I am pretty sure it is exactly this. He was playing well enough to deserve to be in the bigs and our 2b play is awful. This is the second top 10 prospect the cubs have moved to 2nd. If they didn't want Castro long term you dont move TWO top 10 prospects to a different position so he can stay on the field.

Not saying they don't want Castro long term. It was a reference towards Baez.

Young Chicago Cubs trying for an impossible dream - SweetSpot - ESPN

ESPN Stats & Info reports that no team has started four infielders 25 or younger this early in the season since the 2003 Tigers -- a team that finished 43-119 (Carlos Pena, Ramon Santiago, Eric Munson and Omar Infante, in case you were interested). Before that, the 1999 Expos and Twins also started 25-and-younger infields in April. Neither of those teams contended, although those young Twins became contenders in 2001 and made the playoffs in 2002.

Anyway, in what's shaping up as a National League with an unusual number of bad teams -- especially if the Brewers and Giants are really this awful -- the door is open for the Cubs to be playoff contenders. The projection systems actually had them as borderline wild-card contenders before the season, seeing them with wins in the low 80s.

I wasn't saying you guys are winning the Series this year. I am saying if you guys are legitimately close, Theo CAN make a run at it because you have a ridonkulous amount of talent to deal.

I wasn't saying you WILL or NEED to trade Castro but if Russell and Baez were both tearing it up, you COULD. Who knows what will happen but I'll bet my life that Castro, Russell and Baez don't finish next year on the Cubs.

Something else to watch: If I remember correctly, Schwarber has had some issues which may or may not allow him to be a life long catcher in the pro's. A friend of mine coached him in college and I've followed him pretty closely. Hopefully he transitions well to the OF if C isn't where he lands long term. That being said, oddly enough... the dude is FAST. I saw him beat out an infield hit that I thought for sure he'd have been out by 3 steps. That was the same day he got a good idea he was going to be drafted by the Cubs. His coach was a former Cubs farmhand who made it to Iowa, he met with Theo when IU played in AZ last year about the possibility. After seeing him in person I was hoping the Sox would take him over Rodon but there will be no losers either way with these two.

Schwarber got the quickest call up out of Boise in history, 6 games... took Bryant 18. As of yesterday he was only batting .220 at AA but had a .500 OBP because they won't pitch to him, he had 10 walks in 28 AB's.

You guys are lucky. Good times ahead. Maybe you guys turn into the '03 Marlins and your kids go the distance??? If not, you have the best manager in baseball at handling young guys (if not the best mgr overall) Theo will get the arms... and the arms will want to come to play with them.

And you think that losing one player is going to allow the cubs to leapfrog the cardinals?

I would laugh, but that's just sad...

And this is coming from an American League guy...

Their ace starter and leader, not to mention Heyward went down today too.
Cubs were close enough to Cardinals with Wainwright, losing him every 5th day definitely helps the Cubs chances

Only separated by 2.5 games currently (cubs would be about 6-8 games out in a usual season). Losing a guy who averages 16 wins a season is significant.

It doesn't win the division for the Cubs, but it certainly keeps the Cards from running away with it.

If you don't see that, I don't know what to tell you.

The original poster said "no reason why the cubs can't win the division now."

That's suggesting that there's no possible factor(s) that can/will keep the cubs from topping the cardinals.

But there's plenty of factors that could keep the cubs behind the cardinals. In fact, there's so many situations that can/probably will arise, that's not even worth my time listing them.

The original poster should have stated, "there's one less reason for the cubs to not win the division now."

It's as if he's stating that Wainwright was the only factor in determining the outcome of the nlc.

That's what was absurd with his statement.

if it's a foregone conclusion the Cards will run away, why play the games?

Cubs sweep division leading Mets. "Startin' to come together Pepper, startin' to come together."

Also just picked up tickets for the second game of the Cubs/Cards series at Wrigley in July.

Man, for some reason I just popped into this thread. Due to familial and friendly connections I'm a soft fan of both the Cubs and White Sox. My relative rabidity is fluid. At times I simply "bail" and mutter "Go Twins" when I'm in a mixed crowd

My time warp proclivity took control seeing this.

I (predictably?) jumped to "Fidel or Raul" and "Joan – pre, concurrent or post Bob Zimmerman/Dylan."

I think I'm getting around to getting old.

Rooting for the Cubs is often a sign of senility.
