Good for Ole Miss. Force his hand (and make Lane look like the asshole if he leaves on the brink of a playoff berth). Better than waiting around while he interviews all over the SEC.

The schools pay the price in the end. Say they make round 2 and then he bolts. Players are entering the portal and going with him. Meanwhile, all the other schools that fired their coach have their new coach, have the transfer portal advantage, etc.

I have to assume they would make him sign a new contract with an obscene buyout this year to make it impractical

Presumably there's an extension, with a steep buyout, attached to this ultimatum, for exactly that reason.

There is an extension on the table, which he hasn't signed. That is the whole point of the ultimatum. He could delay until the season is done. They are having nothing of that and I am here for it.

To me they're guaranteeing he will leave. It was always an uphill battle for them and it felt like their best chance to keep him was to make the playoffs and get at least to the second round of the playoffs where a lot of programs weren't going to want to wait that long on a hire. Sort of feels weird to see a middle class program push out probably their best coach in decades (maybe ever?) while they're in the midst of a playoff run. It's possible they know he's gone already, but if not, this is an unforced error in my opinion.

If they believe he's going to leave, they're not pushing him out. They're just accelerating the process so that they, too, can move on faster. While also removing what's already a pretty notable source of tension and distraction from their playoff run. I dunno. I kind of respect it.

If they push him out before the season ends they're playing with fire in terms of their standing with the committee. The committee acknowledged BK leaving in 2021 would have factored in because you're not the same team anymore. Hell, a 13-0 FSU was kept out of the playoffs because they lost their QB. It's 12 teams now so they might not be out all the way but they could go from hosting to having to travel. There's no real good answer here and I feel for OM to an extent, but I don't know, it seems to me they've been winning with Lane having rumors about him all year and having the Secretary of State for Mississippi pick a public fight with Lane isn't going to ease any tensions.

I would also add, they might think he's leaving, but their actions are going to ensure he does. Lane is petty enough to let this be the final factor and just tweet "later Gator" to announce he's going to UF.

Great hire for VT honestly. He's going to be able to fence in a large part of Virginia. I also think he'll do great against the ACC. Immediately the second most legitimate college coach in that conference and Dabo is on the big downswing.

I agree. This is a home run for them and for him. Penn State had better pull a rabbit out of the hat.

Too bad no one told him VT is the middle of nowhere and he should have held out for the sleeping giant of CFB: the Minnesota Golden Gophers. They have a monopoly on a whole state.

But I do agree, this is a great hire for VT. A home run for them. This could end up being the best hire of this cycle depending on what happens with Days of Our Kiffin.
