He's Tenuta with a mustache. Amazing how Kelly followed Weis's biggest hiring mistake by doing the same.

So why was the defense last year just average?

Okwara - Day - Tillery/Cage - Rochell

Smith - Schmidt - Onwualu

Luke - Redfield - Shumate - Farley/Watkins

You can't convince me that there isn't enough talent there to be a top 25 defense at a minimum.

Agree. There were some disappointments (Redfield) but that is still a talented defense.

Now we have Morgan replacing Schmidt, the clear weak link in the defense last season. And Morgan looks like he can play a little, at least, in the first game.

Our defensive backfield depth is young, but I say play them. I said it during the game last night in the game thread. Just put all the young DBs in the game and let them get experience.

Texas plays their young players, and look at what they are doing. So should we, if they are more talented. I think at DB they are.

Also, the scheme needs to be changed. This type of bust or boom defense is going to get hammered against good OCs, which is what happened last night. Once they find a weakness they are going to exploit it.

Why did they go away from a 4 man front? That were very efficient when set up with four down lineman.

The biggest issue on noticed with corner play was the eyes. The corners were looking into the backfield while Burt ran right by them. Another play the corners turned inside while Burt went outside, then had to turn back and run. It really looked like whatever they were taught to do was either ignored, or the coaches put them in a bad position to succeed. Then when they were finally able to turn and run they looked slow because they were already beat deep by a track star.

Kelly said in the post game presser that it was a cover 3 defense............ so they were supposed to have help over the top. The coaches can't be on the field pointing out where the guys need to be. They have to execute.

Is the talent right for that defense? They recruited the safeties, but I don't think they fit those types of defenses (in general).

Tranquil is not a cover guy. Sebastian was ok a few years ago, but he still appears injured. I think we have lots of 'box' safeties but not a lot of depth at true FS types. I think one of the young corners with size gets moved over eventually.

So did Kelly and BVG try to change defensive philosophy in the offseason? i still saw lots of blitzes with the LBs and the occasional CB coming off the edge. It didn't look that different to me.

The lack of a true pass rushing DE is probably whats forcing the blitzes. They cannot rush the passer with the front four, have to blitz, and are getting burned by lack of back-end coverage. Same story! So, I say play the frosh DBs and let them learn.

Why Crawford, or the coaches, thought he could play press coverage against the Texas WR is puzzling to me. After getting beat deep three times, he finally backed up enough to compensate somewhat. And no safety help over the top didn't make matters any better.

Maybe you should have left the game thread and watched the game? ND started 2 sophomore CBs last night................Devin Studstill got EXTENSIVE minutes last night, and I also saw Julian Love's name get called on Defense.

If Watkins and Redfield are playing than the talent level isnt as big an issue. Have to remember that they are both very highly rated recruits that aren't on the field. We probably win if they both play and aren't running out a bunch of underclassmen. Still, the defense as a whole isn't where it needs to be talent wise to win championships.

Yeah. This is what happens when you think every 3 star is a steal, and every 4-star with a .903 rating is the same as bamas 4-star with a .97 rating.

We got bullied at the LOS by an offensive line of high schoolers, and our entire defensive back field is simply slow. Our talent isn't that great and I'm not surprised.

Kelly has always preached continuity on the staff, but it's plain as day Kelly simply no longer has trust in BVG. He's just exasperated on the sidelines. I simply do not see a way for this to end happily for these two "friends."

Also, part of playing defense in college football is attitude and desire. Our defense doesn't get there through BVG. Who out there would be a candidate to replace BVG that Kelly would feel comfortable working with? Guys like Harbaugh and Meyer are absolute control freaks as well, but they sure as hell hire the best and cut bait when the fit isn't right.

I don't often agree with you but I 100% do here. I think we have some decent talent on D but decent talent doesn't get you in the playoffs. Studs get you in the playoffs and outside of maybe Rochelle, we don't have any.

There are lots of coaches that could have our defense back on top in a year.

communication. Lets start with BVG and how he talks. Literally he can barely talk to kids. I think there is a massive communication problem .

Recruiting. We cannot recruit front 7 talent. It will get much worse before it gets better. Who in their right mind would go send there son to ND and watch there talent die and go to waste under this joke of a defense?

Attitude. Tillery and J. Jones are powder puffs. Zero mean streak. Cage is the only guy inside that should be in a two man rotation in a top program.

Tackling. This could go under attitude, but I feel it falls under training and conditioning. Take 70% of the playbook and burn it. When you throw in the towel on kids and start playing freshman in game one due to the same shit it s time for drastic changes in how we train , practice and coach.

Leadership. I know we were against a hurry up offense, but who is leading this D? Nobody talks to each other , nobody gets everybody going. This is a huge problem. No emotion, too much to think about and a total lack of respect for the coaches.

Our kids are starving for leadership and if we ever get it a lot of coaches "can fix this defense"

My point in bringing up BKs ticking clock yesterday was that he has to know he doesn't have much longer,... He's not going to coach here 15 years... I'll be stunned if BVG is employeed at ND this time next year... Another game like that and he may be fired mid season

247 ranked our 2016 aggregate talent as 4th best in the country using their actual rankings. Not everyone can be Bama.

Chuck Martin may be out at Miami of Ohio at the end of the season. His bread and butter is defense despite the short OC gig at ND.

That's just not even possible.

Exactly. And we don't need to be Bama on D. Somewhere in the top 40 would suffice.

I bet Temple's or BC's Defensive Coordinators from last year would find a way to have a productive defense.

I agree with this post!

- The poor tackling was sickening.
- Leadership non-existant
- Very little "nasty"
- Scoring 47 points and losing to an unranked team...BVG shouldn't be fired...he should resign. He can't recruit, he can't communicate with 18-22 YO's, he can't motivate, he can't get fundementals across, his sceme sucks cat-pud. He should excuse himself. I'm out.

He doesn't trust BVG but we run the ball on 3rd and 12 late?

I wold love to see how Houston recruiting compairs to us and Bama. They looked like world beaters on Saturday flying to the football and making plays. How can a team with significantly worse recruiting look that much closer to Alabama then us?

It's a coaching issue. We don't have the talent to roll out of bed and win 11 games, but we certainly have enough to field a respectable unit, a unit that should be able to slow down Texas.

Pretty much yeah I've been extremely underwhelmed with Brian Kelly's ability to recruit top tier talent. I thought he'd be pulling the truck up by now

I think that was more about not trusting the young receivers yet, though I still have problems with that considering that ESB looks to be the next go-to guy.
