Btw the mcdaniels had a falling out with Kelly because they thought we underutilized Cam....

Yes. Reminded me of this:

Honestly, props to Clemson for achieving what they have with a blue chip ratio that's 20% behind the Big Three (and not that much better than ours). They've gotten a lot of mileage out of Watson and Lawrence.

And there it is, Whiskey.

Watson and Lawrence were Heisman caliber quarterbacks. You can overcome quite a bit with one.

I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!

That's the Trump card. The two teams with the talent like ours had Watson and Winston.

1. Five star talent at QB, RB, WR and CB.

2. Hire good OC and DC, pay them well.

3. Leave OL and TE equal or better.

4. Ask admissions for some rope. He's earned it.

More than anything, see 1. QB especially.

This. Kelly's guys have been pretty well behaved. They win plenty of games. I'd like to see ND take another step in terms of commitment to football. ND ought to be a championship contender, and right now it seems pretty clear that it's going to take one more big push to get there.

There was some serious momentum early in BKs tenure that was completely erased in short order:

A timeline:

2012- Train is rolling at full steam. BK is anointed the savior of ND football, the media and everyone takes notice. Bowl game distaster turns talking points back to how overrated ND is, but recruits still notice NDs upward trajectory

Following that season, we have:

Manti Teo fiasco
BK to Eagles rumors
Eddie VD saga
Golson out for 2013

ELITE/CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER 2013 class becomes an island of misfit toys, where only a handful stay long enough to see their potential and contribute, starting a downward spiral back to the land of 9-3 type seasons, with a few softer landings sprinkled in, which is right where we started.

Yea for ND to win a Championship everything has to go to plan, no suspensions, no trouble, no big injuries, Bama, Clemson, OSU teams like that can overcome that for the most part. We cannot

That 2013 class could’ve been so much better. BK flirting with Philly cost us Anzalone, and I believe the stupid foreign language requirement (which BK should’ve told the administration to toss) cost us Vanderdoes and Al-Quadin Muhammad. That’s 3 NFL draft picks who would’ve been in their prime in 2015 and 2016. Imagine that 2015 front 7 with Okwara/Rochell/Muhammad/Day/Vanderdoes on the DL and Smith/Anzalone/Onwualu at LB. BK also could’ve had Zeke Elliott, who wanted to come to ND as a RB, but BK wanted him at LB.

Not sure Anzalone was capable of setting up BVG’s defense.

Seriously.

After an undefeated regular season, and 12-1 record, we suspended our starting QB for the following season. Then we suspended our best CB and WR for cheating the season following that one.

Has any other top 25 college football program kicked their starting QB out of school for cheating?

Still to this day, I cannot believe that happened. Only at ND.

Smartest guy in the room Jenkins doesn't agree. The top, philosophical, bleeding heart type Catholics love the suffering, underdog aspect of religion. You're never going to get more from this group. I'm telling you, these are the refuse to give even aspirin at AIDS hospice types of Catholics.

You need to target their accountant, just like Elliot Ness.

Hate to say it but until ND lowers their academic standards getting to the college football playoff is the ceiling for this program. Yeah ND might win a game here or there but you can compete with the talent Clemson and Bama throws out there any giving night. And I’m sorry but people claiming we held Bama to their season low they took their foot off the gas midway through the 3rd quarter. If they really wanted to it woulda been 30+ points

ND will never be Bama. But this is not the ceiling. It’s pretty simple.

1. Spend more money on recruiting staff and resources to evaluate and identify high ceiling recruits. Then effectively communicate with interested, potentially elite recruits to grease the wheels and get them through admissions.

2. Coaches including the head guy recruit better and harder.

Maybe you get a few five stars every year. Maybe eventually you get a generational talent at QB. Then you have a four year window to win a title.

These aren’t my ideas. Literally every media guy covering ND says they can turn it up if they want to. It’s the want to that’s the problem.

This is depressing. How has ND's matchup luck been so damn bad over the years?

Was this your first Bama game to ever watch, Cack? :) We can be up by 70 with 2 minutes to go and Saban's prowling the sidelines yelling, griping at players (and assistants) for even minor imperfections, having a meltdown over trivial stuff, complaining to the press about execution and mistakes, and never letting up on the grind. That's who he is. Yes, a LOT of it is theater designed to get a point across to his players, but him doing it is as sure as the sun rising in the East.

Of course I have. That’s exactly my point. To think that guy would have taken his foot off the gas intentionally when it was still 21-7 and ND had stalled his o the last two possessions of the first half and the first possession of the second half is unbelievable.

Nothing academically cost us Vanderdoes. He was already committed and had signed his LOI before backing out.

And that's really all it is. We're not losing big bowl games as a favorite during Kelly's tenure.

In 2012, 2018, and maybe 2020 we're losing bowl games to the National Champions. In 2015 we lost to the college football team with the most NFL talent on it. At least, I believe OSU had the most NFL players drafted that year.

Iowa State just beat a team that lost to Oregon State and Cal in back to back games this year. That is their BIG bowl win.

These teams are not even playing in the same sandbox as of ND right now. 12 months ago, ND destroyed ISU in their bowl game matchup. I love what Campbell is doing at ISU but let's keep it real.

Perspective folks. Perspective seems reasonable.

Both sides of this argument are saying the same thing.

Saban didn’t stop wanting execution and domination. He wanted his guys to do their jobs perfectly. It wasn’t a show he was genuinely pissed, I’m sure.

However it is undeniable that the play calling was dialed back in the second half. Hell they basically pulled Devonta in the 3rd quarter. All the ND reporters are saying the same thing. Bama wanted to get to the championship at that point. They didn’t need to impress anybody by scoring 56.

Clemson is closer to ND than it is to Bama/OSU/Georgia in terms of blue chip players.

The real key is a transcendent QB. Clemson has happened to string together two in a row and appears to have another one on the horizon. That's the real equalizer.

Was just going to post this. Good read and perspective as someone just said.

Also in regards to bowl matchups. ND definitely gets the short end. Let's face it. If it's the playoff if it's Bama or Clemson or OSU. At 4 we aren't fooling anyone and will probably lose. History isn't on our side where say we dont get the benefit of the doubt and now we are playing some sub tier 2 team and A&M are get murdered again. We'd be in NCs bowl spot vs who knows but we'd win it.
In other years we are just bad enough to miss the cottons and peaches and end up hammering whoever we play.
