Four straight 10 win seasons. Two undefeated regular seasons. Imagine saying that after 2016. What a run.

I was such a staunch Kelly guy Pre-2016, and that year finally broke me. I was perfectly ok with the idea of him leaving and MY MAN....decided to reward my skepticism with 4 awesome years.

I love BK

I will say there have been times when I was ready for him to be gone. I will give him credit he has taken some beatings by the media and ND fans. But to have 3 undefeated seasons is special. And he has proven to people he can win here and has put ND football in a very good place. I just wish the recruiting would have brought better skilled position players.

I think we should change the thread title to "Brian Kelly is a gangsta"

Agree. I wanted him gone. I’m glad he was able to rectify the deficiencies.

Two undefeated regular seasons in three years is pretty freaking great.

4 undefeated seasons in the last 11 years for him personally right? The one at Cincy, then 3 at ND. That's pretty... pretty... pretty good.

On the article on ESPN it mentions Kelly getting his 102nd win. It’s nice that most of the media still acknowledges all of Kelly’s wins. And if not they usually list them and just annotate that the NCAA vacated some. Vacated wins are the most useless and arbitrary punishment ever. If your going to vacate cause a player was ineligible, then the loses he played in should be vacated as well.

Hello, gentlemen. This is just a post to illustrate the specialness of Coach Kelly as I experienced him. A long time ago in IE, peoriairish did me the favor of posting this experience of how Coach communicated with my Mom on the last weeks of her life here on the Good Earth. I think that it's worth the read.

The post is from 12-21-2012 in the Leprechaun Lounge (page 87 of those lists.) It's title is "The Caring Side of Brian Kelly."

I'm sorry but looking at that link and subsequent pictures...man does a decade at ND age a person....

Worse than the US Presidency! It's no wonder almost every successful coach tends to retire afterwards, and for some it's due to health reasons.

Yeah but I think he would be above Lou if he won one title, yet not among the Elite Coaches in Irish History.

Currently I think that Mt. Rushmore of Irish Coaches is only really 3 coaches. Rockne, Leahy, Ara.

If he got 2, then he would complete the Mt. Rushmore of Irish coaches imo. 2 or more titles should have to be the bare minimum to be included.

Agree, only reason we lost ‘93 was widespread voter fraud amongst the AP voters.

IMO, the reason we lost is because we did not break up the Kez McCorvey TD catch on FOURTH DOWN to PRESERVE A 14 point lead. We beat #1 by 2 TDs and we get at LEAST a split. McCorvey's catch cost us the National Title.

Having said that, that IF Kelly were to beat OSU, Alabama AND Clemson 2x in the same season, which would mean that he defeated the #1 team in the nation at least 2x in one season, would instantly make him better than Lou.

After 2016, I said to myself that he'd better do a serious reboot RTF now or he's done. The staff changes he made turned out to be tremendous. Look at the last four seasons of results.

The ability to self audit within your profession and as a person is the key to success. In this business it is even more critical to your survival. CBK nailed it, which is why I have full confidence that if Clark Lea takes a head coaching job, Kelly will go out and find the next guy.

Exactly how I feel now, too. He really did a great job of self-examination and turned the ship around mid-stream in a way I am not sure I have seen.

Yep, the game eventually coming down to one play in the end zone made it look like a very close game, similar to us and Clemson in '15. Couple that with FSU having a better resume (beat 2 top 5 teams and 5 top 25 teams) and the Bowden love and it wasn't enough. Still hurts though.

In my opinion, Coach "turned the ship around" in the sense that he undid the previous regimes incompetencies and installed a great well-thought-out base for all the systemic intricacies which needed to be addressed in a Top-Ten program. ... this he did, efficiently and brilliantly. That was stage one.

Then several years of battling those previous limitations (and having the most bizarre bad fortune with alleged high-potential quarterbacks), he saw through the issues needed to establish the program one step higher. He did not "turn his own ship around" but he brilliantly refined what he had built. This is stage two.

What Coach has seen (apparently) is that the former way that his offenses scored like crazy against people at Grand Valley and Cincinnati would "work" at Notre Dame, but only if we got lucky with high-performing QBs and several game changer type recruits. Although we could get a certain type of game changer, it wasn't happening regularly. Top-ten QBs weren't either.

How to solve a very tough dilemma --- consistency in the Top-Six teams without Top-Six offensive stars? Kelly has said it more than once this year: We have found an identity, a system, which we can recruit to and fully exploit, and win games: BIG MAN FOOTBALL. BIG Lines. BIG Receivers. Power football in the air as well as on the ground with a savvy QB to run it.

This was not Coach's natural offensive tendency --- but the man saw it. He doesn't want us to be Wisconsin --- we will sling it, and the QB will run it. He wants us to be like an old style Derek Henry-like Alabama --- power at you all game but power in the air too, and here and there a bomb (and not by a Top-Six QB doing the throwing.) We can't get the BAMA wide flyers, so he got the BIGS.

Kelly is a gem. Don't know how he can stand up to the innumerable job demands. Fortunately, I have to believe that he never reads fanboards or anything like the crap which is spewed out in such media about him and his efforts.

Of all four coaches in the CFB Playoff this year - I hate to say it but all but BK would pull a JR/SR for a Frosh if they deemed the talent dictated so...

BK has a reputation of being loyal to some that he shouldn't have.

What’s crazy about that is I remember reading Brian Kelly talk about his time at GVSU and what it took to finally get over the hump and win NCs. He said they started playing the best players and stopped worrying about seniority. Weird that this is always a complaint people have about his tenure here.

I'm eight minutes into this podcast and I feel like Driskel is just talking in circles.

He starts by saying "don't tell me about the freshman that have played like Michael Mayer and Tyree and Folston and TJ Jones..." because...? He essentially admits that Kelly plays freshmen when they are the better option. Either they are more talented or injury dictates that they play. He uses the freshmen that have played and done well as reason to play other freshmen. He says that this is all based on a comment made about Tyree, but then he even proceeds to mention that this isn't that he believes Tyree should be playing over Kyren. And then he mentions a freshman that played for Clemson Saturday and admits that it was largely due to injuries. That's where I stopped.

What this really is is him thinking Jordan Johnson should play based off...? His high school camp performances? Everyone always assumes the grass is always greener.
