What do you think of Martellus Bennett?

Depends what Sunday he plays. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.

I've been a Bears fan since I was a kid in a Lions household. I was relieved hearing Cutler getting benched. The guy is NOT an elite QB. Never has, never will. I was happy for Clausen to get a chance to play again. I watched a D Finally step up and a hungry QB, unfortunately the WRs didnt want to show up today.

Cutler is better than half-way decent. Is he worth what they're paying him? No. But the good news is his contract is very flexible. If they so choose, dealing him will prove to be easier than most expect. The question is, who can the Bears realistically get who's better?

It all depends on what the Bears want. If they want to trade them, it will be a lot easier to manage than most expect. Cutler is only guaranteed 38 million, which is easily payable through the '15 and '16 seasons. I'm pretty sure there are several teams that are willing to trade for 2 years of Cutler, and his manageable contract. The issue is, do the Bears really want to trade him? Who can they realistically get that's better than Cutler? No disrespect to Clausen, but he didn't show me anything that makes me think he's better than Cutler, though it makes the idea of a trade more believable. And Mariotta isn't coming to Chicago, so who's left? David Fales? Either the Bears will keep the faith with Cutler or trade him for a couple early round picks and have Clausen take over for the not-to-distant future. Either way, the idea of having Cutler for 2 years isn't exactly nerve wracking in my book. The Bears have MUCH bigger issues than Cutler's contract.

The issue with the Bears is that they got away from what made them so successful to begin with: Defense and running the ball. The Bears don't need an elite QB. They just need one that won't kill their chances to win. They went to the SuperBowl w/ fucking Rex Grossman for crying out loud. But with that, they also need to completely revamp their defense. All jobs up for grabs. The GM and the entire coaching staff need to be fired. They're awful at their jobs and the Bears are soft because of it. The funny thing, is they switched to this offensive mindset, they have a ton of fire power, but are god awful on that side of the ball as well. It's insane how bad they are. Clean house from the top down. As far as Bennett.....well, they should never have gotten rid of Olsen. I'll leave it at that.

The Olsen trade is definitive proof this team is poorly run. "Let's trade a Pro Bowl caliber TE because he doesn't fit the offensive scheme of a coordinator we know will only be here for one year!"

Not only does this defy logic, it also contradicts the mantra of "build your offense around your players, or you will be sent packing before your system has a chance to take off." The NFL is not a wait and see league, it's win or GTFO.

Ehh i think thats debatable, theres probably 10-15 qb's id rather have than cutler; what hes being paid is asinine. I will admit though hes not the bears only problem, but they were nuts to pay him what they are.

No.

Coaching staff is terrible.
Defense is terrible.
OL is avg at best.
QB is avg at best.

A good GM/Owner helps solve those problems. But having a good one doesn't automatically make the Bears a NFC-N champion and Super Bowl favorite. There's a lot of work to be done with that team.

Because they thought he would end up being mediocre and getting benched. That's what they do for fun.

I think it's a valid question in terms of the big picture point he referenced.

The Bengals signed Andy "Primetime-Slayer" Dalton to a huge contract, which everyone in Cincy initially hated. But then the fine print got reported, and it turns out that it's a great contract because of how it's set up. If he shrinks in the big games, it's actually not a terrible investment, but if he wins some playoff games, he earns the big money.

I don't get it... Obviously they signed him before they knew that he would stink. They wouldn't have done it otherwise.

As lion said if his contract is based more off how he plays its not such a bad deal. But signing him to some big ass contract is ridiculous if its not, that money could be spent alot better on defense or even the offensive line. Its just kinda crazy to spend a ton of money on the qb when the rest of the team is subpar unless its truly an elite guy like Brady, Rodgers, Brees or Manning

But signing him to some big ass contract is ridiculous if its not, that money could be spent alot better on defense or even the offensive line. I actually didn't know. That's why I asked.

I thought perhaps if they signed him prior to last season, thinking that his turnovers were an abaration. I'm not a Bears fan, so I really didn't know when they signed his big contract. It's not necessarily an egregious move in those terms.

Cutler is overpaid but the contract wasn't an awful idea. It's only two years guaranteed and that's in no way incompatible with drafting and developing a quarterback... particularly when last year's draft class was full of projects who require more than the usual amount of seasoning.

As to harming their cap flexibility, I don't think that's a huge issue either. In the NFL's FA market you're just buying old guys and hoping they can produce for a couple of seasons. The cap space only really matters for win-now moves. And if you're in win-now mode then it makes sense to overpay a veteran quarterback who is not elite but probably slots in the top 15 or 20 in the league.

Although Cutler has become the focal point for negativity he's probably not in the Bears' top 5 or even 10 problems. Chicago's defense is breathtakingly awful.

How so? 2 years guaranteed isn't a death sentence. Had he gotten more guaranteed money, then yeah, I'd agree, but you can't honestly believe the Bears are going to find and/or develop a QB as good as Cutler in just 1 offseason do you?

Finally, this nightmare season ends. In my life, I have never seen a Bears team so disgraceful, spineless and downright pathetic as this one. 5-11 is bad enough, but the way in which they've lost a lot of those games has been just baffling. The 51 and 55 point debacles, 41 to Dallas, 31 to an awful NO team. Had it not been for the Jets, Vikings and Bucs inept offenses, this would have arguably been the worst statistical defense in NFL history. I can't wait for Black Monday and they wipe the slate clean. Trestman and his crew of incompetent morons have more than overstayed their welcome.
