Man, what booster keeps fitting the bill for LSU. Cause I know that state sure as hell doesn't have the money to keep burning through all this cash for coaches.

I'd like to think that Freeman is just waiting to see what ND actually offers. We are slower getting everything approved than other schools. We do our due diligence.

Bernhard Jr isn't worried about a couple extra million a year. IIRC, he banked 3B or more when he sold his company. And he's not the only LSU booster giving lots of bank. They have like 10-15 high rollers. IIRC, LSU got 50ish million from boosters near the end of Les Miles tenure.

Until LSU says, nah we will pass and ND just overpaid for their new DC lol. Would be very ND of them.

Well some differences here. ND is private and LSU is public. I think the optics for ND overpaying and LSU spending something like 12M over 2 years for the DC position might be a little different. Keep in mind that LSU is going through some shit right now. Huge losses within the athletic department. Job losses and pay cuts. Plus the sexual assault allegations that seem very real.

It would be a real Ed O, hold my beer moment, to go all hog moly on a 4M/year DC while he's ignored sexual assault charges going back 4 years and people are losing their jobs.

Except that we wouldn't be overpaying and will have Mr. Magoo'ed our way into the best coordinator hire of the off-season.

Just b/c it’s a welfare state doesn’t mean they don’t have wealthy boosters who care about football over anything else. You want the LSUs & Bamas to shut up about their dominance? Quit letting them beat you to the punch when it comes to hiring the best candidates who can recruit the best players. Until then, I guess ND fans will have to settle for taking potshots at folks in the South for being poor & uneducated.

Let’s be frank, their fans, their players & the mothers of the players couldn’t give a fiddler’s fuck about the 40 year decision or the fact that all these schools are located in former slave states that are just now getting around to eliminating confederate images from their state gov’t & didn’t fully integrate college football until the 1970s.

Lea was a LB coach with no experience running a defense when Elston was passed over for him.

....because he was the only one that new Elko's system. Now Elston has 4 years in it.

I agree with what you are saying lax but he might be the only coach left. If that's the case I don't think Elston has the ability to hire the coaches needed or run a defense with all new coaches.

This is a really good point.

I’m all for the flashy hire, but would not be crushed if Elston gets the job in the end. He has been around for a long time and has coached in multiple defenses, which is a plus in today’s game. I had a great feeling about Lea before he got the job because he was a teacher with excellent communication skills. He had a great presence in the few interviews I saw him in. Elston seems to be very popular among his position group and has developed some talent. Plus like others have said he’s been around our current system for four years, which we have recruited personnel to fit. This certainly wouldn’t be your typical inside hire. If BK deems him ready for the position after all these years, I’d be willing to give him a chance.

Per my link above, they're in the top 10 for most athletic department debt. That's how they're funding things. If they had scores of wealthy alumni who gave a crap about their school, they wouldn't have an endowment that's worth about a third of Cincinnati's.

A lot of these schools are like poor people putting boats and RVs on credit cards and hoping that it will work out in the end. It's a decades-long game, so we'll see.

SIAP, Ridder coming back for UC, as is their stud DE Sanders. The one last ride pitch I'm sure is coming heavy to Freeman from Fickell

But media revenues will double every ten years for ever and ever.

I don't understand how some ND fans think they're going to be the highest bidder in these situations, especially against SEC schools.

Our 14 billion dollar endowment. 4 million for a DC is a rounding error.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure I want the highest paid DC on my payroll to begin with. It guarantees you nothing.

No one wants the highest paid DC. We want whoever Kelly thinks is the best hirable DC in the country. If that happens to be the highest paid candidate so be it.

Also I really want to hear the story of how this got done. Not only is he a great coach he also is a strong recruiter. Probably best recruiter Notre Dame has had as a defensive coordinator in 30 years.

Side note:

I’m sure Luke Fickell played a LARGE role in helping Freeman decide that ND was the right opportunity.

Love that guy.

Hope everyone is happy. Especially those that keep whining that ND doesn't do enough to get quality candidates.

So Freeman told his UC linebackers earlier today that he was leaving, and had accepted the LSU job.

Then BK got in touch with some folks, they worked some stuff out, called Freeman, and hired the dude right out from under LSU.

That stuff doesn’t happen in ND’s favor! BK and JS must be putting the press on the admin and the boosters.

That’s a pretty clutch move. I’m kinda surprised that LSU was such a big player in his recruitment considering the allegations against them. Either way, really big for us.
