Late March 2023, we can assume that Caleb Williams is going to be the guy in the NFL 2024 Draft, in which case whoever has the first overall pick is going to be able to absolutely run riot on trading out of that spot and hauling in far more than what the Bears just got from Carolina. So if Carolina gets the first pick and the Bears have it again, as long as they still like Fields as their guy they can trade out and go big again. It's an exciting prospect for sure, but just daydreaming at the moment. It's a long way off.

Time will tell, but I still maintain that having the first overall in 2024 would yield a far better bounty unless Caleb Williams absolutely tanks in 2023 and or gets injured.

(You can all make a wish tonight at 11:11)

You’re probably right, but Caleb Williams has some growing up to do before getting to the NFL. He has all the talent you could ask for, but I think he needs to clean up his pregame antics (fingernails). I don’t think NFL teams will be too fond of that.

Drake Maye will also be a great option in the draft next year.

It'll be very interesting to see how these two stack up this time next year. Something tells me Maye makes it interesting.

He's 21 years old and a college sophomore. I think the growing up part applies to everyone in that position. If CW has to grow up, Jalen Carter needs to get out of diapers.

When you cut through all the crap and forget you're an ND fan, this is a guy that could potentially be going first overall THIS year if he were eligible. I want ND to beat him, but apart from that, however limited my football brain is I've still got eyes. Come on.

Agree. QB is one position you want more of a leader. When was the last time a team won the super bowl with a quarterback that had questionable character issues?

Maye isn't as explosive, but he's got the bigger frame and NFL scouts are said to really like Williams AND MAYE better than any QB in the 2023 Draft. Williams already has the built in support system (dad is super involved) and probably the better team around him at USC. Maye does everything these Shield scouts like too, though. He plays for UNC and is going to have a new OC this year. I'm more concerned for him about the former. Sam Howell is a dude too but got stuck in a rough spot his last season. I think Maye took over 40 sacks last season.

SC goes on the road to ND and Oregon in 2023. Very curious to see how they perform considering they missed out on the CFB Playoff and ended with a loss to Tulane. Those results will reflect on Williams because he's the QB. The ND win in L.A. essentially won him the Heisman.

Consensus today is CW would be first overall. In 12 months, maybe the tune is different, but he's the guy.

I've been spending time reading and listening to Da Bears management and it feels like another trade-down. Ryan Poles sees 7-8 blue-chip players in the draft as ideal picks. I am still a fan of Da Bears drafting Peter S. from Northwestern but a few of the mock drafts are expecting the first tackle to come off the boards at pick 11 or 12.

And Carolina might trade the first pick...

Why would Carolina trade the first pick lol

Some reporters are stating that they may have a higher ask than Da Bears originally received. It’s also perceived that they stink and they have a lot of holes to fill besides a qb.

While it would be hilarious if the Panthers traded the first and got more in return than the Bears, they can’t do that lol. Nothing would surprise me anymore though. There’s a reason why the same teams draft in the top 10 every year.

The Bears trading back again sounds like a good idea. But, if Poles sucks at drafting, then it’ll just set the Bears back even more.

They think they're gonna get a bigger package than the Bears? It's possible but highly unlikely and it dooms them to a tanking year when everything for months has been that the owner wants to fix the QB solution now.

The early Century Belichick Patriots excelled at trading down and acquiring more picks. The objective is to get as many right as possible.

There just isn't a guy in this draft that makes the first overall more valuable.

This is the qualifier whether they trade back or not. If Poles sucks or is average at identifying talent, then fewer picks means fewer hits. Trading back and acquiring more picks means more hits or more potential hits and thus, still the right move unless you believe there is a can't miss prospect worthy of the #1/#2.

Poles' first draft was a success. Zero first round picks and the team had more games played from rookies than any in the NFL.

Here it is:

2. Kyler Gordon, CB, Washington. 14/14 GP/GS
2. Jaquan Barker, S, Penn State. 15/15
3. Velus Jones, WR, Tennessee. 12/2
5. Braxton Jones, OT, Southern Utah 17/17
5. Dominique Robinson, DE, Miami OH 17/7
6. Zachary Thomas, G, SDSU 0/0 (Put him on practice squad, Rams snagged him)
6. Trestan Ebner, RB, Baylor 1/0
6. Doug Kramer, C, Illinois 0/0 (Went on IR with foot injury)
7. Ja'Tyre Carter, G, Southern 0/3
7. Elijah Hicks, S, Cal 15/2
7. Trenton Gill, P, NC State 17/0

An OT from Southern Utah in the fifth round who started every game is an absolute fucking find.

Carter just visited the Bears earlier this week.

This is going to be a really big decision for them if he's there at 9. They must be digging pretty hard on this. Maybe Poodle at 5 or Raiders at 7 make life easy on them and take Carter off the board.

On paper, they got a lot of things right. These are athletic guys from P5 schools and they took a high character DT from Kennesaw State in the 7th round. Poles isn't trying to outsmart everyone and get cute picking guys from schools no one has ever heard of. Talent that played at big schools who faced other talent.

Darnell Wright went up against some of the top competition in the draft and dominated them. Will Anderson said Wright is the toughest OL he's ever gone up against. They got the RB2 from Texas that starts anywhere else but stayed there and showed tremendous work ethic and leadership. He didn't transfer.

I'm optimistic. Sure, they've let me down before, but the Bears have one thing the other Chicago teams don't: a chairman that isn't named Jerry Reinsdorf.

I noticed a trend too of certain teams sticking with the known commodity that is top-tier P5 programs.

NFL Draft picks by college 2023

I'll link this in a different thread as well so as not to derail Da Bears. But seeing how far ND is down that list and the schools in their vicinity, it seems worth discussing.

The Florida guys had to overcome some coaching turnover. These things have to be kept in mind, especially when you consider these guys didn't bolt out and enter the portal when the coaching change happened.

D’Anthony Jones may be a real steal with a couple of added counter moves. I watched some of his tape and I’m impressed. A healthy Lugg may be another steal at Guard.

Well this is quite the curveball especially since demo at Arlington just started. Daily Herald reporting that the Bears are looking at properties in Naperville as well.

Looks like they're trying to go all in already. But this is low risk high reward being only a 1 yr deal

I'm optimistic this move gets them in the playoff graphic down the stretch. There are still too many holes on this roster but I just want meaningful football in December.

I think they're moving towards having a solid starting unit on both sides of the ball but the main thing comes down to depth. Still a year away from having really high expectations
