So the states that you said had tyrannical blue govs, the worst things they've done are propose a fine for breaking the stay at home order and suggest no large gatherings till a vaccine is found. How are these inconsistent with what is being done in other countries around the world?

I'm curious on what your suggested approach would be for these states then, also do you think it was a good idea for those people to protest yesterday?

The lady in Michigan should be recalled. She has no business being in a position of power.

People arent allowed to buy gardening supplies, travel to secondary properties they own, or carseats for babies. That's fucking creepy and she's not an intelligent woman for thinking her goofy fiats would be found acceptable by Michiganders.

Great idea to protest yesterday, though personally I think they should have stormed the governor's mansion and looted the damn thing.

Hospital administrator forcing financial ruin on others to make his life easier - why would anyone be surprised this is what happens when you make MDs king for a day? Collateral damages are very real in this "fight". Even at 240k deaths - that is less than a 10% increase in annual deaths in the US. We gotta get back to work sooner than later - wash your hands and keep your distance and we will be just fine.

I think this is what you were referencing Oahu. See this is the law of unintended consequences - financial strain on the entire medical system b/c everything has been shut down for an underwhelming pandemic. Outside of a few smelly sardine packed urban areas in crappy climates - not much to write home about.

Forgive me, I frequently associate hospital admins with MDs who haven't touched a patient for decades and rotate between staff meetings while technically responsible as the "supervising physician". Those folks love to feel important and make decisions that tend to cause more harm than good, IMO (which I am entitled to have). Frequently people in medicine (not immune to Peter principle despite genius MDs involved) are promoting to admin roles b/c they can do less harm or they just want it while everyone else just wants to see patients. Now let me snowflake this and say - of course not all are bad, there are plenty of good MD admins out there!

Bankrupted by COVID is not just for restaurants and unwashed idiots now is it! Fauci has made this bed where our entire healthcare system could be in financial ruin due to shut down of "non-essential" services and reducing demand across the board due to people afraid to leave their house. Novel concept on an impromptu radio interview this AM - office seeing well patient in AM and sick patient in PM - holy smokes is that allowed! Lady says they are slow - and the dumb interviewer finishes with thanking her knowing they are double busy right now - wtf she called in to win a prize at 9:30AM and just said they are trying to stay busy- not busy AF.

Hospitals and doctor offices have always been a great place to go to get sick or sicker -IMO. My parents are feeling pretty good now - haven't been going to near daily doctor visits b/c suddenly their picayune self afflicted complaints don't seem so important. Not getting sick from waiting rooms and not dealing with never ending modifications to their daily drug cocktails. They go to the doctor for attention, something to do more often than not.

Austin has a mandatory face covering rule now. I have no bandanas and didn't buy a mask before this, so it looks like I gotta ruin a shirt just to go out and get groceries.

Whitner has done more than that. She's been completely nutzo the whole time. First she threatened doctors for the use of hydroxychloroquine simply being a partisan hack, then decreed a bunch of rules that were unclear and confusing. Stores that remained opened like Walmart and Groceries weren't able to sell things deemed non-essential by her. Folks were complaining they couldn't buy things like baby needs and other simple things. She also wouldn't allow businesses that sold gardening supplies (like tomato plants, etc.) to remain open, and people that wanted to grow their own food got riled up. There's a bunch of different stuff you can find with a simple google.

I own a business in Michigan. i concur with this. Shes made our life hell. We would be filing for bankruptcy if it wasn't for some contracts we have in Indiana.

During a time when the world is suffering.... The Iranian Guard were speedboating around our Navy ships in the Persian Gulf... Came within less than 50 ft... Incredible they're being provocative right now. Absolutely zero reason to be dumb like this during a pandemic....

I'd be embarrassed to tout a speedboat with machine gun as a Navy though lol...

The Pandemic and the Strengths of Our Networked Governance
It may not always look pretty, but the American system of federalism creates opportunities to try different things and pick up the slack when there's a shortfall at one level of government.

(Governing is a website devoted to state and city issues)

America's system of federalism provides plenty of opportunity for fighting and recriminations among various levels of government. But as the coronavirus response is showing, this system also has underappreciated strengths that we should take care not to overlook. As we reassess the world post-coronavirus, we should make sure we don't damage those strengths.

Federalism in an American context usually refers to the dual sovereignty of the federal and state governments. But in practice, governance is distributed beyond these two layers to a network of numerous entities including local governments, businesses and nonprofits that each perform critical roles in our society. They all need to play their roles, but, importantly, when there's a shortfall in one, others can often pick up the slack...

From Federalist Paper #69:
The President is to nominate, and, WITH THE ADVICE AND CONSENT OF THE SENATE, to appoint ambassadors and other public ministers, judges of the Supreme Court, and in general all officers of the United States established by law, and whose appointments are not otherwise provided for by the Constitution. The king of Great Britain is emphatically and truly styled the fountain of honor. He not only appoints to all offices, but can create offices. He can confer titles of nobility at pleasure; and has the disposal of an immense number of church preferments. There is evidently a great inferiority in the power of the President, in this particular, to that of the British king; nor is it equal to that of the governor of New York, if we are to interpret the meaning of the constitution of the State by the practice which has obtained under it.

They are doing this in Maryland and it’s the dumbest thing in the world. We have been on the same stay home order for over 2 weeks and been dealing with this for about 5 weeks now. So now it’s a good idea to mandate this lol. This nothing but the politicians flexing their muscles.

The stupid part is that it wasn't mandated from the start. It's perfectly reasonable to wear a mask. Talk about a misinformation campaign our media and officials were fed to believe that even home made masks offered no protection at the beginning.

We need to send a few of their little boats to the bottom of the gulf lol....
We could make it a more even fight by letting a few rednecks from TX strap ARs to their bass boats and set them free in the PG.

Some interesting stats out of NYC:

Out of 6,839 confirmed deaths from COVID, 5,151 had underlying conditions. From age 0-74, there was 712 deaths from people with no underlying conditions for a death rate of 0.6%.

I think it wasn't mandated from the start because of the PPE shortages, hence all the donations and focus on getting PPE. But, the actual medical professionals on IE can speak more to why the messaging has switched.

Yup. They didn't want the general population making on a run on PPE. I was lucky and had a few unopened N95 masks and others hanging on my peg board in the garage from past projects. Purely my opinion, but they should have simply asked everyone to wear bandanna like scarves from the get go, and just appeal to the masses not buy up the masks.

Yeah, but what they are recommending now is not PPE.

You're assuming that the models are static, they're not. As Kelly points out, below, the numbers are adjusting in real time. Have you not noticed that the IMHE model posts the update date(s)? It's moving downward because of our restrictions. Also, I'm pretty sure it's not a one-size-fits-all model. I've watched the curves and projections for each state change over time. States like Wyoming had a way less aggressive curve than States like New York and Washington.

This, but I think you mean "understate" instead of "overstate." It would be an understatement to say that without social distancing we would see many more deaths. It would be an overstatement to say that the lead up to this was pure theatre.

Come on, my man. The reason why the top states for cases and fatalities are blue is due to the number of persons in those states and the population density because of those numbers. People want to live in those states because they have the most opportunity, the most development, and the most care.

Would you rather live in California, even with all its downside, or some shit hole like North Dakota? And regarding poverty, states like Alabama and Mississippi lead the nation in those figures. They ain't blue, bro.

Did you even bother to look at the list? If you would have, then you would have known that 3 out of the top 7 most populated states were not on the list of top 7 most covid cases/fatalities.

BTW....My wife and I were both born and raised in Southern California. She begs me everyday to move to another state. We will not be living here ten years (probably sooner) from now.

It's intertesting that he would use shit hole as a term for North Dakota compared to California when they are literally shitting in the street in California and have tent cities the size of large towns.

Yeah that is 100% the correct move. I wonder how that would play though, might scare some folks if they see some people in bandanna's.

For all the "development" and "opportunity" in California it must be embarrassing to be losing to North Dakota and Wyoming in GDP per capita. Lol

So you're advocating for a large gathering of people right now?

Do you support all marches or protests?

Most of them are hokey and stupid(see: Women's March or March for our lives). Now would be a good time for them since pretty well everyone is at home, wont disrupt anyone going to work.

In Lansing, Michigan? Sure why not. Toronto...definitely. Ottawa, even better.

I understand the Canadian reluctance to have people with guns show up anywhere; the government might think they are being invaded and raise a surrender before they realize it was a protest.

I'm not going to any protest, North Dakota is a very well run state that A.) doesn't have many cases, B.) doesn't receive much traffic from places that have been hit hard, and C.) has only taken very modest measures so far.

I got nothing to complain about, we'll be up and running here in the next couple weeks I imagine. People in Michigan on the other hand, are dealing with a dictator at this point. I don't see a problem with them going out and dealing with things in their own way.
