Seems like a fair question to ask considering the guy’s claim to fame at this point is winning the Big 12 one time, his offense is a dumpster fire and QB development has been mediocre to terrible when those are supposedly his strengths. I have my doubts about his seat being “extremely cold”.

Penn State just canned a coach during the season who had about as good/arguably better resume.

How about if they lose four down the stretch? Which is within the realm of possibility.

Agreed.

But I still say now. Unless there is some kind of scandal. Maybe in the offseason they go to the portal and buy themselves a QB or something. I don't think they can pull the plug on this just yet unless the have some lock, stock and two smoking barrels lined up to come in to replace him. It just seems premature, but again, we're living in unusual times.

I tend to agree. Sark pulled Texas out of a tailspin they were stuck in. Not to say he has an endless leash but "is Texas back" had become a punchline and Sark has taken them to multiple playoff appearances and recruits extremely well. I don't think he's actually an elite coach, but he's also not a bum.

It's true he did have those two good seasons along with nine and a half mediocre-to-bad seasons, including this one where he just took Kentucky to overtime two weeks after getting Texas booted from the Top 25 with a "1-1" QB and the talented roster you alluded to. He's playing at the hero-bum fringe right now.

Sark is nowhere near a hot seat as HC. I would guess some folks didn’t like his quote today that he was hired to be a good playcaller. No that’s not why you were hired, it was to win games. Like Ryan Day, I would guess he eventually gives it up. Some losses to end this season might cause that pressure to hire an OC, but not cost him his real job.

because the market is basically going to reset after all of these firings be prepared for crazy coach contract with smaller years attached. Going to be a lot of restructuring.

Agreed. He wasn’t a great HC and it’s been a long time since he sat in the big chair. Excellent coordinator and a key piece to our team for 3 years. If that happens I wish him well but I’m in the same boat as you.

I could see them going after Golden, but I'd hope he doesn't take the job. He has history there, aside from being an alumni he had 1 year at PSU as a LB coach, and then another 4 years recruiting the state as HC for Temple.

Probably someone else. Golden spent 5yrs in the NFL (2016-2021) and as such he already qualified for the coaches pension plan. I suspect that there are varying financial levels of pension depending upon # of years vested, but Golden already had enough years to be (minimally) vested.

If you’re making power program head coach money (and buyout) you probably don’t need to worry about your NFL assistant coach pension anyway.

I always had the sense that Golden was done with college head coaching after Miami, and that if that’s what he wanted he’d have gotten some chances while at ND. But I’d imagine the pull of his alma mater and a massive paycheck could alter that.

I would think it all depends on the system built around him. If he can focus on the football part while some super hungry recruiting guru GM builds the roster, I think he could be great. Big roll of the dice though.

If he takes Mickens as DC I swear to God though.
