Prister did a video after yesterday's practice and mentioned that he posted something about the DC position...anyone want to spill the beans?

Finding somebody who schematically fits the 3-3 scheme that he wants to keep in play is what makes this a challenge.

this is a truly interrogative, not argumentative question.

You indicated hiring Mason would be hilarious. Ironic, or wrong?

I have always felt (with scant observation and data) that Mason was a fine defensive coordinator At Stanford and this year at Auburn.

The lasting impression everyone has of Mason is that final drive in regulation against Alabama when he went into a prevent defense and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

TAMU has all this money and ambition, so for me this would be kind of a letdown hire. So would an internal promotion. I want to see them go big. Mason isn't going big for what they'd likely have to pay him.

Promote Tyler Santucci or is he not ready? Or does he go with Elko?

I think they were talking up Elijah Robinson, their DL coach. I have no idea how true it is, but there were rumblings that if he wasn't seriously considered, he would leave and take a DC job elsewhere.

I'm assuming Tressel connection here, but this is kinda "Meh" to me.

Kelly interviewed Heacock at least once for the DC opening.

He can coach multiple schemes and has been around for a long time. I don't know what kind of recruiter he is, but on a young staff this would be the steady hand in the room?

I am seeing this now as well in reading up on it.

It isn't of much consequence to me as an ND fan, though you never know how these dominoes fall.

Heacock is a good fit. He's one of the more successful DCs running a 3-3-5 and was able to effectively use it against the explosive offenses of the Big 12 (before they turned into a defensive conference this year). He has worked with Freeman before, has HC experience, has spent most of his career in the midwest, and at his age he might not be looking to bolt for the first better job, so hopefully he would stay around long enough to fully implement his system and not leave us in a tight spot like Elko did.

One problem, though, is that he is a safeties coach and not a linebackers coach. Maybe he would just be a DC with no double duty and instead a position coach somewhere else would pull double duty as Special Teams Coordinator.

Randy Shannon, retread at FSU now, co-defensive coordinator

Good for him. He doesn't seem to carry a lot of baggage from what I can gather and my hope is he gets another shot at being a head coach if he wants one. After Miami fired him for cleaning up the mess Coker left behind him, he's bounced around quite a bit.

He has now been HC at Miami and DC at UF, FSU and UCF. That's making the rounds.

FWIW. Prister confirmed the name but Loy inferred Heacock wasn’t like top choice, just the one they could confirm at the moment.

Still it points to the big question, Freeman may not think he can or want to call the D if he’s thinking of a experienced names like Heacock

In regards to your last point.....I have always thought of him as a Kirby Smart type that'll stay very active on the defensive side of the ball during the game. With that being the case, I almost prefer promoting Elston to DC and hiring a big time up and coming DL coach to allow us to keep Elston recruiting at a high level.

I have no idea if this would happen (would be like the Elko hiring frankly in that there doesn't appear to be any connection) but I would look long and hard at Zach Arnett. He is the DC at Miss State right now. He is young, but has coordinated defenses at SDSU and now MSU. Here is the rankings FEI wise...

2017 (year before taking over SDSU DC role) - 50th
2018 - 36th
2019 - 28th
2019 - Mississippi State (before taking over) - 61st
2020 - 38th
2021 - 23rd

He also runs the 3-3-5 and has a low salary to exceed. Dude can coach.

If we are throwing names out there, I would offer up Vince Kehres. He is the DC at Toledo and was previously the HC at Mount Union. If that name doesn't ring a bell, its the D3 powerhouse that produced Matt Campbell, Jason Candle, Nick Sirianni, and Alex Grinch among others. He took over as HC from his role as DC when his father, the previous HC, stepped down. Together, they have more seasons as a head coach than they do losses.

He seems to be a pretty good DC considering Toledo went from being one of the worst defenses in the country to one of the best in only a few years. He also has HC experience which could be helpful on this staff. And to top it off, I'm pretty sure he runs a 3-3-5.

If he were to be the choice, I would also look to bring his father in for an off-field role. He is the architect of that dynasty that was built on a culture that guys like Campbell are trying to emulate as a point of differentiation. He could be the guy to "coach the coach" like so many have been saying could be useful with a first time HC.

Really? He's basically responsible for creating the defensive culture in the Big 12 to combat all the spread offenses. At Iowa State for that matter. Seems like a great pick to me.

Maybe someone can convince me more but MF stood in front of America and said #2 quality had to be recruit your ass off. Nothing that I have read shows me Heacon is that and I think we can all agree that the older you get =/= the harder you recruit.

There have been a lot of solid points brought up about why he's a good fit for this staff/scheme but I still don't see the recruiting acumen is all.

The last remaining job opening is Temple and the favorite is Texas RB coach Stan Drayton.

Al Golden is reportedly interested in going back again but there isn't any word about reciprocation from Temple.

He was at Iowa State. MFMF and all his recruiting magic isn't going to bring folks to Ames, Iowa.

I would take a look at Tony White for Syracuse I believe they run a 3-3-5 and were top 20 in sacks and team defensive rankings this year.

Iowa State is seeing some surprising attrition on the defensive side of the ball. It's purely speculation on my part but I'm guessing that it means Heacock is moving on from the program.

OU is the last big domino to fall. Might be a boring December after 48 hours of crazy. Still hoping for Tom Herman at OU,

USC has hired Tashard Choice as RB coach from Georgia Tech. Good non coordinator hire.
