Not to be a prick, but Kelly went 54-9 his final 5 years at ND. Oregon went 5-5 and 6-6 his last 2 years. Do you honestly think we could have gotten him at a bargain? I mean, we got him from Notre Dame, not North Dakota State….

ETA: And as mentioned in my prior post, he’s done remarkably better than all the bigger hires that year (which most are at similar contacts / prices).
He's done well for some of the big hires I'll give you that. But you also left out some guys that did really well also. Kalen DeBoer was also hired by Washington in 2022 and obviously has done better than Kelly. And obviously so has Freeman. You're a good poster and I like your takes. So I'm not trying to be combative, you'll feel just like me about BK soon enough...it's right around the corner..haha

Oh, I’m there, but it’s also not the end of the world as well. Look at the recruiting, look at USC, FSU, OU, etc. It could be a hell of a lot worse. We aren’t in shambles like FSU. Kelly will win a ton of games at LSU (he’ll probably average around 9, 10)…we just have to ride the contract out.

I believe this stage is called acceptance.

Much love, brother.

The only "bigger" hire than Kelly was maybe Riley, maybe. The best hires that cycle look to have been Lanning and Freeman.

BK had a good first year at LSU. Beating top ten teams back to back weeks is impressive for sure. Since then I'm not sure what he hangs his hat on, exactly?

I meant schools (LSU, Florida, USC, Oklahoma, and so forth). I forgot about Lanning/Oregon. Good call.

That’s the odd thing. He took over an abysmal situation and he did the best year one. He’s regressed since then. Generally, programs will have an upward trajectory upon hiring a good coach ….

Sounds like he's reverted to his 2016 form. I got a good laugh when he said "he spends a lot of time on the golf course".

Like Fork mentioned, LSU was looking for stability once Ed O shifted his focus from chasing recruits to chasing tail. The mistake they made was handing a 10-year, $100 million contract to a 60-year-old coach with a reputation for complacency aand a work ethic that doesn’t match the demands of the position. That’s not the kind of deal you offer simply to achieve stability.
When I moved to the Florida panhandle, golf suddenly took up much more of my time.

Funny how that works.

Um…

But I agree, “fraud” is harsh, re: Kelly at Notre Dame. He was a good coach for us, just not enough to get over the final hurdle. Weis, Willingham. They were frauds.

Now, if I were an LSU fan and he were being paid $10 million and replacing a coach who won a natty, I might have a different perspective… 😉
Weis Jr. seems to be picking up cred. in the SEC as the OC at Ole Miss.
Weis Sr. was an excellent offensive mind and should have stayed that way
It's ashame we destroyed that relationship with Sr. His son could replace Denbrock one day.

Weis Sr. was an excellent NFL offensive coordinator. Running a high-level college program in full was not the job for him.
His son seems to be a very good college offensive coordinator. I suspect if Marcus Freeman at some point wants him to replace Denbrock and the timing is right for young Charles, no one's going to let things that happened 15+ years ago get in the way.

I wish there was an alternative universe where this shitbag had to pay back his salary for sucking. It would be much more fun watching him suck balls knowing he wasnt making an absurd amount of money to do it.

They gave Weis generational wealth for starting out 4-2 in his first season because he almost beat the Poodle Trojan Dynasty. He rode Brady Quinn to back to back BCS bowls, where they were embarrassed in both in significant fashion. By year five, his team went 0-4 in November.

He went to Kansas and crashed out there too.

"We" didn't destroy anything. Weis absolutely did not get the job done on Saturdays when it counted most. It was time. That program wasn't getting any better under his watch.

I really liked BK at Notre Dame, minus the 2016 season. Especially the last 4-5 seasons. With that being said, the way he left will never sit well with me.

He could’ve rode out the rest of his career at ND and would’ve been loved forever by a large majority of Notre Dame fans. Instead, he took the money and “SEC challenge”. A gamble that is failing miserably by BK.

Does anyone have any inside knowledge on how it all went down with the university and Kelly? It all seemed to happen quickly and burned a bunch of bridges on his way out.

In many aspects, Freeman has been a breath of fresh air.
IIRC, there is an article or two out there on the BK/LSU negotiations. They had been talking for a while during the season. He was at a recruits house with some of his staff when he stepped outside to take a call and accepted the job. This wasn't something that just happened all of a sudden.

Yes that was at Tobias Merriweather’s house

If your a recruit sitting down in a room with Freeman compared to Kelly how do you say no to Freeman!?
Perhaps the recruit enjoys Brian’s grindin’?

Truthfully, Bryan Driskell could be coaching ND and I don’t see how a student-athlete (bold emphasis added) could pick the overwhelming majority of schools over Notre Dame.

Charlie 's lack of HC experience was obvious. His staff was always bickering with each other and he didn't know how to fix that. Can't have a winning culture if the coaches can't get along.

In a vacuum, it'd be difficult.

Freeman comes off as just a genuinely good person, and he's personable and relatable in a way that BK isn't. People are drawn to that. He's a true player's coach.

On the other hand, BK has been in the game for a looooooooong time. I have no doubt that when he is legitimately motivated to go into a kid's house and put on a recruiting clinic, he can do it as well as anyone, and that includes winning the kids over by being relatable and personable.

It would be hard to say no the younger, cooler dude who is well-known as a player's coach and a solid guy.

But NOT in a vacuum? Plenty of kids could look past how cool Freeman is compared to Kelly, as long as Kelly is doing a good job of selling LSU as an SEC team in a unique location with fun campus life, a great gameday atmosphere, and a recent history of major success.
