You make a good point. Certainly harder to recruit elite WR's when you don't have elite QB's and run an offense that isn't lighting up the scoreboard.

C.J. Williams has flat out said he is worried about the QB position at ND and that has impacted his recruitment. It definitely makes Del's job harder, no doubt.

If Merriweather, Walker, and Williams all sign we can't complain about his recruiting this year because that is a great WR class.

I kinda like this type of idea. Or some type of successful HS coach out there. The end result should at least be a guy hungry to recruit, prove he's worthy, and make his mark in major college football . Plus, you get the advantage of having a seasoned, experienced coordinator/HC on staff.

I dont trust division 2. It used to be loaded with solid programs. Now it's just not good. All the good ones left after they kept slashing scholarships.

Find some FCS guys if you must. At least at that level most of the players there have several choices on where to go to school. So you know the coaches have at least SOME background in getting guys to choose them over others AND he is probably still hungry to do it at a higher level.

Agree to Disagree.... they work just as hard as FBS/FCS kids.. It's X's and O's. IMO, you have a much better chance (at the rate ND pays asst. coaches) to get a solid DIV II than you would FCS. Although DIV II has not prospered as much lately, there is still talent at the coaching levels. I mean, what HC in DIV II wouldn't want to move straight to FBS, for the Irish as a ST's coach. They'd be hungry as hell to make a statement.

Listening and reading to Freeman - I hope he goes and gets a DIV-II DC (He probably knows a few) and make them the ST's/? coach. Find the best one you can lure to ND and have the same mentality Freeman is pushing. Guaranteed he could find one equal or even better than what the Irish has had with Polian. Waaaay to many fair-catches for the speed the Irish have and have had in the past 5-6 years not to have a solid return dept.

This really isn't true though. See, people keep saying it is a ND problem that we fair catch so much anymore. The reality is the way teams punt is different, which has led to a decrease in returnable punts. Kyren returned 14 punts for an 11.6YPR average. Number one this year? Jaylin Lane from Middle Tennessee with 16 returns for 16.9 yards. That's really not much different in terms of returns.

Some guys returned 20-26 punts, but there's so much to factor, plus many of them had worse YPR than Kyren.

The narrative that Polian's special teams are bad is not true. It was for a while but they have been above average in both directions (KO's and Punts) in recent years with a positive yardage differential in both. So we are not "losing yardage every time" on punts and KO's.

That being said I think we could be in line for an upgrade here as a lot of the lower end programs (and lower paying) put more of an emphasis on ST play as an equalizer because they know they are playing teams with more talent on offense and defense.

That's cause our average opponent is Purdue. I'd be shocked if we stack up if we look at our games against top 15 teams.

Hire an analyst for special teams... slot Vinny Cerrato 2.0 in as the 10th coach and let him go hunting.

WR coach is also a position that is just begging for a bulldog recruiter.

Cya. Over all special teams have been average and his recruiting has fallen off.

It wasn't all Polian. Against Wiscy we had the big return. I distinctly remember after the game Kelly saying he doesn't like to return to the wide side because the chances of penalties is greater, but Polian convinced him to call a wide side return in that game and BOOM it worked.

I loved Polian. People have flashbacks to Rocket and Tim Brown, but it's different today.

He was like a "libero" on the ND Cocahing staff

As a former head coach, he helped Kelly not forget the small stuff
Kelly trusted him (and Amber Keeling-I wonder if she is sympatico with Freeman)
He stabilized and elevated our recrutiting

This may be unpopular but the baseline in today's special teams approach seems to be:

Do no Harm

Quick, tell me when was the last time Notre dame got burned in a big game in special teams??

And Polian made starters WANT to play special teams, by chase Claypool.

The old saw about Special teams being 1/3 of the the game has been motballed.

And when you put your great players out there on special teams, well, ask Nick Saban about Waddle.

I'll miss Polian and wish him well.

I found myself cringing each time I saw Kyren Williams back to catch punts.

is probably both accurate and succinct

Kelly will need a new QB

His decision leaves a hole on the depth chart at quarterback. Previous starter Myles Brennanturned to the transfer portal after missing the 2021 season with a broken arm. The backup was true freshman Garrett Nussmeier, who completed 50.9% of his passes for 329 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in four appearances to retain his redshirt. The only other scholarship quarterback projected onto the roster in 2022 will be five-star quarterback recruit Walker Howard from Lafayette, Louisiana.

I imagine he didn’t promise Max the job and said he’ll evaluate it or something. There is talk Brennan could return. Honestly neither him or Brennan are any answer. Don’t know about Nussmeier much. They’ve probably noticed how attached Kelly is with Howard already.

Max Johnson is listed at 6'5". Kelly doesn't have time for these tall drinks of water. He'll get his mantlet game manager in the portal.
