Never - but Freeman has yet to SIGN a class. That is my point. Everyone wants to project the best on Freeman and he has yet to finish a single cycle but the class currently is very good but without Keeley and a QB its not elite like other program's classes. Will it be better than Kelly's class? Who knows. Time will tell. Just don't assume it will until it happens.
This makes no sense. “Everyone” wants to project the best on Freeman? Are you saying there’s been no criticism of his first year (one that has yet to be completed?). Did you not agree when Freeman was hired that he’d be “learning on the job”? If you were 100% against his hiring when it occurred (show receipts please)than I respect your opinion.

You seem so eager to compare BK’s recruiting “prowess” at LSU to what MF is doing at ND w/o recognizing that MF‘s FIRST class is on track to be better than ANY of BK’s classes while at ND.

Where does it say either HC have SIGNED the #1 class??? That would be news to me. When Freeman SIGNS at Top 3 Class then that would be worth discussions. I think the class will be 4 - 7 type class when signed. Similar to ranges Kelly has been in.
Ask yourself ”how many years did BK coach at ND?”

Now ask yourself “how many of BK’s recruiting classes were ranked 4-7?”

2022- 7
2021- 9
2020-18
2019-15
2018-10
2017-10
2016-15
2015-13
2014-11
2013-5
2012-17
2011-9

Kelly had 2 out of 12 classes inside of the top 7. He averaged a class ranking of 11.5.

Kelly was not a top 10 recruiter at ND. Period. However, MF has not signed anything yet.

We will see, but to say if MF recruits in the 4-7 overall range, which would be similar to BK, is selling short the significance of cracking the top 7, which is quite difficult.

Kelly has beaten Miss St, Auburn, Ole Miss and Florida.

That’s the SEC equivalent of what he was doing to ACC teams while here. And considering how those teams have looked in recent weeks, games that don’t have quite the shine as they did the night of.

Got pounded by Tennessee. If they win tonight, hats off to him. If they get run by Bama, this is the same result we’ve seen here for years.

Well where is our 3rd quality QB this year then??? Why are we in this QB mess then?
So you gave BK from 2010-2021 to bring in quality QBs…how’d that work out? I’m sure you were a big Ian Book fan. Didn’t BK flip Ian Book from LSU at the last moment?

But you’re not giving any grace to MF who hasn’t even completed his first season nor his first recruiting class. Are you related to Brian Kelly? I told you I am grateful for what he did at ND. I will also humbly admit I wanted him fired after 2016 but I suspect you were on here telling all of us we were crazy for wanting BK out after completely mishandling the staff & team in year 7?!?

Funny stuff. But yes BK has done some really good moves as an experienced HC and we are suffering from basic QB room assessment issues. It will be interesting how things fair for both programs. I just wish Freeman knew what he was doing and demanded Rees pick up Daniels or Slovis like Kelly did at LSU did w Daniels.

Except LSU was projected to finish 5th in the SEC West, and he’s already matched their last year win total.

Kelly brought in a QB this year at LSU, just like he brought one in last year at ND. So he at least recognizes when the position needs help.

Ian book was a 3*, 500+ ranked recruit and ended up starting a game in the NFL. So some development definitely occurred.

But i get you guys. Kelly was awful and we’re glad he’s gone. He was just another knot in the consecutive David-Willingham-Weis rope of mediocrity that ND has been tugging.

BK is a good coach. I doubt anyone would argue he is awful.

We want a great coach, because we have unrealistic expectations, cling to things that happened 30 years ago, and became tired of the ceiling for the program being a NY6 bloodbath, or shit tier bowl win.

10 win seasons are probably the legitimate ceiling, which BK was able to reach, but standing pat with that result seems willfully stubborn.

Will we become Nebraska post Bo Pelini? Maybe.

Is it fruitful though to be a nice little story every year that is snuffed out by other big programs when the stakes are high every single time? No.

I admit both sides of this argument present credible arguments, but this is where I’m at with it.

I don’t know why we’re comparing Freeman’s Notre Dame recruiting classes to Kelly’s LSU recruiting classes. They’re playing from completely different decks, which is largely why Kelly left in the first place. LSU will probably finish in the top 10. So will we. OK.

But if Freeman can hold this class together it will be as good or better than any class BK recruited to Notre Dame and far better than the ones that comprise our junior and senior classes now. He is a better recruiter, that’s pretty clear.

I couldn’t care less how LSU recruits. It has very little bearing on us. We don’t go after many of the same kids, (tho maybe we should have pursued that DE they got from Indianapolis) and FWIW the guys in this class Freeman and BK both wanted - Gray and Ausberry - both chose Notre Dame. That’s telling.

No?

LSU has more recruiting talent on the roster than ND. The same if anything. Far less?

Don’t let facts get in the way though. You haven’t so far.

Don’t be such an ND homer. LSU is ranked number 10 and we are unranked. He started with 38 scholarships Notre Dame started the top five team.

When you take the totality of what Kelly is done it’s pretty remarkable at LSU and we are experiencing major growing pains from Freeman. Just almost factual hopefully Friedman will get better

Okay. Haha. You posted two blatantly false things and I simply refuted them, to which you pivot each time instead of admitting you were mistaken. Read this thread back. When everyone was dancing on BKs grave, I was one of the downer’s not ending each post with Fuck Brian Kelly. I don’t like rewriting history and made up stories though.

I don’t know what this means. Kelly had ND winning. Prior to that he was winning at Cincy. Prior to that at GVSU. He earned the right to his LSU contract. Pretty clear he is a banksble Top Tier HC - unfortunately most ND fans are loathed to admit that.
Dude, lol. You act like you are the only one who knows what BK was at ND. I don’t loathe BK. I was an ardent supporter of his when many others weren’t. Even when his BVG experiment led our program to a massive shit season with our team trending downward. Admin. had free reign to dump his stubborn ass but instead “encouraged” him to make some key changes, which to his credit he did. He had breaks at ND that otherwise would have sent him to the curb. Thank god they didn’t because he turned out to be a serviceable coach AND was able to help him parlay his contract to more money... just not at ND. So, yes, he should thank his lucky stars for Notre Dame. And we should thank him for “Here Comes the Boom”. But you’re right about one thing, I consider his exit a blessing in disguise.

BK has 2 QB's for the 2023 class if I am reading correctly? 1 will eventually flip or transfer as well as having Howard. It will be hard to keep those 3 happy.

I think BK reached his ceiling at ND- he was never going to win a NC there and I don't foresee him winning a NC at LSU. Do any of you really think he can win vs Kirby Smart or Nick Saban?

The flavor is good right now at LSU, go beat Bama today and I might take a sip of the Kool-Aid.

In the long run ND is better off with Freeman, I don't think Kelly will last his full 10 year contract at LSU.
No one wins a championship here including Nick Saban. NDs own worst enemy is the University itself.

Well, who was responsible for assessing the QB's that they were going after for all those years?

And Slovis and Daniels haven't exactly been setting the world on fire. Both have been mediocre at best, and at times, out-sucking Pyne.

Hindsight is 20/20, but would either come here if they knew they'd have to compete for the job with Buchner. I don't know if either would win the job over the talent advantage that Buchner possesses.

Kelly’s going to look really bad in retrospect if they lose for not trying for an end of game FG.

Who cares. He isn't ND and we just had the biggest win at home in a long time. I am focusing on that. Fuck him. Beat an overrated Bama team.
