(Not that I want to or think we will, but....)

Can we play for the Ship even if we lose to USC? I say yes.

Given SC's 4 losses, I say it's not very likely. Other dominoes would have to fall perfectly into place.

I posted something like this in the Oregon/KSU thread. It would be Bama most likely, Georgia would fall (lose to Bama in SEC champ), Oregon lost to Stanford (ND won) and Florida lost to Georgia. They very well could if the media get behind them because I don't think the coaches will even vote them #1 tomorrow.

If ND loses then it will be another all-SEC Championship. The nation better get behind the Irish unless they want a repeat of last year!

Go Irish!!!! #1

I guess it could happen. There is not going to be another SEC championship because everyone besides the winner will have 2 losses.

The voters would never allow it. But it would make sense from a logical standpoint, if certain things happened.

One-loss teams:

Alabama
Georgia
Florida
Florida State
Oregon
K-State

Bama/Georgia would knock one out, with the winner obviously taking one place in the title game. FSU/UF would knock one out.

A win for Florida would get them in, so we'd need to the Noles to win (I think they will). FSU's one loss (NC State) would be worse than USC, with Clemson and Florida as quality wins.

KSU is done and dusted, even if they beat Texas. Getting pummeled by Baylor at this point in the season is not a game you can recover from.

Turd in the punch bowl would be Oregon. If beat the Beavs, then back-door into the Pac-12 CG [UCLA beats Oregon], then they beat UCLA... they'd have a strong case. Don't trust the voters to look at common results against Stanford.

Basically, if USC beat us in a close game, it would all come down to UF/FSU. If Florida wins, it would be all-SEC title game. If FSU were to win, it would be a ND vs. FSU vote-off. I think we've seen that before...

Lose to USC by 1 point and we will drop to 7-10. They all hate us. Must win.

Brad Edwards just said that if ND were to lose next week, because of the computer polls, they would certainly not be out of it.

I see a lot of responses saying "just beat USC and make it a non-issue," which I obviously agree with. That is clearly the objective. I'm just saying, if somehow we lost, I think our resume among 1 loss teams would still merit consideration.

I think it's a great thread. I just hope it's irrelevant after this Saturday ;).

I agree, but in the reality loosing early is better than late. Alabama lost earlier than Oregon so they will most likely jump them... We need to win to get in the big dance.

This season anything is possible...

Yes, ND will beat USC but to entertain the question...

Could happen, IF ND loses close one to USC
AND...
SEC conf champ game winner should only have one loss,
but the other SEC conf champ game team loser will have 2 losses
K-State can still lose to Texas (if so, 2 losses)
Oregon can still lose to Oregon St or Pac12 championship game (if so, 2 losses)
THEN
Strength of Schedule and common opponent comparisons and computer melt down...

Yes, ND cooouuld get into title game even with a loss v USC... remember it would be a lot of 1 loss teams in the scramble and argument

However, Irish will win next week

BCS rankings are projected
1 ND
2Scama
3Georgia
4Florida
5Kstate

ND wins we are going to Miami
The winner of the SEC champ game is in

So lets assume Bama wins that game
that drops Georgia out of it or vice versa. loser of that game is out

That brings us to number 4 Fla. They play FSU
this game is key to me if ND were to lose (we won't)
All it would take IMO is for the Gators to lose this game (IF)Kstate is indeed 5 in tomorrows BCS rankings

In the fashion that Kstate lost there is now way a Kstate team would jump us. They just lost to one of the worst statistical defense's in the country in Baylor by 28 points.

The Irish will rise up in LA this Saturday. So let's pray we don't have to worry about this

...

I can not fathom how anyone including Snyder could vote KSU #5.

ORE lost by 3 in OT to the #12 ranked team.

KSU was humilated by 28 points by an unranked team that isn't even bowl eligible.

I do not believe that Notre Dame can be in the NC game without going undefeated. And, I do not believe that Oregon should fall that much in the polls.

I DO believe that the odds are VERY high that we will win the USC game, tough and close, and be scheduled to play either Alabama or Florida in the NC.

Perhaps a small chance. But we would need a lot of help. I think ND wins out 12-0. I am sure whomever has the contract to televise the NC game is hoping ND and Alabama win out. To promote that game the 2 most championship winning schools . It might break all the records.

A matchup for the ages. Purely epic. A game that would appeal to younger and older college football fans alike. Highest-rated and most expensive ticket ever in all likelihood.

The only way it'd be possible if there was only 1 other 1-loss team in the country (not including Rutgers, Louisville, Kent State of course).

A miraculous series of events would have to happen like:

Georgia Tech beating Georgia OR Auburn beating Alabama and then whoever lost that game beating the other. (like Georgia Tech beating Georgia but Georgia then beating Alabama OR Auburn beating Alabama but Alabama then beating Georgia)
Florida State beating Florida
Texas beating Kansas State
Oregon State beating Oregon

I think if all that happened and we lost a real close, controversial game to USC then we'd have a chance although then the national championship could be something like Florida State vs. Clemson/South Carolina winner.

A 1-loss Oregon team would get in over us as will the Florida State/Florida winner (assuming Florida St also win the ACC title game). The Alabama vs. Georiga winner also gets in over us assuming that winner finishes the regular season 12-1.
