Bob Davie will not return as HC to NM in 2020

My guess is this had something to do with his failing health this year, and possibly the trouble he was in a year or two ago. They've struggled the last few years greatly, but Davie was able to lead them to a 9 win season in 2016 and they won only their 2nd bowl game since 1961. That's pretty damn good by New Mexico standards, the kind of stuff that earns you a statue in Albuquerque.

The Rutgers situation is hard to watch. As a NJ resident, who is no RU fan, I would love to see them beg Schiano to take the job at this point. Heard that many of their top players have submitted their names to the transfer portal today. It’s only gonna get worse.

These are all crap jobs. Even Arkansas and Rutgers.

Is there any smoke out of USC at this point? If they keep Helton there's basically going to be one major opening this year - FSU - with relatively few dominoes to fall in its wake, and a pretty quiet year on the coaching front.

Heard the other day that USC is in no hurry to make a decision on Helton.

Pelini is still coaching at Youngstown.

I assume he doesn't get many looks b/c he's a throwback - a defensive guy living in an offensive world. He's brash too. Remember that leaked recording of him telling his players Nebraska's AD is a total pussy after he was terminated?

Pelini was 67-27 at Nebraska.
Since he was fired, Nebraska is 27-32

Maybe he had a point. Nevertheless, not something a hiring AD would want to deal with, unless he was a proven title winner.

NOTE THE DATE ON THIS ESPN TWEET:

0 BCS Bowl Wins, 0 Conference Championships

ESPN Stats & Info

@ESPNStatsInfo
Nebraska was 8-17 vs AP-ranked teams under Bo Pelini, including 3-9 on road. 0 BCS Bowl wins and 0 Conference championships with him.

he wanted a 10 year contract and unlimited use of a private jet...no italics

How do most HCs get around the country for recruiting and other functions? Guess I just assumed most P5s wouldn't be flying around econo class like the rest of us low lifes.

He also wanted complete control over all football hires and firings apparently.

Did he ask for a pony for his daughter and insist that no green M&M’s be sold anywhere on campus as well? Jeez...

Some crazy ass demands from a person who’s record head coaching wise is not that good since 2006.

My guess is he didn't really really want the job. Remember this spring when he accepted, and then like two weeks later quit, the job as Patriots defensive coordinator? Apparently he's got a daughter in high school in Columbus and doesn't want to uproot her, or be an absent father. Maybe that's what the private plane was about.

https://nesn.com/2019/04/nfl-rumors...o-resigned-as-patriots-defensive-coordinator/

Still though. The guy's not going to get many better chances to be a P5 head coach. He was passed over/let go at OSU. Tennessee practically had a riot when they tried to hire him. He's not currently employed. Rutgers would be willing to hire him because of the history there, but how many other schools will come calling?

When you get into coaching at the D1 or pro level, you know up front you're probably going to lead a nomadic life.

Of course. But I'd imagine it can get old. We've seen coaches stay put for their kids before, especially when they're in high school. A couple years, she's in college and he can go back to the nomadic life - just maybe as a DC somewhere.

I've been following this closely (being from NJ) but I have not seen any demands for private use of a jet. It's interesting to follow because a lot of kids 10-15 years ago would go to Rutgers over out of state schools (including ND). Remember we didn't have a "pipeline" to St. Peter's (Wimbush, Ademilola twins, Simon), Don Bosco (Shumate), St. Joseph's Regional (Cross) until after Schiano left. Imagine how the now Patriots McCourty twins (St. Joseph's Regional) would have looked at ND instead of Rutgers.

Also he reportedly had scouting reports on current players and transfer portal players ready during his interview, so I think he very much wanted the job.

https://www.nj.com/sports/2019/11/h...a-year-a-25m-guarantee-and-a-private-jet.html

  • An annual salary of $4 million for each of the next eight seasons through February 2028, with $400,000 retention bonuses every two years after the second year of his contract.
  • A $25.2 million guarantee if the university were to terminate his contract without cause before 2021. That guarantee would go down in later years in increments, to $4.2 million by 2026.
  • Unlimited use of a private jet for all recruiting activities and for all non-recruiting program and university-related travel.
  • Bonuses if season ticket benchmarks were reached.

They use the same approach our aristocracy does. Hitch a ride a big donor's private or corporate jet that" just happens" to be going the same way they are, use a university plane but they get priority over "other sport's coaches", faculty and administration, fly first class, fly coach, when they can't bump the first class passengers (actually that's not a consideration.

A lot of in-state coaches recruit the home state backyard by private helicopters so they can "drop in" at several games in one evening and get air time in the process on the local news about how much THE State U coach loves the local youth while those big schools from so far away only are interested in one of the boys from our dear state.

And if just happen to own a Mercedes dealership in-state with your name on the marquee perhaps you get driven in your 2019 Mercedes CLS so the folks know your successful with their tax dollars going to your school.

I think he did too, BUT he wanted CONTROL more.

The plane was a symbol. Was the RU administration going to commit to the OSU, UM, UA, AU, etc arms race or did they only want to better grade of coach to work within a limited arms race (same level talent, etc,) budget.

And yes during his stint at RU he did keep some of the best talent home. Enough to climb out of the depths of mediocrity but not enough to become one of the BIG dogs.

That's the key. A lot of these schools won't commit until they take enough heat from alum and fans and the facilities have become a joke. when they see the FB revenue getting smaller and smaller, they finally wake up. How "woke" is Rutgers?

PANDFAN was right, I stand corrected - here is a new report stating personal use of a private jet in the negotiations.

https://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/...-rutgers-greg-schiano-reunion-fell-apart.html

Rutgers balked. A lawyer familiar with Rutgers’ side of the negotiations questioned whether the escape-clause language tied to facilities would be legally binding. By the end of last week, people with knowledge of the negotiations said, Schiano withdrew the demand and had backed away from use of the jet for his family, which eventually became a demand Rutgers used to paint Schiano as greedy.

It's a zero sum game, though. Rutgers has thrown a ton of money at their football program and been rewarded with massive debt and budget shortfalls. Will spending even more money really work this time?

I wonder who is gonna land that Cowboys job? If it's a college guy like Lincoln Riley, or hell even BK, it will be interesting to see the dominoes fall.
