I'd add Neb and Ole Miss under Florida as it seems like both will also be open based on everyone's guesses.

Gotta think Ole Miss would target Jon Sumrall, who spent a year on staff at Ole Miss.

I think and this has no inside info at all but Cignetti to Florida makes a lot of sense... His ego and that program... I don't think he could resist

Cignetti is going no where, at least not this offseason.

I don't have that kind of time, my man. LOL. Plus, these are my guesses, so they'll be wrong.

This isn't rocket surgery.

We're talking about a program that won one MAC Championship in 1972 and has an all time record of 366–609–28. Programs are hiring Deion Sanders, Eddie George and Mike Vick with zero head coaching experience. Two of those guys are already on their second jobs moving up the ladder.

It's Kent State. Again, who in the flying fuck WANTS the job? Cribbs does, by all accounts. That in and of itself means they should hire him tonight to he can coach on Saturday. It's hard to know how much worse things can get there. An alum wants the job. They may want to hire him and count their blessings.
Saban wanted that job a long time ago and doesn't have anything else going on...

From a UF writer on the 247 board:

“I wanted to share some information I have gathered regarding one of the potential candidates whose name has routinely been floated around UF's opening: Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman. I’ve been working the phones and talking to a handful of sources all day to confirm this info, and feel comfortable sharing it now after speaking with multiple people in and around agency circles, more than I can count on one hand.

I’ve learned that Freeman’s buyout — should he choose to leave Notre Dame — would be considerably expensive. It has been consistently described to me as falling in the eight-figure range; several sources have suggested the figure is relatively close to Billy Napier’s UF buyout, which as you guys know is approximately $21 million.”

I’m shocked Bevacqua got a buyout that large out of Freeman’s agent.

UF fans are trying to spin Freeman effectively immediately saying "thanks, but no thanks" to any Florida interest with the excuse that "the buyout is just too large for us to pay."

Face saving spin, IMO.

Brent Key. His teams play tough. I think his style would work well there.

Hell Penn State should interview him.
Key seems like a very good coach. He is also a Ga. Tech alum, and might realize he'd an easier time turning Ga. Tech into a consistent power in the ACC than he would Nebraska in the Big Ten.

Personally I think Nebraska should be the place to finally pry Matt Campbell out of Iowa State. Or go get Colin Klein. Or hire Jimmie Rogers, Washington State's head coach who came up at South Dakota State and won an FCS title there. Point being, get someone who has won in that part of the world who'll be able to recruit and develop the best players from the Plains states.

In fairness, elsewhere in the same thread a Florida fan asks, "buyout aside is Freeman unhappy at ND?" And the mod essentially says "from what I'm hearing Freeman is happy"

I agree with you here. This would be stupid to leave your school for a much worse job. And right now Nebraska is that.

Now if Florida, Penn State comes calling that makes sense to entertain that option.

To me even Arkansas and Oklahoma state jobs aren’t worth leaving GT for.

Is Fitz even hirable?
NW's own investigation found no evidence Fitzferald (or other coaches) knew anything about hazing. He was fired, and received a presumably hefty settlement, because the president decided it was his responsibility to know everything.

So is he hireable? Yeah, probably, but if you do hire him, you might want to stipulate in his contract that he's responsible for knowing what's going on in his program.

Commons sense would say hey you should
Know what’s going on within your program.

One things most of us have to remember it’s a different world then when we all played sports. This a delicate, soft, bitch ass, cowardly, or what ever world you want to use society.

I don’t think any of those descriptors apply to the NW situation. I vaguely remembered it was about hazing but going back and reading the allegations they go way beyond your run of the mill hazing and I wouldn’t consider anyone that complained about it to be soft. It was weird gay sexual shit that I can’t imagine ever being acceptable.

He’s been a volunteer assistant at a high school since 2023 according to Wikipedia. I would be stunned if a major college offered him their head coaching job.

I'm personally not big on expecting omniscience. I'm also not pro-hazing in really any form beyond perhaps some playful verbal insults.

Is Bobby Petrino hireable? Hugh Freeze? DJ Durkin? They all have jobs in major college football. (Apparently only Art Briles is not hireable, but now he's coaching some club team in Italy, which sounds nicer than, like, Auburn.)

I think Fitzgerald could get hired by a certain sort of program. Nebraska might even be that program. But probably if he returns to college ball it would be somewhere a little lower-profile.

Could just be buying his time. As they say time has the ability to heal all wounds.

He's a lot more hirable than some guys who have been pulled out of the garbage and hired again in the past. We know that much.

Seeing him coach anywhere other than Northwestern would be surreal.

Damn right it isn't rocket surgery. Your insinuation that nobody wants the job is absurd, and you're pointing to far more famous people taking FCS jobs, including one guy with coaching experience. Nobody without name recognition gets an FBS HC job after one year (seven years prior) as an intern with an NFL laughingstock.
I'm sure they're lining up around the door for Kent State. Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State and the rest of the P4 schools in the region now pay their assistants as good or better than what a MAC head coach makes. This former NFL player, who is an alum of the institution, has said out loud at least one time he'd be interested. If he has the enthusiasm and love for his alma mater dear, perhaps....just perhaps....it's a shot that Kent State might be worth taking?

Full disclosure, I don't have my finger hotly on the pulse of MAC hiring practices. I work full time.

Honestly, I never thought that of all the guesses on that list, Kent State would be the one to spark a conversation. LOL. FFS. This board is truly a treasure.

Agree. He just signed an 8 year extension. That doesn’t always mean a lot, but I think he realizes what he has at IU, no pressure, low expectations.

Keep winning and going to the CFP and those no pressure, low expectation fans will become relentless like they are with basketball. IU has an absolute shit ton of billionaire money backing their athletics right now. They are dead serious about fixing the basketball program and are more than pleased with where Cig has the football program. The fans response to losing on the grid iron will soon mimic the bball court if Cig starts going 6-6, 7-5, hell even 8-4....after back to back years in the playoff race.
