ESPN wanted Notre Dame in a close game actually. This outcome will have detrimental ramifications for ad sales revenue as well as the ongoing affiliate negotiations with Verizon, not to mention this game providing a crap lead-in to the Orange Bowl.

A Clemson blowout is millions of dollars worth of bad for ESPN.
