somewhere

- I assumed the 3 big ?s in that Calabrese is not back, Nichols is out and Slaughter is back.

Bryant isn't starting next year. Atkinson will be a playmaker. Bivin should get a look at C, but I doubt anything in the first season. Switching Lombard and N Martin will be interesting. This will be determined by the offsesason. Should be great. Don't be surprised to see Farley switch over after his solid season this year. It will depend on which DB needs backside support from the safeties.

I don't know if Bryant will be starting, but I don't think it's a certainty that GAIII can be an every down back yet. He'll be on the field plenty, but being a clear number one is far from solid. I think we'll see similarities to this year, a bunch of backs will get a shot early on and whoever is performing the best will get the majority of the carries until they die or we find someone better...

Wow, I don't know how I forgot him. He will be irreplaceable.

If we were able to replace Caspar, MacAfee, Holohan, Hunter, Bavaro, Williams, Brown, Smith, O'Leary, Holloway, Fasano, Carlson and Rudolph, I'm sure we'll survive the loss of Eifert.

It's too bad no one is giving McDaniel a shot. I think he is going to be the workhorse runningback/hybrid (Riddick), and I believe BK and Co. will give everyone else more shots to win it, but I think McDaniel will just steal it away.

In the limited time I've seen him play, I really like what he brings to the table.

Against a Miami team that had been thoroughly beaten into the turf for three quarters prior to his drive and subsequent touchdown?

Well it's "a lot more" perhaps in terms of percentage but not total minutes.

QB: Golson, Rees, Kiel, Hendrix, Zaire.

Plain and simple. Golson is our future, Rees is a great "closer" and Kiel.. akward situation for him. I would like to see Hendrix leaves the team, honestly. I just think he is a very good player and he can be the starter in another good university, i feel bad for him sitting in the bench without any chance to play.

RBs: Bryant, Mahone, Atkinson, Mcdaniel.

Very hard to make a prediction here because the competition is absolutely open. First of all, there are different players. The only pure RBs are Bryant and Mahone. Atkinson is an Athlete, Folston & Carlisle can play in the slot too and Mcdaniel can play anywhere.

Atkinson got an excellent straight line speed so i would love to see as a Wideout, i'm not a big fan of him at the RB position. Folston or Carlisle, one of them, will play in the slot full time, i'm 100 percent sure. Mcdaniel can be move to another position but i would love to see some carries for him next season (and not in the garbaje time).

WRs: Daniels, Jones, Smith, Brown, Ferguson.

Well, the starters here are Jones and Daniels, i think we all agree in this one. Then we got the curious case of Justin Ferguson, he plays a lot of snaps in Dublin and then he disappears the rest of the season. Chris Brown is "rare" but with one year of experience, more frame and mature, he will be fine, its all about development in his case. Not expect a lot of Daniel Smith, good in his blocking duties but no more. We will see if some freshman can have any impact.

TEs: Niklas, Koyack, Welsch.

The year of the truth for both, Niklas and Koyack. Niklas played OL in his HS days, OLB in his freshman year and now Tight End. He is a monster and he can run, he needs time but he will be fine, i think. I'm not expect another Fasano, Rudolph or Eifert but i got trust in him. Koyack was the best TE in the country in his HS days but doesnt look like that in his first two years. I think they can develop a good chemistry, Niklas more a blocker and Koyack as a catcher. We will se if Welsh can see the field, he was injured last year but he looks like another Dan Mccarthy or Tyler Stockton, a ghost. I expect good things with Smythe and Heuerman too.

OL: Martin-Watt-Heggarty/Hanratty-Lombard-Stanley.

I think Martin is one of the best LTs in the college football, top 3-5 in his position. His stock is not too high because he's undersized but he is a beast from the blind side, he dominated every game this year. Watt is a lock on the LG and the C position i think is another very open competition with a lot of names involved.

In the right side, i would like to see Lombard as a Guard, i think he is a more natural guard than tackle. In the RT i would like to see Stanley, looks very good in tape. But i think we will see Nick Martin at the RG position and Lombard as a RT. I expect some Montelus when Chris will gone.

DL: Tuitt-Nix-Day

Nix in the middle with Springmann as a backup, anyway i think Springman is better at DE position, i remember Jarron Jones in his HS days as a NT, but in the roster he is listed as a DE. Tuitt and Day as a defensive ends, i think Day is more of a three-technique in a 43 but i hope he does well. Hounshell looked good in his freshman year so i think he will be a good addition this year after his injury. I'm in love with Isaac Rochell, beast in the run defense, love his disruptiveness and he plays with leverage, he will play as a freshman. Jarron Jones is the mistery here and i would like to see Ishaq Williams as a DE. Too big to play at the Cat position, i think he can be a excelent pass-rusher off the edge, something like Corey Lemonier at Auburn with 255 lbs.

LBs: Smith-Calabrese/Fox-Grace/Moore-Shembo

Not big fan of Spond, i think he is just good in coverage but average at best in the other areas. Jaylon needs to be the starter since the first day. I'm curious with Councell too, listed as a starter in Dublin and then he disappeared. In the cat position obviously Shembo is the boss and i think Okwara will see a lot of field (specially if Ishaq plays at DE).

The middle is maybe the worst unit in South Bend without Manti. Honestly, i don't got a lot of trust in Grace or Moore. Grace was a DE/OLB in his HS days, mid-low ranked player and we dont see him in two years, i dont know why but i think in him and i remember Anthony Mcdonald. Moore sounds like another Steve Filer type player, a good special teams player, we hear good things about him but at the end of the day he never plays. In the other hand you got Fox/Calabrese, two average players at best. I'm truly feel that Joe Schmidt can fight for playing time, a Walk-on.. I dont see enough level in the middle.

Safeties: Farley/Shumate

If Slaughter doesnt back and Farley remains as a starter, we can see a big fight for playing time. Shumate, Baratti, Collingsworth, Hardy and others fighting. I think Shumate is the most complete, he can hit hard and he feels confortable playing in the box against the run but as a nickel we saw that he is good in coverage, i like him a lot. I think Baratti and Collingsworth can be along with Shumate the favourites, looks like Hardy, Turner or badger are behind this guys. Also i dont know why but i think Redfield will end as a WR.

CBs: Jackson/Russell

Locks. I would like to see another CB playing some snaps (like when we played with Walls, Gray and Blanton) but looks like Jalen Brown and Josh Anderson are "out". We will see if Lo Wood can contribute after his terrible injury and if Luke specially and Butler can do the same.

I think the previous post covered some groups pretty well so I'll just talk about a few of my question marks/predictions...

Are GA3's hands as bad as the rumor has them? I mean, the guy is just too fast to not have on the field but to be honest his lateral speed/quickness needs to improve. His pad level is way too high. I can see him in situational outside running, jet sweeps, reverses etc. But I just don't see him running off tackle and being truly effective. So with that being said, a healthy Carslile will get the nod early. The guy was way ahead of everyone when he was at USC's training camp pre-injury/xfer. If you remember the articles they said that he was polished enough as a freshman to start at USC.

I'm thinking:
Carlisle
GA3 will be situational with Bryant so 2a 2b
Mahone/McDaniel behind that

I'm also curious about the Devonte Neal situation. Neal was really my biggest gripe of the season. Given that Riddick's shiftiness was so important in the zone read running game Kelly uses, you have to wonder if Neal could see some time in the backfield. Pure speculation of course.

Another spot I'm wondering about is LB. I understand the situational(cat, dog, mike, will) LB position but I think that Diaco&Co need to have some these guys more versatile/interchangeable. I think ND left a lot of talent on the sidelines regarding LBs. Okwara is young but I think the guy is ready. Ishaq has left a lot to be desired in my opinion. When the guy seems to want it, he's worth every one of those stars, but other times he just seems disinterested. Maybe that's me but the guy just doesn't have that hunger factor. Not sure what everyone's problem with Spond is. I think he was the best coverage LB on the roster and seemed to be in decent position most of the time. I've never been a fan of Calabrese personally. I know he was in the mix during the Stanford game but outside of that, the guy was the most out of position player on defense. Finally, I think Jaylon Smith is polished and ready to play player I've seen out of high school for a long time, especially from Indiana. But I don't think he'll see meaningful reps until mid season. As for a starters, I really wouldn't know where to start because I expect to see some position shifts in that area. I think Spond and Shembo are no brainers. I do think Okware will be in a lot as well, and Kendall Moore might surprise a few people this year.

For the secondary, it's really hard to overlook the progression with Russell and Jackson this year. I made a post after the Navy game about how I thought Russell may be a huge liability all year and those are the best words I've ever ate. My favorite play was Lee's go route he had the pick on. He has elite recovery speed and he had a couple of TD saving tackles where he ran someone down from across the field. So Jackson and Russell are clear starters. Behind them I fully expect Jalen Brown to step up and challenge them. They were raving about him last year running down GA3 in open field. Regarding the safeties I think that will be a toss up this year. Farley, Shumate, Collinsworth are my early favorites. Collinsworth is an impressive athlete for sure.

I think ND will show more 4 wide looks this year with Daniels, Brown, Jones and a slot toss up. I look for Brown to emerge as one of the premiere deep threats in the country.

Interested in seeing who comes in if Golson gets banged up early in the year, because we would basically be getting Golson2012 with Kiel.

I'd be content with a repeat of last year. We weren't half shabby record wise.

But for real, It's gotta be Kiel. You have to build for the future. Kiel needs those reps, and I think he'll earn them this off season.

You can negative nancy my opinion all you 'd like. He played against navy too i believe. And seeing that we have tons of access to practice film and so forth, my opinion still stands. He is going to open eyes.

If i'm wrong then i'm wrong. But given who is left, who is coming and experience in tjis system. Dont be suprised if he snatches it right up.

Not necessarily. Marcus Mariota and Johnny Football were redshirt freshman last year and they performed at a level higher than Golson for most of the year.

QB-Golson with Kiel getting the junk minutes

RB-I like Carlisle to start. He sat out last year but already has PT with USC and the year watching and learning will pay dividends. I expect big things from him.
RB-GAIII-IMO, he needs to make some big strides with his running style. If he can get low and not run upright he will play significant minutes.
RB-Cam-The BG game MVP, book it. He will get good PT this year.

Z-Neal was not really given a chance last year despite some PT. I'm interested in what he can do.

TE-Niklas, Koyack, and Welch-I believe that this is a combo that could all be on the field at the same time. That would be spectacular IMO. Really don't know who would be the starter between N and K.

WR-Between Daniels and Brown, this will be a strength for us. Haha, it seems like a stretch but Daniels came on strong last year, even playing really good in the NCG. Brown made a few plays last year and I'm expecting him to continue. Jones will be the "hands" guy.

OL-I can't figure this cr@p out but am confident that a C will be found and hopefully Lombard/Stanley will be playing. Despite losing Cave/Golic, I do think this will be a strength.

DL-Day/Tuitt/Nix? With Jarron in the mix I believe ND will be okay. The loss of KLM will be felt though.

LB-Excited about the opportunity for Grace and Moore. Most likely the returning 5th years will provide some leadership and consistency.

DB-I believe with the young starters last year and with Collingsworth et al returning from injuries, they'll be able to play more aggressively.

Things look up from my perspective.

So I have been thinking about the ILB depth chart. Any chance Grace could start even if both Fox and Carlo both come back? Grace has been great in practice but it is just practice. I think it would be better long term or else we would be looking at 4 new starters in 2014; would be nice to have Grace to start so he can be ready to be one of the leaders in 2015. Then again you have to do what is best for the here and now not necessarily down the road.

All this is really pointless on my part until we know for sure on both Fox and Carlo anyway. Just thought I would give my thought process on this.

I think like you said, and I really believe that Kelly will put who ever performs the best during the spring, so YES Grace if he continues to beast it in practice I'm not sure why he couldn't. Carlo and Fox could come back flat thinking they have the position locked and Grace could just show them up. I'm really thinking Fox and Carlo are being put in place for depth purposes. We have a lot of unproven talent that's been watching from the sidelines, at least Diaco and Kelly know what their going to get out of Carlo and Fox, kind of a safety net with Teo leaving. Just my opinion.

Grace definitely could earn a starting position but I think you're selling Carlo and Fox short. Both of those guys were major contributors on the best defense in the country and helped lead us to a national championship appearance. They can play some ball.
