One thing interesting to me, Sumrall, Golesh and Silverfield all have the same agent as Freeman

I genuinely want to know why Penn State fans think Marcus would leave ND. Like what’s their sales pitch? I have no idea.
Seider was there for 482 years and he left. But, MF is supposed to want to take over a program that’s graduating its best talent and has a horrible class coming in? Yeah that makes a ton of sense. Maybe Eville can weigh and share his wisdom from the 247 rumours he was hearing.

Ohio U has placed their coach Brian Smith on leave. He just finished his 1st year there.

Sorry for being MIA, I’ve been traveling, so if this was already posted my bad.

Here’s what I’ve heard from a few different sources:

Sitake met with PSU, got offered the 11 million dollar deal, and then went back to BYU to see if they’d bump him into the 5 to 6 million per year range. He genuinely loves BYU and wanted to stay. But the AD basically said, “Nah, we’ve got Jay Hill waiting in the wings,” Hill was a strong HC at Weber State before joining BYU, so Sitake accepted the PSU terms.

But once the news leaked, BYU boosters and donors panicked. They pulled together the money Sitake had originally asked for and went straight to the BYU Board of Directors, basically the Prophet and First Presidency, with the offer.

A few thoughts:
  1. New BYU AD Santiago
I know him from when he was the associate AD over baseball while I played. It wouldn’t shock me if he wants to move on from a Tom Holmoe hire like Sitake and bring in “his own guy" so he can have the glory. That fits his personality.
  2. Going over his head
Sending a request to BYU’s Board is kind of like going straight to the Pope or USCCB. Who knows how long it takes them to actually care about football. You’d think this would be a low priority issue for them, unless they care more than I assume.
  3. Boosters pushing hard
Boosters really want him to stay and are making this a priority. If I had to bet, I think Sitake ends up staying, and the whole thing is pretty hilarious from PSU’s perspective. Sitake isn’t a special coach, and Franklin is clearly better.
  4. Why Sitake stays is beyond me
If I’m him, why would I stay after my boss basically said he was fine with me walking? He tried to do BYU a favor, got stonewalled, and still came back. He must be a better man than I am.
  5. If I’m Santiago, I’m furious
He’s the AD, making these decisions is literally his job, and now boosters have undermined him by going straight to the top. I imagine he’s not taking that well and will try to influence the final decision.
Whatever happens, this whole thing has caused some wild waves in Utah, and it’s been fun to watch. If I had to put odds on it, I’d say Sitake stays at BYU, probably around 80/20, and I think it gets resolved before the Big XII title game.

But, hopefully it distracts them the entire week anyways.

Thanks for the additional context and details.

Good stuff (if true, which I assume it is).
But lemme get this straight: Penn State offers him a nine-figure deal, he goes back to BYU and asks for HALF that much money, and they tell him to hit the bricks? A coach with back-to-back 11 win seasons? Fuck those clowns.

Sitake should take the PSU offer. Reading this, it's easy to see that if he stays, it's not going to last long. Too many personalities clashing in a power struggle.

No which is why McShay’s tweet is dumb. Lane Kiffin and James Franklin being Sexton guys grab the headlines but Freeman’s agent Clint Dowdle has chipped away at Sexton’s empire this off-season. Dowdle reps Lanning, Freeman, Sumrall, Golesh, Silverfield, Norvell, Elko, Drinkwitz, Dillingham and more
He represents a lot of big name guys for sure. That still takes away from people a school like Penn State should target

Everyone in the SEC or anyone who has any working relationship with Saban

Not accurate. Like half the SEC is now repped by Clint Dowdle. If you’re a coach who’s risen up in the last 3 years, Sexton is not your agent and most of the SEC has turned over in that period.

If the BYU boosters are giving Sitake everything salary and NIL wise he could want I feel like he’ll stay. Sounds like he basically big timed the new AD.

I got this note this morning from the same sources:

They are going to spin this as Sitake asking for boosts to NIL, facility upgrades, etc., and that Santiago is unable to promise those things because those decisions are made by the board (again, the Prophet and Apostles have to agree to those). So he said it’s probably not going to happen.

Then he, the VP of Athletics (Vorkink), and the President of BYU (Reese) started meeting with Sitake to have those conversations instead of Santiago, because it was above Santiago’s pay grade to make promises on those requests.

They even had one of the Apostles meet with Sitake at his house to discuss the requests so that he could pitch them directly to the First Presidency.

Vorkink and Reese also arranged a meeting with Sitake and Patti Edwards (LaVell Edwards’ widow) to talk about how important BYU football is, etc.

Now, those events did happen. But my guys continue to say Santiago was ready to move on to Jay Hill. There are also some who say they will claim Jay Hill was going to get paid between $3–4 million to be PSU’s DC and wouldn’t have taken the HC job. They can’t say whether that’s true or not.

With all of this being said, it sounds like Sitake has agreed to stay at BYU, and they are working out the agreements for church funds to be spent on stadium upgrades with classrooms and other additions to allow those expenditures. They are also working on building a top-20 NIL fund through boosters. Everything should be finalized soon.

I'm sorry... but are these nicknames or actual positions at that school?

LDS positions, the people that run the church. Those are their titles.

The President of the church is named The Prophet, etc

What Huntr said. The Prophet and Apostles are the worldwide leaders of our church. We believe they have been given the same keys and authority as the Apostles and Prophets of old.

They are the board of trustees for BYU. Not a position at the school, specifically.

What an effing shit show and I love every second of it!! My PSU family members and friends are in complete meltdown and disbelief over this. Many of them saying “this can’t be real”, haha. They all thought Kraft was going to swoop in and get his pick of any coach in the country, literally any top coach in the country. This is glorious on so many levels!!
