Anyone know if Marty Gilyard (sp?) has been active on social media on this??? I’d love to see his takes, been thinking of him ever since this went down

Like he'd let you play golf with him. You'd have to carry his clubs.

If his handicap is better than 18 he's too good at golf and not good enough in recruiting. But living in the south now should mean he can play golf year round...

True, but I think (perhaps like Freeman right now), those guys have to consider the money they can make and the advancement of their careers versus the amount of shit they sometimes have to eat from their bosses.

Exactly. It’s a vagabond business and LeFleur’s colleague didn’t share the entire context. There’s lots of things my colleagues have done personally or professionally that I didn’t agree with or endorse. Life goes on. Glad LeFleur took the high road and learned to be a better person from it.

Sounds like we’re lucky he’s gone.

We'll see. Maybe the problem was ND, the QBs, facilities, etc., etc. Or maybe the problem was something else. But large talent differentials cannot explain a large majority of the losses under BK, given the teams we lost to over his tenure (including this year).

Living in GA Bulldog country... All my friends love the hire, they think LSU messed up by not bringing in Aranda. Kelly gets slaughtered in big games... Ya, he beat OU in 2012 and a Clemson with a scrub QB (who we made look like Tom Brady) other than that... Ya... He's in trouble, the SEC is going to eat his ass up.

That’s interesting b/c he played UGA two times w/ inferior talent and both games came down to the last possession. Kirby Smart was even quoted as saying “I don’t know why ND gets so much crap, they are a helluva team”. How does a loaded UGA not slaughter an inferior ND team in Sanford Stadium in prime time? I’m not into moral victories but I wouldn’t use the word “slaughtered” either.

BK played LSU twice in bowl games…lesser bowl games but ND had lesser talent…by a lot. Despite that ND won both games (albeit both were nailbiters) having to count on their backup QB in both games (Zaire & Book). Fournette didn’t sit out that game. Derrius Guice & DJ Chark didn’t sit out the Citrus Bowl. Both LSU squads made it clear they were coming to play and yet they both lost.

I don’t know how BK will do in Baton Rouge. I’ve heard it called the most cutthroat job in CFB coaching. I think he has inherited a horrible culture. I don’t know if the Title IX mess got resolved. But talent will be one thing he can’t complain about.

Fortuna (don’t shoot the messenger) was adamant that ND has horrible facilities (specifically the Gug) when compared to other division 1 programs (P5 & G5). He listed off the ones that he’d personally visited (incl WF, Northwestern, UCF & a bunch of basketball schools) and agreed BK had a legit gripe.

Sampson added that it’s not about the video games & infinity pools but you’d think a leading academic school would incorporate the cutting edge science that leads to fewer concussions and better overall health/safety of all athletes.

Again, win all the games you’re supposed to (we’ve basically done that the last 5 years). Win over half the games with like talent (I’d say we’ve done that the last 5 as well). Never play teams with a large talent gap (that’s what elite programs do through elite recruiting), we never reached that level.

I don't know enough about how our facilities compare to comment, but certainly I think ND that should stop being cheap and match the facilities of other top programs. But I don't think that explains much about the quality of performance on the field.

Weis recruited very well at ND, for example. It is not some impossible task. I don't think players were coming to ND to play for BK, frankly.

Facilities, mental health staffing, private transportation etc are all important in the aggregate because they give you the best chance to recruit well and perform well.

It’s not like a cure all or an equation where you can say new facilities = 2 five stars per year. It just all adds up. And really to close the gap ND needs all the help they can get.

so if he is fired in year 3 without a championship, he’ll have earned $27MM/year.

No chance he finishes that contract regardless how well he does. What a deal for BK.

Business is business and Kelly had to do what he had to do. At the end of the day it is how he did it. I am ready to move on from him.

He was 0-2 vs Alabama during his ND career, let's see how he does vs Alabama yearly. Roll tide!!

Maybe ND can agree with the NCAA and vacate his wins so he is not above Rockne and is no longer the winningest coach at ND

A 2-week notice would have been nice though......

It seems like the contract was in place on Sunday (Nov 28th) so seems like they ran to him after Riley jumped to USC.

Records are made to be broken. Holtz should have gone past it. Maybe Freeman will be the one to top Kelly's record?

I was cautiously optimistic this morning after Assaf's townhall, our assumptions about Freeman getting announced quickly, etc.

Swarbrick's presser destroyed all of that. Maybe he was just refusing to be pinned down on the meaningful stuff, but it looks like the administration was comically unprepared for Kelly's departure despite warning signs, and that they're willing to let the recruiting class fall apart while they run an old-fashioned "head coaching search". Un-f*cking-believable.

I don't blame them, though. Why make a multi-million-dollar decision on the whims of 18 y/o kids who could enter the transfer portal at any point? A sound decision takes time and option analysis. What's one bad class for what could be a better five-year cycle overall?

Good to see you back, seems like you only appear in times of great distress lol

Thank you, kind sir. I've been pretty busy. Like I posted earlier, I'm totally fine with this from all angles.

There's no way I would ever turn down that amount of money. That's generational wealth. Good for him.

I'm fine with burning a class in order to make a sound decision, so JS should take time to get the best candidate we can.
