Imagine if we went full Bama and hired Harbaugh as an analyst when he’s free....

Agreed. Kelly is 59. If he retires from ND, even without a title, he does so having truly rebuilt one of the greatest CFB programs ever. That's his legacy. Leaving to roll the dice at another dysfunctional blue blood would be a huge risk at his age. I just don't think he has the appetite for it.

100%.

Would still love to see him sneak in a 'ship before he's done, though.

Brian Kelly made it to a conference championship game before Jim Harbaugh :)

Hell, even going back to the prior regimes...NO Michigan team has even been to the conference championship game  Someone mentioned that last night too.

If ND wins a ship, does BK retire right then and there? It would probably be the single biggest accomplishment of any of the last.... how many champions?

Every champ over the past two decades has been a big state flagship/ land grant* in fertile recruiting areas.

Miami and SC are A.) Both big privates and B.) Both cheated extensively so I'm not counting them.

It's fun to read back through this thread. Credit to BK for making the necessary changes on his staff and credit to JS for sticking by BK during all of this. Honestly, in hindsight, it's been an amazing ride with some bumps along the way. To think that if ND wins out this year, BK will have tied Rockne's all time wins at ND. (He would've passed it had they not cancelled WF game). With BK signed into the mid 2020's, he will absolutely pass the great coach in wins. I think we all should relish what we're experiencing as ND football fans.

and turn down millions of dollars? I doubt it

He's almost 60 and has been coaching for nearly 40 years. He's made money, he will have won a championship at the storied program of storied programs that hasn't seen dick since January 1989 and could make plenty of good money being on TV.

You're not "turning down" anything. What more is there left to do? Go for comfort after decades of speed and chill.

I agree with you on this. I mean Kelly has never come off, at least to my uniformed opinion, that he is a guy that either has to coach or he would die. I think he'd be fine spending time with family and possibly being on TV.

I think he only coaches at ND for another 5 years max, championship or not. If he wins an average of 9 games a year over that time, he'd have almost 150 wins at ND. That would be a tough record to break.

I would if I was him. Onto TV.

To walk away after delivering the first ND title since 1988? Doesn't get any better.

He would become an instant legend. Nothing else to do, but try to win back to back. Maybe that is nothing for Saban, but if Kelly isn't ready to retire, why not keep the ball rolling. (huge assumption that ND will win the NC). If they do or not, its been a good ride the past few years.

Didn't he have to vacate wins because of the Frozen Five?

To think he'd have the most wins in the history of the program but no 'ship would be bittersweet. I really hope they can get it done this season somehow.

NCAA said he did, but the University and ESPN do not seem to care. Neither do I. He's coached in and won 101 games at ND as a matter of historical fact, I'll stick with that.

Yes it would suck for him not to win a championship, but the fans will remember for a long time what BK did for this program. If the program continues on a similar path after he is gone, so will history.

Open question to anyone. What would it take for Kelly to be the greatest ND coach? Keeping in mind the hurdles ND has faced in recruiting since the Holtz era. Honestly, I don't think he'll ever be considered greater than Rockne or Leahy, but he has a shot to be above Holtz.

If he fails to win a title, but the next guy does, would it be sacrilegious to put a Renaissance style painting on the ceiling in the Basilica of BK handing the next guy the keys to ND Stadium?

If he won two championships in the playoff era, I think the argument could be made that he is the greatest coach in the history of the program. CFB is just so much different than it was in the Rockne, Leahy, or Holtz eras. The advantages that the major, blue blood programs have still exist but not like they did back then when the differences between places like Alabama and, say a place like Iowa State, were astronomical.

Obviously, no one will ever put any ND coach ahead of Rockne, both because of his success, meaning, and his untimely death that cut short likely continued success.

Win this year.

Think about it: Doing so would most likely include beating Clemson twice, beating at least one of OSU and 'Bama (potentially both), along with say a Florida or something.

A four or five year run of CFP appearances with at least one title and 2-3 trips to the championship game. You can't be "one of the greats" without a title.

I agree. Those games were won on the field and with that said he's going to pass Rockne who is at 105.

Rockne, Holtz, Ara, Leahy and Devine are the top winners. They all have titles (and statues FFS). I want Kelly to win one too.

That ain’t happening. Lou and Ara never had those type results and they’re all-timers. Just takes one championship and they’ll put up a statue.

I honestly don't think it's possible. I think he could win the next five national championships and he still wouldn't be Rockne.

Now, as you said, to be above Holtz and on the Mt. Rushmore with Rockne, Leahy, Parseghian I think he would just need to win 2 titles.

Absolutely poetic.

I know I was hard on BK in the past but he has truly done a tremendous job at ND. Getting a NC would be the best icing on the cake to his tenure. With the amount of defensive talent and offensive, too, I am not sure he would want to retire IMMEDIATELY, but I could see him not signing another extension and just retiring at the end of his contract.

After 2016, I said to myself that he'd better do a serious reboot RTF now or he's done. The staff changes he made turned out to be tremendous. Look at the last four seasons of results.

The ability to self audit within your profession and as a person is the key to success. In this business it is even more critical to your survival. CBK nailed it, which is why I have full confidence that if Clark Lea takes a head coaching job, Kelly will go out and find the next guy.
