Defense doesn’t even have to be good, just has to be not unbelievably bad haha.

Grinch is also known as a play caller not just a developer/recruiter on D.

No they don't. Oklahoma was 105th in plays run/game this year at 67.6. For comparison ND was 38th at 75.01. It's entirely possible to field a non shit defense playing at their pace. Plus, his past DC experience at WSU where they never ran less than 68 plays/game on avg during his tenure.

Doesn't your post sort of support his assertion? They didn't run many plays nor keep the ball for long. That meant their D was on the field a lot and didn't get much time on the bench to rest when OU had the ball.

That's a pretty big loss for OSU. I do not think that defense is trending the right direction under Schiano. I realize they ended up pulling out a good season but I'd be looking long and hard about a replacement there. Grinch is a quality DC.

How long is Schiano going to stick there anyway? Have seen his name up for Temple 2.0, among other jobs.

The problem there is that OU, like most of the point-a-minute, basketball on grass teams, has to put almost all their recruiting effort into getting skill players for their offense. Defensive recruits tend to be an afterthought. A top-notch DC can help with better coaching and schemes, but until they start bringing in more talented athletes on D, there's a limit to how much he can do to improve them on that side of the ball.

Composite 4 Stars on Defense:

ND
2017: 3
2018: 7
2019: 10

Oklahoma
2017: 7
2018: 7
2019: 7

I think Oklahoma is bringing in some talent. Especially in the defensive backfield because Kerry Cooks is taking some guys that ND wants. They just have a bad culture of defense at OU right now, they haven’t had good playcalling and the player development doesn’t seem to be there either. They need a defensive staff that isn’t okay with giving 40 points per game. I think Grinch is a huge hire cause they have talent in terms of recruiting on their defense but they need to develop, scheme, and play better on defense.

Welcome to the USC family, Kliff. We'll never let you go!

Seriously, can a school can block NFL interviews for everyone? Or just for assistants? That's kind of nuts.

I believe their is an agreement between NCAA and NFL that allows schools to deny NFL teams contacting their coaches, more or less to keep a "good relationship" between the entities.

USC is smart to utilize it for their sake, but not sure Kingsbury wouldn't want to have some of those conversations. Prior to his hire at USC there was talk in Dallas that Cowboys were interested in him as OC.

Bizarre for both Mattison and OSU. Why not just promote Grinch? They must really like the Hafley fellow.

Maybe Grinch is upset that Day got the HC job and he didn't. Similarly, Schiano may be too dignified to work under a younger, unproven guy.

USC has some bad optics not letting Kingsbury interview. One wonders if that will affect future prospects. Rumors out there that Kingsbury may resign in order to interview

I've seen rumors that Schiano might take the Temple job. The Grinch situation was always a weird one. Left WSU as a DC to take an position coaching job at OSU. Always seemed like the only way that would happen is if he was told, you are next in-line as DC. I wonder if this just worked out to be terrible timing for OSU, which would make me happy. Grinch takes OU DC. Diaz goes back to Miami and now Schiano wants Temple job. OSU panics and brings in Mattison to mentor 49ers DB coach as CO-DC. I can't see how you'd rather have a Co-DC of these two over Grinch but who knows. Maybe this was the plan all along.

Read on one of the sites that Grinch was told to find work elsewhere by Day. He wasn't welcomed back. I'll try to locate the link.

Oh, that would be just delightful. Especially if this defense continues to shit the bed.

It blows my mind that the Cardinals hired Kingsbury. He was 35-40 at TTU and got fired. I get that he worked with a lot of good QBs, but that was enough to get hired as an NFL head coach?

They out browned the Browns.

That's a feat in itself.

I doubt it will have much of an impact. As we know, kids, especially Cali kids want to play at USC regardless.

It shouldn't. This has been going on for years and not just in the NFL.

Not for recruits but for assistant coaches, most of whom always need to keep an eye on climbing the ladder. This was a pretty clumsy move on their part. Now they've got to go hire another coordinator who just watched them try to block Kingsbury from interviewing elsewhere.

Freddie Kitchens promoted to HC in Cleveland
Vic Fangio to Denver. It was fun while it lasted Chicago.

I mean, good for Vic for finally getting a head coaching opportunity, but man I would not have wanted to choose Denver. Great city, but it's the Elway show there, and he has been missing on building a team for a while.

No info, but I'll guess it's Chip Long for the Troy job. He's from Alabama originally.
