Dolphins fire Adam Gase
Cincinnati does the unthinkable (to them) and fires Marvin Lewis after 16 seasons and no playoff wins.

Miami's buyout from Temple for Diaz is $4 million. Coaches usually sign "memorandums of understanding" which is a formal record of the understanding between the coach and the school as to the key terms and conditions under which the university would employ the coach. The formal contract gets done later. Diaz and/or Temple may have owed Miami some money as buyout for becoming Temple's HC. If so, subtract that from the $4 million.

Diaz’s 18 days at Temple coincided with him continuing to coach Miami’s defense as their coordinator, at least in some capacity, through the Pinstripe Bowl on December 27. He was solely Temple’s head coach for about three days.

Should Richt have informed Miami sooner of his retirement, they could have saved a boatload and made the transition easy with a simple promotion. Diaz may retain many of the current staff, saving Miami some money that would be owed should another HC be hired. Since Richt retired, Miami does not owe him anything for the remainder of his contract.

The two other finalists for the Miami HC job were Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko and Michigan DC Don Brown. Does Temple pursue either of them?

Mario Cristobal's buyout with Oregon is $10 mill, dropping to $6 after the 2020 season, and to $4 mill after 2021.

This is just crazy.

With that money they could buy a whole 10 months of disappointment from Jim Harbaugh!

Temple also extended Matt Rhule's contract in 2015 before he left for Baylor a year later. I imagine they increased the buyout which was $4 million in the previous contract. Another $6 mill?

I wonder what Addazio's and Golden's buyouts were.

Todd Bowles' is a Temple grad. Had one year remaining at $4 mill per year so with that in his pocket he may be inclined to return to his alma mater at half that amount.

That should cover the removal of every Bill Cosby reference associated with the University.

Being a total mercenary is going to make the G5s a bit gun shy. The hope is always to find a great coach who will commit to you if you commit to them. Your best case scanario with Elko is you’re in a slightly better position when you’re back on the market for a HC in a year or two.

"new" and "hot" always seem to be more attractive for P5s. sure some are more conservative, but Ws and stats will drive most. if he keeps improving TAMU, merc or not, he'll get a shot at a major program. and Lea will start getting knocks if he hasn't already.

That’s crazy to me. Leave a big conference to go UH. Either he knows something a WV or he is getting ready to make a mistake.

On the surface it does but if you dig deeper there’s some connections:

He still has a house in Houston from when he was an assistant coach there
The richest man in Houston is a good friend of his
Houston is a much better city than Morgantown
Houston has a ton of high school football talent as well as the rest of the state so recruiting should be much easier and Ed Oliver can be used as an example of how they can coach top NFL talent.
UH wants to be a football school, so they’re willing to pay and basically let him have full control and do whatever he wants
UH will be petitioning to join the big 12

Also there was talk of him being on the hot seat at WV anyways. Might as well go to a new school where you get a reset on the warmth of your seat

There was some talk this go-round of Temple tiring of being a stepping stone. Then they hire Diaz for a toe-tap. They now have the money to make an interesting move. I would think either Brown (with Michigan’s D poised for a step back) or Elko (since they can pay him more today than they could last month) would be worth a second try.
As long as they don’t hire Clark Lea.

Diaz dumped the entire offensive coaching staff and the S&C coach at UM. Cited lack of discipline, so I don't know if that was a shot at Richt or the O staff that was let go.

1) The OC position is much more attractive when you have a whole staff that you can have input in hiring

2) Major Applewhite & Larry Fedora both run attacking spread offenses which is very different from the pro style offense that Mark Richt was running at UM. Maybe they want the new staff to be knowledgeable of that.

3) Their recruiting class was an absolute disaster this cycle. Especially from the offensive side of the ball where they got a commitment from a good WR and pretty much no one else. They need some big time recruiters on their staff because Florida has become an incredibly difficult recruiting territory with great recruiting staffs at FSU, UF, Georgia, Bama, and more staffs coming into Florida to steal recruits from Miami.

Alex Grinch headed to OU.

Potential game changer for Oklahoma. If they can field a serviceable defense watch out.

That's a pretty big loss for OSU. I do not think that defense is trending the right direction under Schiano. I realize they ended up pulling out a good season but I'd be looking long and hard about a replacement there. Grinch is a quality DC.

Best Grinch story is he is the nephew of Gary Pinkel, and landed a job as safeties coach at age 32 mizzou fans hated it, screamed nepotism. Well I’m sure they wish Grinch would have stunk around with old Gary now.

One would think that with the handing of the baton to Day would've been a good time to make the change to Grinch as well. Seems like why they brought him in, in the first place.

The problem there is that OU, like most of the point-a-minute, basketball on grass teams, has to put almost all their recruiting effort into getting skill players for their offense. Defensive recruits tend to be an afterthought. A top-notch DC can help with better coaching and schemes, but until they start bringing in more talented athletes on D, there's a limit to how much he can do to improve them on that side of the ball.

I’d imagine his WSU defense was comprised of three star recruits at best

OU would have to drastically slow their tempo on offense to aid their defense though. Sustain longer drives and keep them fresh etc.

No they don't. Oklahoma was 105th in plays run/game this year at 67.6. For comparison ND was 38th at 75.01. It's entirely possible to field a non shit defense playing at their pace. Plus, his past DC experience at WSU where they never ran less than 68 plays/game on avg during his tenure.
